Kovalev, Ellis highlight busy day of trades

This year’s trade deadline continues to shape up into one of the most active in recent history. With four days still remaining until the actual trade deadline, several big name players were on the move today with even more teams getting into the hunt for top-tier talent as they look to stay competitive with their rivals and give themselves the best chance at winning the Stanley Cup.

The Montreal Canadiens put themselves into the mix by acquiring defenseman Brent Sopel and forward Nigel Dawes from the Atlanta Thrashers. The move to get Sopel is a necessary one as Montreal’s blue line has been plagued by injuries all season and the recent reports that defenseman Jaroslav Spacek could be done for the season make the addition of Sopel, a solid penalty killer and shot-blocker, even more important. The Canadiens are 9th in the league in goals against per game and they want to keep it that way.

The Tampa Bay Lightning and Anaheim Ducks were also active this afternoon  in the goalie department as the Lightning sent goaltender Dan Ellis (pictured) to Anaheim in exchange for goaltender Curtis McElhinney. This is an interesting trade, especially from the Lightning’s point of view. Ellis, who will be under contract until the end of next season, was brought in this past summer to be a starting goaltender for Tampa but eventually lost the job to Dwayne Roloson, who the Lightning acquired through a trade with the Islanders. Either the Lightning are looking to ride Roloson through the playoffs with McElhinney as the backup, or general manager Steve Yzerman is setting up to make a push at another goalie before the trade deadline hits. Could Yzerman make a pass at cross-state rival Tomas Vokoun?

The Tampa/Anaheim trade is a good one for the Ducks, however, and gives the team another solid option in goal with starting netminder Jonas Hiller still feeling the effects of what the team is calling vertigo symptoms.

Perhaps one of the biggest deals of the day, however, involved the Pittsburgh Penguins as they look for options to help solidify their struggling offense. With superstar Evgeni Malkin done for the season and captain Sidney Crosby still sidelined with concussion symptoms, the team made a move to bring in more offensive depth by acquiring Alex Kovalev from the Ottawa Senators in exchange for a conditional seventh-round draft pick. Kovalev, who played with Pittsburgh from 1998 until 2003, should benefit from the change in scenery. Earlier this season Kovalev made public statements about his unhappiness in Ottawa and his general role on the team.

Forward Cory Stillman will also find himself in familiar territory as he was acquired by the Carolina Hurricane in exchange for forward Ryan Carter and a fifth-round draft pick at this year’s draft. Stillman had to waive his no-trade clause in order to be moved to Carolina where he played for three seasons between 2005 and 2008.

The Philadelphia Flyers didn’t make a trade today, but they made a significant move by waiving forward Nikolay Zherdev. Zherdev could offer some value elsewhere if claimed but has largely been an underachieving disappointment for the Flyers this season by contributing only 15 goals and four assists – a far cry from his career-best output of 26 goals and 61 points just a few seasons ago in Columbus. Again, this could just be a set-up move as the Flyers look to create room for a bigger addition in the days to come.

Although several big-name players have already been moved over the past few weeks, many more could find themselves in a new uniform before all is said and done. Each day brings more rumors with names like John-Michael Liles and Paul Stastny now popping up in Colorado and the will-they-or-won’t-they storyline concerning Brad Richards and the Dallas Stars still a hot topic in the media. And the blockbuster events last weekend proved that seemingly no player is untouchable at the trade deadline. Look for many more teams to get in on the action and make significant moves over the next few days before the trade freeze hits the NHL at 3 p.m. on Monday.

Hockey World Blog Season Previews 2010: Chicago Blackhawks

Key Offseason Losses: Antti Niemi, Andrew Ladd, John Madden, Brent Sopel, Ben Eager, Dustin Byfuglien, Cristobal Huet

Key Offseason Additions: Ryan Potulny, Marty Turco

Last Season Ranking: 2nd, West. Stanley Cup Champions

Offense: Much is to be desired about the defending Stanley Cup Champions and their offensive power. Young leaders Jonathan Toews and Patrick Kane had very good stats last season. Toews was one point shy of his career high posting 68 points in 76 games and a very impressive +22 rating. Kane however did go above and beyond his previous career high of 72 points, only to match his player number at 88 points. That total came from 30 goals and 58 assists, 29 of those points on the powerplay.

The team however has lost a lot of talent, mainly to the Atlanta Thrashers in a 7 man deal, but still looks to compete in this upcoming season and defend their reigning title. Patrick Sharp and Marian Hossa need to have another excellent year to help carry the load. Sharp alos had a career high of 66 points last season, while Hossa nearly had a career low with only 51 points. Hossa was battling injuries from his head to his toes last season, but if healthy, could very well reach numbers in the 70 and up range.

Defense: What a great year for Duncan Keith last season. A career high of 69 points, loses almost all his teeth, and a Stanley Cup ring. Keith will be the backbone of the defense and will most likely be the leading time on ice player for the Blackhawks.

The rest of the defending core needs to step up this year. Young Niklas Hjalmarsson looks to improve upon his first career full season, 17 points in 77 games and a +9 rating. Injury plagued Brian Campbell looks to play a full season and returning to his once 50+ point season days. Lastly, Brent Seabrook will be given more time on ice after his 30 point, +20 season last year.

Sure Andrew Ladd may not be with team, as many other players, still you cannot count out the young and talented Chicago Blackhawks for a reapeat.

Sure Andrew Ladd may not be with team, as many other players, still you cannot count out the young and talented Chicago Blackhawks for a repeat.

Goaltending: If there ever was a question of GM Stan Bowman’s decisions, it lies in the goalie fiasco. Cristobal Huet is heading to the Swiss league and Antti Niemi is now on Conference rival the San Jose Sharks. Together, two combined for a 52-21-8 record. That is a whole lot of wins gone out the door.

The Blackhawks instead have decided to sign veteran, on his way out of the league, Marty Turco. Turco has spent all his days in the Dallas Stars organization, so it will be interesting to see how he fares with a new team. In Turco’s career he has a 262-154-37 record, as well as 26 ties in there from the old days, as well as a combined 2.31 goals against average and .911 save percentage.

Since Turco is not quite a young whipper snapper, backup net-minder Corey Crawford will get more playing time this season.  With only 8 game splayed in 3 seasons, it sure will be interesting to see how he does with more time. Crawford is a butterfly goalie excelling at stopping the first initial shot.

Season Outlook: It is tough to say what to expect from the reigning Stanley Cup Champions the Chicago Blackhawks. Indeed the team went all out last season in going for victory or nothing, but the team still does have a talented, young core of players. Many fans have written them off this year, however once they make the playoffs, anything can happen in a 7 game series.

Lord Stanley to ride in Gay Parade

Brendan Burke standing near Lord Stanley. Brendan, an openly gay male, recently passed away this year in a fatal car accident.

The Stanley Cup will ride in it’s first ever gay themed event at Chicago’s Gay Pride Parade. The Chicago Gay Hockey Association extended an invite to the Chicago Blackhawks and the team gladly accepted.

The Cup will be accompanied by defense-man Brent Sopel of the Blackhawks now Atlanta Thrasher along with his wife. Sopel, once playing under General Manager Brian Burke, wishes to pay tribute to Burke’s son Brendan whom lost his life in a car accident earlier this year.

Brendan Burke was a recently open gay male before he lost his life to a tragic accident. In a time where gay rights are still not on par to those of heterosexuals, it is important for sports teams to lead the way and show their appreciation of their fans, regardless of sexual orientation. Hopefully events such as these can assist in paving the way for an equal and better world.

The Chicago Cubs also will be present at the parade, sporting a vehicle decorated in brick and ivy design reminiscent of the classic Wrigley Field outfield wall.
