TJ Brodie saves goal by batting puck out of mid-air

The Calgary Flames are 8-2-0 over their last 10 games, helping to get the team back into the playoff conversation, and a big 4-1 win over the Winnipeg Jets yesterday earned the team two valuable points in a highly contested Eastern Conference.

And Flames defenseman TJ Brodie played a big role in securing that win.

Five minutes into the third period, with the Flames on the power play and hanging on to a 2-1 lead, the Jets created a shorthanded odd man rush that nearly resulted in the tying goal if not for Brodie.

The play started deep in the Winnipeg defensive zone where defenseman Mark Stuart knocked a loose puck up to Jets forward Blake Wheeler, who turned and brought the puck up the boards while teammate Drew Stafford drove the net. Wheeler made a nice deke around a sliding Falmes defender toward the slot before passing to a wide-open Stafford, who played the puck off his foot and then flicked a backhand toward a wide-open net. The puck would have easily gone in had Brodie not gotten back and knocked Stafford’s shot out of mid-air before it could cross the goal line, helping to preserve Calgary’s lead—and their eventual victory.
