2011-12 NHL Season Preview: Washington Capitals

Alexander Ovechkin in Bauer Gear

Alexander Ovechkin looks to lead the Caps deep into the playoffs this season

Key Offseason Additions: Joel Ward, Tomas Vokoun, Roman Hamrlik, Jeff Halpern, Troy Brouwer

Key Offseason Losses: Matt Bradley, Scott Hannan

Last Season Ranking:1st in East

Offense: The Washington Capitals will continue to depend on three men to carry the offense this season: Alex Ovechkin, Nicklas Backstrom, and Alex Semin. Since the 2008-09 season, those three have lead the Capitals in scoring, in that same order. This year should be no different.

Alex Ovechkin is leaning on a new brand this season, dropping CCM and going with a trusted product in Bauer Hockey. That renewed trust in gear should help him near the 100 point mark, if not top it, for the season. As Ovechkin excels, so does linemate Nicklas Backstrom. Centering Ovi gives Backstrom the opportunity to pile on the assists, and add a few goals here and there as well. Semin, in the last year of his contract, has a lot to prove to this team. He’s been called out by former teammate Matt Bradley for not caring, and this is his season to prove that he’s a devoted team member. If these guys can all get on the right page again, and put forth their top effort, you’re going to see an incredible hockey club.

The Capitals have a lot of depth to go along with their top three scorers, beginning with Brooks Laich, who can be counted on for roughly 50 points per season. After a bit of a scoring slump last season, where he scored fewer than 20 goals for the first time since 2006-07, Laich will look to rebound and break the 20 goal mark once again. Joining Laich to provide depth will be guys like Mike Knuble, Jason Chimera, and the newly acquired Jeff Halpern and Troy Brouwer. These guys will all put up the depth points to help Washington continue to dominate the East.

Joel Ward, another off-season free agent signing, will be counted on to maintain his excellent scoring touch when he suits up for the Capitals this fall. Ward, who only managed 29 regular season points last season with the Predators, was virtually unstoppable in their playoff run. In 12 games played, Ward tallied 7 goals and 6 assists for 13 points. This run included two separate five game point streaks. Ward brings a big body to the team, and is also an underrated talent that could help the Caps get over that difficult hump come playoff time.

Finally, keep your eye on Marcus Johansson this season. In his rookie campaign last season, Johansson posted a solid 13 goals and 14 assists for 27 points in 69 games played. These numbers certainly aren’t bad considering the guy was fighting for playing time with an already extremely talented team. The way this kid can skate, pass, and shoot, he’s going to get plenty of opportunities playing alongside Washington’s top three.

Defense: Defensively, the Capitals continue to be lead by the offensive minded Mike Green. During an injury plagued season in 2010-11, Green piled up 24 points in 49 games. These numbers were certainly far below his expected output, but providing he’s healthy this season, watch for that output to approach 70 points once again.

Following in Green’s footsteps is the young John Carlson, who helped lead the Caps defense last season. Carlson is a young defender, at only 21 years old, but he’s growing up quick and has the talent to be a top defender in the league. He’ll be joined by another youngster, Karl Alzner, in carrying much of the load defensively for the Caps this season. Jeff Schultz, who has a few years under his belt, will add a bit of stability to the blue line.

Rounding out the defense will be free agent pickup Roman Hamrlik, along with a trade deadline acquisition from last season, Dennis Wideman. Both are very solid defenseman, who add a bit more experience and leadership to a young defense. The leadership they will add could be the key in developing a defense that not only leads the team through the season, but carries the team past the first two rounds of the playoffs as well.

Goaltending: Tomas Vokoun will join the Capitals this season after signing as a free agent over the summer. Vokoun turned down an offer from the Detroit Red Wings, among other teams, to have the shot at being a guaranteed starter out of the gate in Washington. Coming in at 35 years old, Vokoun could be coming right into his prime here as he joins the Caps. His numbers have been good playing for a sub-par team in Florida, so imagine what he will be able to accomplish with a team of all-stars in front of him. Michal Neuvirth will be on back-up duty this season, but should see a fair amount of games to ensure Vokoun stays well rested.

HWB Playoff Prediction: Playoff Bound. As usual the Caps have what it takes to get land a high seed. With a number of key off-season acquisitions, the Capitals management looks to have assembled a team that has the potential to make a serious run at the Stanley Cup this season. We’ve seen them implode early in years past, but something tells me this season will be different.

2011-12 NHL Season Preview: Florida Panthers

Key Offseason Additions: Scottie Upshall, Tomas Kopecky, Tomas Fleishmann, Kris Versteeg, Sean Bergenheim, Brian Campbell, Ed Jovanovski, Jose Theodore

Key Offseason Losses: Dennis Wideman, Marty Reasoner, Michael Frolik, Tomas Vokoun

Last Season Ranking: 15th in East

Stephen Weiss and David Booth are the only 2 from last year's top 6 forwards. Might need an ice breaker.

Stephen Weiss and David Booth are the only 2 from last year's top 6 forwards. Might need an ice breaker.

Offense: The Florida Panthers have made a complete overhaul of their team replacing four of their top six forwards. Sometimes too much change is a bad thing, but with the team missing the playoffs year after year, change is just what the doctor ordered.

Scottie Upshall has had a respectable 30 point per season career, but for many, believe he is capable of doing a lot more. The difficulty for Upshall is staying healthy which has seen him play all but one full season over his career. A fast, strong skater, it will be nice to see if he pairs up with Stephen Weiss and David Booth. If so, his fantasy stock could rise as a sleeper pick.

Florida’s additions were nothing of any great superstars, but of all talented players that can chip in. Going with the thought that the sum is greater than the parts, the team has added depth with Tomas Kopecky, Tomas Flesichmann and Kris Versteeg. Together, the three combined for 48 goals, 71 assists to total 119 points. This should greatly improve the Panthers top two lines if the new players can gel with one another.

Defense: Like the offense, the Panthers have tweaked their top two defensive pairings.

Puck moving defenseman Brian Campbell is capable of putting up 50 points if he can stay healthy. The forecast may not look so good as he has had shortened seasons for the past two years.

Veteran Ed Jovanoski has been added and will balance the team out with some grit and hard work. He is a player you at to play against but would love to have on your team. A downside he is getting older, but the positive, he plays younger than what he is.

The Panthers still have some talented players that will pair with either of the two previous mentioned. Dmitry Kulikov is coming into his third season as a professional and looks to better his last year’s stats of 6 goals and 20 assists. Similarly, Keaton Ellerby is also coming into his third season as a professional and had 2 goals and 10 assists last year. Both young players will help ease the burden of old age on the added veteran defenseman.

Goaltending: The Panthers have always had a good goalie, but never a team in front of him. Tomas Vokoun has headed to the Washington Capitals as the Panthers have picked up Jose Theodore to take the number one spot. Theodore had some great seasons in Washington, notching 62 wins in 104 games played over two seasons. Although he is the same age as Vokoun, Theodore looks to be more acrobatic and should add greater value to the team.

HWB Playoff Prediction: Not playoff bound. Oh how we miss you Florida, please return sometime soon to the playoffs with your rubber rats.

Free Agency Recap: July 2

Yesterday wasn’t as packed with the number of transactions as Friday, but there was just as much fireworks and we haven’t even reached Independence Day here in the United States. The biggest move of the day was goaltender Tomas Vokoun signing a single-season contract with the Washington Capitals. The other highlighted move of the day was the end of the Brad Richards sweepstakes as he is taking his talents to Broadway to play with the New York Rangers.

The signing of Vokoun leaves hockey fans outside of the District scratching their heads as they were led to believe the departure of Semyon Varlamov would leave the goaltending duties to youngsters Michal Neuvirth and Braden Holtby. But Caps GM George McPhee said he wanted to add an “elite veteran goaltender”, which I consider to be a stretch because although Vokoun is a solid goalie, he isn’t considered elite as he has been stuck on a bad team the last four seasons in Florida. His numbers last season were 22-28-5 with a 2.55 goals-against average and a .922 save percentage. His save percentage has been .919 or higher in each of the last six seasons. He also has the second-best save percentage (.923) among the 15 NHL goaltenders who have made at least 5,000 saves in the past four years. His contract is reported to be around $1.5 million.

The New York Rangers came out winning the Brad Richards sweepstakes, with one of the biggest names on the free-agent market heading to Madison Square Garden with a reported nine-year, $60 million contract. The deal will reunite Richards with bench boss John Tortrella, the man that made Richards a Stanley Cup champion and Con Smythe Award winner in 2004 with Tampa Bay. Richards long said he wanted to play for a franchise with stable ownership, something he didn’t have at the end of his tenure with Tampa Bay and Dallas. Throw in the benefit of playing in a large market and one of the Original Six franchises and it was a perfect match for both sides.

Believe it or not, it wasn’t all about the money because the Rangers weren’t offering the most money. Quite a few teams outbid New York including Toronto, Los Angeles, and Calgary but those teams couldn’t offer everything else that he desired. The Rangers expect him to center the top line and the power play unit with Marian Gaborik playing on the right wing.

In other news coming out of Toronto Sunday morning, the Maple Leafs and Nashville Predators announced a four-player swap, with Brett Lebda and minor league forward Robert Stanley going to the Music City in exchange for Cody Franson and Mathew Lombardi.

The deal does come with stipulations, the Leafs will send its fourth-round pick in the 2013 Entry Draft to Nashville if Lombardi plays a total of 60 games or more over the course of the next two seasons. In the event that Lombardi plays less than 60 games in that span, Nashville will instead send its fourth-round selection from the 2013 Entry Draft to Toronto. Either way, a fourth-round selection in 2013 is at stake in the deal.

Lombardi, 29, was impressive during his 53-point season in 2009-10 with Phoenix, but after signing a three-year deal with Nashville last July he managed to play in only two games due to a concussion suffered in a preseason game. Franson scored 8 goals and 21 assists last season for the Predators.

Hockey World Blog Season Previews 2010: Florida Panthers

nothing much to get excited about with Florida this year unless another flasher sighting happens.

Nothing much to get excited about with Florida this year. That is unless you watch intently for another flasher sighting.

Key Offseason Losses: Keith Ballard, Nathan Horton

Key Offseason Additions: Christopher Higgins, Dennis Wideman, Steven Reinprecht

Last Season Ranking: 14th, East

Offense: The Florida Panthers have a talented core in Stephen Weiss and David Booth. Weiss picked up 60 points last season to carry the team in the absence of David Booth’s injury from Philadelphia Flyer’s Mike Richards head shot. The two, if healthy, should each post 50+ points in a competition for the team’s point leader.

Florida lost their 3rd main man Nathan Horton, yet picked up veteran players Christopher Higgins and Steven Reinprecht. Together the two will add some experience, as well as the ability to put the puck in the net.Reinprecht had 16 goals and 22 assists last year with the Phoenix Coyotes while Higgins is coming off of two mediocre seasons, but has the ability to post 40+ points.

Returning players to keep an eye on are Michael Frolik and his balanced play style as well as Cory Stillman and his veteran point production performance.

Defense: The bad news; the team lost Keith Ballard to the Vancouver Canucks. Ballard was a solid defender and a good setup man. The good news; the team has gained an equally talented Dennis Wideman from the Boston Bruins. Wideman had 30 points last season with 11 of those being power play assists, a much needed addition for the Panthers.

Wideman will be lining leading point defender Bryan McCabe. McCabe had 43 points last season with the expectation of doing even better this year.

The downfall though comes after the first pairing, the Panthers have no one really worth mentioning. Perhaps their management team forgot the saying, “Defense wins championships”.

Goaltending: Starter Tomas Vokoun will get the majority of starts while sharing the net with backup Scott Clemmensen. The two together should be able to post some good numbers despite having weak defense. Vokoun has a career .916 save percentage and had a respectable 7 shutouts last season.

Season Outlook: The Florida Panthers had a tough break last season with the injury to star player David Booth. Losing one of your top players always hurts, but this year he is back and healthy. The team added some key role players and some veteran presence that always helps any team. Still though the offensive talent will go to waste with the lack of depth in defense. It will be short of a miracle if the team makes the post season.

Ovechkin Injured and Vokoun Leaves on a Stretcher

Alex Ovechkin injured himself on a knee to knee hit tonight and could face a suspension in addition to his injury

Alex Ovechkin injured himself on a knee to knee hit tonight and could face a suspension in addition to his injury

As you already know, the 2009-10 NHL season has been filled with countless injuries. It’s been estimated at times that up to 20% of the league’s players at the start of the season are out of action due to injury. Tonight, two more big names went down.

First and foremost, Alexander Ovechkin. He left the game against the Carolina Hurricanes during the first period after initiating a knee to knee hit on Tim Gleason. Ovechkin was given a 5 minute kneeing major on the play, as well as a 10 minute game misconduct. Knee to knee hits can be extremely dangerous, as we saw with Niklas Kronwall who is out 4-8 weeks after being on the receiving end of the dirty play. Ovechkin remained down on the ice for several minutes after the play, and eventually had to be helped off. The extent of the injury won’t be known until tomorrow, but it certainly doesn’t look good. Tim Gleason went down on the play as well, but looked to be okay as he came back out on the power-play afterwards. Ovechkin could be looking at a suspension for his hit, even though he took the worst of it. The NHL will be looking into it and may continue laying down penalties for stupid plays that don’t belong in the game. Video of the hit is here.

In Atlanta tonight, Florida Panthers goaltender Tomas Vokoun had to be taken off the ice on a stretcher after being struck in the head by the stick of frustrated teammate Keith Ballard. Ballard, who was disgusted after Ilya Kovalchuk scored his 15th of the season, attempted to swing his stick across the goal post but instead caught Vokoun in the head. Vokoun was cut on the play, and the extent of his injury is unknown. Ballard meanwhile, after realizing what he had done, was still pretty insistent on breaking that stick. He took another swing and successfully broke it before heading to the bench, leaving his goaltender laying on the ice writhing in pain. Video can be seen here.
