Yes, Johnny Gaudreau Uses a 55 Flex Warrior Stick

I know it seems shocking, but you’re reading that headline correctly. Johnny Gaudreau recently switched to Warrior sticks and Warrior has confirmed that he uses a 55 flex hockey stick.

Gaudreau is currently listed on Yahoo as being 5’9″ and 157 lbs, so it’s not too shocking that he uses a whippy stick. A 55 flex though, that might catch most off guard.

On the other hand, when you look around the locker room at your local rink and see the sticks your friends and teammates are using, you might see some other surprises. Players that have no business doing so are using sticks at 100 or 110 flex and not thinking twice.

I used to have some beer league buddies that were smaller and using 100 flex sticks. Interestingly enough, they couldn’t really fire a good shot off to save their lives. Switching to a lower flex would have definitely benefited those players.

When I was younger, maybe 15 years ago, I would use a 110 flex stick. It was ridiculous. For years after that, I continued to use a 100 flex. It wasn’t until a few years ago that I dropped to an 85 flex stick for more whip on shots. From there, I even took it a step further and went down to a 75 flex. If you haven’t tried playing with different stick flexes, I strongly recommend you do. Let the stick do the work for you, that’s what they’re designed for.

So next time you see players like Gaudreau get insane flex from the stick when shooting, remember that they are not using incredibly stiff sticks. Gaudreau’s 55 flex is just enough to take care of business, and he is one of the best players in the world.
