Developing Story: Modano will Come Home

According to a Detroit Free Press report posted late Monday, forward Mike Modano will sign with the Detroit Red Wings. In the report, Modano sent the Free Press a text message only saying “Big announcement Thursday”. Modano wouldn’t tip his hand, but sources close to Modano say he’s signing with Detroit. Modano is also entertaining offers from San Jose and Minnesota.

Modano, 40, is the highest-scoring American-born player in NHL history. This is somewhat of a historic off season for Modano, who has spent his entire career with one team. He spent the previous 20 seasons with the Minnesota North Stars/Dallas Stars franchise.

Modano is a native of Westland, Mich., a Detroit suburb. The ice arena in Westland is named after Modano. He was offered a one-year, $1.25 million contract. He is expected to anchor the third line, which will give Detroit three quality scoring lines.

Modano to Detroit?

Once I heard Mike Modano possibly being signed by Detroit this I had to take a double take. Could it be, the player I grew up watching and loving, a home grown Michigander, possibly playing for my home team? The thought still makes me tingle with anticipation.

Mike Modano is on the verge of retiring as the Dallas Stars have decided to part ways with their once franchise player. Modano is no spring chicken anymore, this is not contested, but he has plenty left in the tank. Modano played only 59 games last season and the majority of that on the third and fourth lines but put up a respectable 30 points. Modano’s strong suit is on the power play where he posted 3 goals and 7 assists. Ok, I know right now you are saying 10 points is pretty low, but factor in he did not play much on the power play, he did just fine.

Detroit currently, as always, waits on free agency to see who they can get for cheap and under the cap space. With Detroit losing a few free agents by will,  most likely including Jason Williams who did play point on the power play, it would make sense not only from a cap space opportunity to sign Modano, but also because he can work with young up and coming stars like Justin Abdelkader and Darren Helm.

Please Detroit, I know I have criticized you for signing old and over the hill players, but please sign Modano, I guarantee I will purchase a jersey with his new number on it. (9 is retired, 19 is retired, what other combination with 9 could he take?)

Bertuzzi playing hard ball with Wings; Cheechoo to be bought out?

It appears as if unrestricted free agent Todd Bertuzzi may opt to test the open market to see if any more lucrative offers come along than the two-year deal that the Red Wings offered that is most likely worth around the $1.5 million per season that Bertuzzi made this past year.

Detroit Red Wings general manager Ken Holland appeared on the “NHL Live” radio program where he touched upon several topics including his ongoing negotiations with Bertuzzi and his agent Pat Morris.

“We have interest in him coming back,” Holland said of Bertuzzi. “I think he’s interested in coming back. But it’s a cap world. We only have so much to offer.”

Prior to this past season, Bertuzzi had spent time in a Wings uniform once before after he was acquired from Florida at the trade deadline in 2007. When the season ended, indications were that Bertuzzi was interested in staying and that the Wings were interested in keeping him. However, Bertuzzi left the organization during the free agency period to sign a two-year deal with the Anaheim Ducks for $8 million. Bertuzzi was later placed on waivers by the Ducks.

“We’ll continue to talk to him,” Holland said. “We’d like to have him back, but obviously, there’s gotta be a fit financially for the player and for us. Talks are ongoing. We’ll see where they go.”

In other news, reports are also circulating that the Ottawa Senators are looking to buy out the contract of forward Jonathan Cheechoo when the NHL buyout period begins next week. During that time, each team has a two week window in which they can buy out players for 2/3 of the value of their current salary to be paid over two-times the length of the agreed deal. Cheechoo is signed for $3.5 million for next season which would give the Senators a cap hit of $1,165,500 cap hit for the next 2 seasons.

Cheechoo came to Ottawa last summer as a part of the Dany Heatley trade that sent Heatley to San Jose in exchange for Cheechoo, forward Milan Michalek and a fifth round draft pick in the upcoming draft. The 29-year-old finished the season with five goals and nine assists for 14 points in 61 games with the Senators. Cheechoo also spent time with Ottawa’s AHL affiliate, the Binghamton Senators, where he totalled another 14 points in 25 games.

Cheechoo’s best performance came in 2005-2006 when he tallied 56 goals and 93 points in 82 games for the San Jose Sharks alongside center Joe Thornton. Since that season, Cheechoo’s numbers have steadily declined.

No word yet on where Cheechoo could end up, although several teams could look to sign Cheechoo later this summer to add depth to their lineup for a low cost. One interesting scenario would be if the Pittsburgh Penguins took a chance and signed Cheechoo for cheap this summer. Pittsburgh has taken chances on wingers in the past who fell to the late stages of free agency, such as Miroslav Satan, to experiment and see if they thrive alongside Sidney Crosby, who the Penguins are constantly trying to match with a suitable winger. Cheechoo had his best season alongside center Joe Thornton in San Jose and could possibly rejuvenate his career alongside Sidney Crosby.

The Captain is Back

Detroit Red Wings defenseman Nicklas Lidstrom signed a one-year contract with a reportedly $6 Million+ contract to remain in the Motor City for a 19th season. Reports Tuesday morning from various Detroit media sources reported the signing to be between $5 and $7 Million dollars. Lidstrom made $7.45 Million last season, when he did not make the Norris Trophy finalist list despite winning it  six of the last eight seasons.

Lidstrom, 40, scored 9 goals and 40 assists and was a plus-22 in 82 regular-season games. He finished tied for eighth among League defensemen in points, tied for seventh in plus-minus, and seventh in shots (194). In the Stanley Cup Playoffs, he scored 4 goals and 6 assists in 12 games.

He is still the best defenseman on the team and still can play. Lidstrom may have dropped to the fifth-sixth best blueliner in the league, he is still effective in shutting down opponents and scoring clutch goals. In the regular season, he was second on the team in plus-minus at +22.

Some fans in Detroit wished he could given the team more of a “hometown discount” to allow the cap space to sign another quality forward, but Lidstrom will be making less than he did last season. He is the second player the team has added this off-season, joining Jiri Hudler who returns after spending last season in the KHL.

Hudler Returns to Detroit Next Season

Jiri Hudler Returns to Detroit Next Season

Jiri Hudler Returns to Detroit Next Season

With Jiri Hudler and the Moscow Dynamo seeing an early first round exit from the KHL playoffs, talks began to heat up around the potential return of Hudler to the NHL, and the Detroit Red Wings. Now, it has been made official, Happy Hudler will wear the winged wheel once again. Hudler has been released from his contract with the KHL, and will honor the two year deal he was awarded in arbitration last summer.

Hudler re-joins the the Red Wings during what looks to be the prime of his career. During the 2008-09 season, he amassed 23 goals and 34 assists for 57 points in 82 regular season games. His contributions in the playoffs have been vital as well, adding to the secondary scoring that is most crucial for long playoff runs. Last season in the KHL, Hudler finished the season on a point per game pace, notching 19 goals and 35 assists for 54 points in as many games. Expect Hudler to make an impact immediately with the Wings next season, seeing time on one of top two lines.

This addition for the 2010-11 roster, leaves a lot of questions for the Wings this off-season. Forwards Tomas Holmstrom, Todd Bertuzzi, Jason Williams, Kirk Maltby, and Brad May are all unrestricted free agents. In addition, Darren Helm, Justin Abdelkader, Patrick Eaves, Drew Miller and Mattias Ritola are all restricted free agents. With 7 forwards still under contract for next season, it looks like about half of the aforementioned players could be seeing ice time elsewhere next season, or decide to retire.

Coyotes moving Forward in Game 7

“…you’ve got to ask yourself one question: Do I feel lucky? Well, do ya, punk?” – Dirty Harry

What was perceived pure luck at the beginning of the season, the Phoenix Coyotes have not only turned heads, but turned people into fans. A story that will rival that of the Bad News Bears, a team that had nothing, back against the wall, franchise going under, is now fighting in game 7 of the 2009 – 2010 NHL Playoffs against the the powerhouse Detroit Red Wings.

The two teams come into this series with many different strengths and weaknesses, but all the same, they come in wanting to win. Or so it seems.

I’ve seen many games in my day, both watching and playing, and I know a team when they are hungry. To me, the Detroit Red Wings are not hungry, they lack the needed drive that their opponents the Coyote’s have. You beg to differ perhaps? Matt reminded us all of the “Doan Face”, an image of pure craziness and pure intensity. The Red Wings, they don’t have that.

In game 6 of the series at the Red Wing’s home ice of the Joe Louis Arena, the Wing’s got off to a bad start. Defenseman Brad Stuart coughed up the puck on one of the most dumb moment hockey I have seen in a while. Trust me people, playing with the other writers on this blog, I’ve seen some dumb moment hockey before. The lackluster, dumb hockey continued throughout the game for the Wings.

Looking at the other end of the ice, the Phoenix Coyotes scored 3 power play goals, and to put a cherry on top, they also scored a shorthanded goal within the first 5 minutes of the game. In the corners the Coyotes were out hustling the Red Wings. They were first to the puck, toughest on the puck, and overall played harder.

Perhaps I am being a little harsh on the Red Wings, maybe, maybe not. Matt and I may agree that the Coyotes will win in game 7, but we do disagree on one thing; it is not that Detroit will be bad enough to lose, but that the Phoenix Coyotes are a better team. The passing of the flame starts tonight, as the old, tired, Detroit Red Wings will learn that being a slow skating puck position team is not what will earn you a win, it is hard work of every shift and the faster open ice game that will advance you in the playoffs.

I look forward to wearing my Coyote’s hat after tonight without the ridicule of my family, friends and neighbors.

Eddie On Why Red Wings Will Win Game 7

In less than 9 hours, the Red Wings and Coyotes will be playing game 7 of the first round series. I believe the Red Wings will win the game for a few reasons.

  • This crew of Red Wings haven’t faced a game 7 in the first round

This isn’t your father’s Red Wings. While there are a lot of old faces like Maltby, Holmstrom, Lidstrom, etc. This Red Wings crew doesn’t want the ride to end. Should they lose this game, who knows how many more opportunities the aforementioned players will get to win another Stanley Cup?

  • More pressure is on the home team

As we saw in last year’s Stanley Cup Final against Pittsburgh, more pressure was on the Wings because they were the home team and was expected to win. I believe the Red Wings simply tried too hard to win that game.

  • In a seven game series, the better team will win

The Wings have no more excuses to use. They were hurt most of the regular season and now they are healthy in the playoffs. They are the best team in the league after the Olympic break and it all comes down to one game. 60 minutes hockey to determine if they play another day or go home. I still believe from top to bottom they are the better team.

Detroit’s Keys to Victory

  • They have to score first

As the road team, the main key is to score first and score early. In similar fashion to what Phoenix did in game six, after Detroit failed on the string of power plays, Phoenix took advantage of a turnover and scored a shorthanded goal. The Red Wings have to get the first goal to quiet the Phoenix crowd and make the Coyotes play from behind.

  • Get goals from B-List players Johan Fanzen and Dan Cleary

Franzen and Cleary have been studs the last two years in the playoffs. This year, Franzen has lived up his billing while Cleary has recorded 0’s across the stat line in six games. A late goal by either one of those would be big for the Red Wings to advance.

  • Finish in Regulation

A game 7 is like a 60-minute overtime game. Make it sudden death and the smallest turnover, deflection, icing call, or lost face off in the defensive zone can end your season. In the game is tied with five minutes left in regulation, that’s when sudden death hockey begins.

Jimmy Howard just has to give the Red Wings a chance to win in game seven. Howard cannot afford to allow any soft goals tonight.

Jimmy Howard just has to give the Red Wings a chance to win in game seven. Howard cannot afford to allow any soft goals tonight.

  • Protect Jimmy Howard

The defense has to clear out the front of the net for any rebounds or second chances Phoenix can have. The blueliners for Detroit have to put on a performance seen in games four and five. They have to let Jimmy Howard see the puck and then proceed to clear it from the slot or setup a breakout in transition. Not to mention that Phoenix has good defensemen themselves who move the puck just as well as the Detroit defensemen.

  • Stay out of the penalty box

Just like we saw in games one and six, the Red Wings have to stay out of the penalty box. The Red Wings failed to allow a power play goal between games two and five, but allowed Phoenix to light the lamp several times in game six. They cannot afford to put the game in the officials hands, they have to take it themselves.

Do Not Try This At Home: Flying Octopi

During the Red Wings-Coyotes series, we have seen plenty of Red Wings fans in Phoenix during the television broadcast. We have also seen octopi thrown on the ice in Glendale. During game 2 of the series, some daring Detroit fans not only took one for the team and got arrested/thrown in jail because they threw octopi on the ice. I’m most impressed at how they got the entire thing on tape.

Phoenix Coyotes Win Game 7, Here’s Why

Coyotes captain Shane Doan scares off opponents with the Doan face

Coyotes captain Shane Doan scares off opponents with the Doan face

While I’m not on the Phoenix Coyote bandwagon, like EB, and I root for my hometown Detroit Red Wings, I just don’t think they have what it takes to win Game 7 in Glendale tonight.

This series has been very well coached from the beginning. Some errors have been made here and there, but overall you have, arguably, the league’s best coach in Mike Babcock, going against a sure thing for coach of the year in Dave Tippett. The biggest difference I notice between the two, is how their respective players show up for every game. While the Coyotes are playing their hearts out every night, some Red Wings appear to only show up when they want to.

Mike Babcock often says he loves the playoffs because it keeps you honest. His team knows what they need to do, but lately its been a challenge for them to actually get on to the ice and do it. On the other hand, Dave Tippet’s squad knows how to bring it each and every game. They are playing high energy, physical, playoff style hockey. Plus, not only are they playing to keep their season alive, but they’re playing for their coach too. Somewhere along the line, this seems to have been lost for the Red Wings.

While coaching isn’t everything, some of the philosophies remain strong. Babcock is also a fan of telling the media that the Red Wings best players need to be their best players. This means guys like Datsyuk, Zetterberg, Franzen, Lidstrom, and so on, all need to step up. When the only guys showing any urgency are players like Helm, Abdelkader, Eaves, and Miller, you have to question who is playing playoff hockey? They may not be all stars, but every shift they go out there and lay everything on the table. The same cannot be said about the Red Wings big names recently.

When it comes down to game time, the players decide everything. Right now, everything is going the way of the Phoenix Coyotes. Tonight’s home crowd is going to be rowdy, full of energy, and ready to celebrate a series clinching victory. Ilya Bryzgalov will be in a position to lead his team to victory. His all out effort, and save after save performance will give his players and the home crowd a giant boost from the get go. On top of that, the strong defense and penalty killing we saw in Game 6 will return tonight.

It’s not so much that Phoenix will be good enough to win, but more or less that Detroit will be bad enough to lose. Rookie goaltender Jimmy Howard faces a lot of controversy after calling the Coyotes latest victory “lucky.” In his first playoff series, and first game 7, I don’t think he has what it takes just yet. He has been shaky, at best, in four out of six games thus far. While he will come to play tonight, a soft goal or two will lead to the ultimate demise of the Red Wings Stanley Cup dreams.

Prediction: Ilya Bryzgalov outplays Jimmy Howard in a battle of the netminders, while the Coyotes defense and penalty kill will stifle the Red Wings once again. A close 3-2 game down the stretch will be sealed by an empty netter for the Coyotes, who will advance to play San Jose in round two. Final score, 4-2, and the Doan face haunts the Red Wings all summer.

Seven storylines to follow during the final seven games of the NHL season

Playoffs are merely two weeks away with about seven games remaining on the regular season schedule for most franchises. Still, a lot can happen in seven games. As the season winds down and teams gear up for playoffs, here are seven story lines that you might not want to miss as an NHL fan:

7.) Can the Avs Hang On? The Colorado Avalanche are one of two teams that defied preseason expectations this year and found themselves in the top half of the Western Conference for a good portion of the season despite being picked to finish near-dead last. However, over the last month or so as teams jockey for playoff positioning, the Avs have found themselves the odd team out after being leapfrogged by the Detroit Red Wings, Nashville Predators and Los Angeles Kings in the standings. Can the Avs hang on to the eighth seed in the West with Calgary hot on their tail? With a young core full of stars in the making, the Avalanche have a lot to build on regardless of how this season plays out.

6.) Where Will the Leafs End Up? The Leafs got themselves a great player when they traded for Phil Kessel in the offseason. Kessel has 30 goals and 54 points in 65 games for the Maple Leafs this year. However, in order to acquire the sniper from Boston, the Leafs had to trade away several draft picks – including a first-round pick in this summer’s draft. Right now, that draft picks looks to be a number two overall pick for the Bruins. That could mean nabbing either Taylor Hall or Tyler Seguin, the two highly-touted prospects expected to be taken as the first two overall players in the draft this year. Both players are having incredible seasons with over 100 points in the OHL. But, at 69 points, the Leafs are only three points behind the Tampa Bay Lightning, Florida Panthers and New York Islanders. With a playoff spot out of the picture, the Leafs are focusing on a strong finish to ensure a lower pick for the Bruins. Who will get the better end of the Kessel deal? We’ll see in two weeks.

5.) Outside Looking In: West - The Calgary Flames are the only real threat in the Western Conference outside of the playoff picture but looking to make a strong push at the end. With 85 points on the season, the Flames are four points behind the eighth seeded Colorado Avalanche. The St. Louis Blues are a long shot for a playoff spot with 83 points. Calgary has a tough schedule remaining, but they were able to take down the top-seeded Washington Capitals last weekend to keep their playoff hopes alive. Anything can happen in the NHL at playoff time.

4.) Outside Looking In: East – The playoff picture is much tighter in the East for the bubble teams. Only four points separate the tenth-seeded New York Rangers (78 points) from the sixth-seeded Philadelphia Flyers (82 points), which makes the remaining seven games that much more important for the teams fighting for the last few playoff spots in the West. The Boston Bruins and Montreal Canadiens each have 82 points and sit in the seventh and eighth seeds respectively while the Atlanta Thrashers occupy the ninth seed with 80 points. However, the Canadiens have lost three in a row while the Atlanta Thrashers are playing some good hockey in the ninth seed and could pass the Canadiens with a few more strong performances. These teams are all fighting for their playoff lives, and it may come down to the last day of the season to see who’s in and who’s out in the East.

3.) Does Chicago Have a #1 Netminder? The Chicago Blackhawks, a perennial favorite to go to the Stanley Cup Finals, shelled out big bucks a few years back for goaltender Cristobal Huet. Needless to say, he hasn’t lived up to expectations. In 46 starts for the Blackhawks this season, Huet has a 2.50 goals against average and a .895 save percentage. While going head-to-head with backup goalie Antti Niemi in recent weeks, Huet seems to be doing everything in his power to give up the starting job going into playoffs. Niemi has better numbers than Huet with a .909 save percentage and 2.31 goals against average, but has only won three of his eight starts in March. However, two of those starts were shutouts. Regardless, neither goalie has embraced the starting job like a playoff goalie needs to. Will a starting goalie emerge in the seven remaining games for the Hawks before playoffs start?

2.) The Detroit Red Wings Sweepstakes - Detroit has won six games in a row and has garnered at least one point in each of their last ten. They are streaking up the standings and up the power rankings and are easily the hottest team in the NHL right now with all of their players healthy. The Wings are becoming that low-ranked team with a lot of potential that you don’t want to meet in the first round of the playoffs. One blogger went as far as to say that San Jose was purposely throwing games in order to avoid meeting the Red Wings in the first round. That might not be a bad strategy seeing that the Wings have had San Jose’s number all season. Can the Wins continue their impressive pace and finish the season strong in the standings? More importantly, can they keep up that impressive pace once playoffs begin in April?

1.) The Rocket Richard Race – Sidney Crosby leads the race with 47 goals, but Alexander Ovechkin and Steve Stamkos are right on his heels with 46 goals a piece. Ovechkin has won the trophy the past two years, but this could be Crosby’s year to shine as a goal-scoring machine. Stamkos came out of nowhere during a huge sophomore surge to stay on pace with Crosby and Ovechkin and could easily take home the trophy as well. All three players have cooled off in recent weeks, making the Rocket Richard Trophy for most goals in a season anyone’s to step up and grab at this point.
