A guide to the top six players you should be including in your next fantasy hockey team

Putting together your fantasy hockey team is one of the hardest decisions you will have to make all year. There are so many amazing plays across the 32 teams in the league. It can be hard to narrow your choices down.

But, don’t worry, we have your back. We have put in hours of research, watched the shots, and crunched the numbers to come up with our top six players in the NHL right now. Hopefully, this list will help you put together the perfect team when you play Fantasy Hockey this year.

#6 – Auston Matthews – Toronto Maple Leafs
NHL Network analyst Ken Daneyko said about Matthews – ‘He’s a beast and he’s only going to get better.’ Daneyko even commented that Matthews might have the potential to be one of the greatest of all time.

Matthews has played in the NHL since the start of the 2016-17 season, over that time he has scored more goals than anyone (except for Alex Ovechkin) – with a total of 158 goals over four years. Matthews has scored at least 34 goals each season and has improved his goal count year on year since joining the league.

If you are looking for a Center who will consistently score and assist goals – then Auston Matthews is your man.

#5 – Alex Ovechkin – Washington Capitals
Speaking of Alex Ovechkin’s impressive 181 goals since the start of the 2016-17 season, if Ovechkin doesn’t make your fantasy team this year, then you may want to reconsider.

Last season, not only did he score his 700th league goal (he is only the 7th person in history to do that), but he was the joint lead scorer of the season. This result won him the Rocket Richard Trophy for a record 9th time.

Ovechkin may not be the best all-around player out there, but he really does score goals like nobody else in the business.

#4 – David Pastrnak – Boston Bruins
The other joint high-scorer last season was David Pastrnak. This was his first time winning the Rocket Richard Trophy but he has been scoring consistently for a few years now.

Pastrnak racked up an impressive 49 points (18 goals, 31 assists) in 46 Stanley Cup playoff games over the last 4 years – a record anyone would be jealous of.

In this last season, Pastrnak also captured joint top of the game-winning goals list – with 10 under his belt.

Pastrnak comes from an ice skating family, so we’re not surprised by his success so far in his career.

#3 – Artemi Panarin – New York Rangers
As recent as the 2019-20 season, Artemi Panarin was a finalist for both the Hart Trophy and the Ted Lindsay Award, which is no small feat. Having scored points in 54 out of 69 games in 2019-20, Panarin has had a huge impact on the performance of the New York Rangers.

When talking about Panarin during 2019-20, E. J. Hradek said that Panarin had ‘a career season, 95 points, 63 assists, he’s a plus-36 player. … When he was on the ice, the Rangers were statistically a much better team.’

A goal scorer like Panarin is an obvious choice for any fantasy hockey team.

#2 – Nathan MacKinnon – Colorado Avalanche
Nathan MacKinnon was also a finalist for both the Hart Trophy and Ted Lindsay Awards last season. His performance for the season ended at 65 points (20 goals, 45 assists) in 48 games.

With 289 points (115 goals, 174 assists) over the last three seasons, he comes in at third in the league. Only being beaten by Kucherov and McDavid.

Where MacKinnon really shines is when he is able to show off his speed and his strength. There are very few people who can match him in either throughout the league.

Nathan MacKinnon is a must-pick – he is powerful, fast, and reliable. Plus he is incredibly fun to watch.

#1 – Connor McDavid – Edmonton Oilers
None of you will be surprised to see Connor McDavid at the top of this list. Despite only joining the league 5 seasons ago, many are already calling him one of the greatest NHL players of all time.

McDavid has the power. He has the speed. He has the ability to put pucks in the back of the net. And he has the ability to outsmart everyone else on the rink.

McDavid is the highest scorer over the last 5 seasons – despite having to take 37 games out due to injury in his rookie year. He boasts 469 (162 goals, 307 assists) in 351 games – his closest competitor is 4 points behind him but has played 46 more games than him.
