Chicago Could be on All-Star Game Radar

The Chicago Blackhawks Ice Crew would be excited if the NHL awards them an All-Star Game in the future.

The Chicago branch of The Mothership is reporting the Chicago Blackhawks are interested in hosting  a NHL All-Star game in the near future. It doesn’t hurt that the Blackhawks have seen a surge in popularity in recent years when Rocky Wirtz took the team over from his father, leading to acquiring star players Patrick Kane, Patrick Sharp, Jonathan Toews and Marian Hossa. This squad won the Stanley Cup two seasons ago and are currently in 6th position in the West.

“(The Blackhawks) expressed interest in another All-Star Game, and the draft too, but more the All-Star Game,” Commissioner Gary Bettman said Thursday. 1991 was the last time the Blackhawks hosted the All-Star Game, and that was at Chicago Stadium. It could be 2015 at the earliest, because division-foe Columbus is slated to host the All-Star Game next year. 2013 is unannounced but it is unlikely two teams in the same division and area of the country would have it two years straight. The Sochi Winter Olympics will take place in 2014 and it still is unknown if Bettman and the NHLPA will agree to take a league-wide break during the Olympics like in previous years. If they do take a break, there will not be an All-Star Game which leads to 2015 as the projected season.

Chicago has already had their time in the spotlight, then they hosted the Detroit Red Wings in the Winter Classic in 2009. Bettman also said the Blackhawks would get an All-Star Game before the NHL Draft, another premier league-wide event held in a different city each June.

Fantasy Hockey Friday: NHL All-Star Fantasy Draft Recap

With a shortened Fantasy Hockey week thanks to the NHL All-Star Weekend, what better topic to discuss on Fantasy Hockey Friday than the NHL All-Star Fantasy Draft that took place last night?

The second annual NHL All-Star Fantasy Draft had a little bit of everything, from surprise picks to cheers and jeers from the home crowd in Ottawa, to rivalries that can’t yet be put aside and a first-hand look at players sitting back, enjoying themselves and the game they love.

The night started off with a great show of sportmanship by Daniel Alfredsson, the homewtown captain of the Ottawa Senators and one of the All-Star Game captains, when he yielded to Zdeno Chara, captain for the “visiting” team, and allowed him to call the toss of the puck because he is the defending Stanley Cup Champion. As it turned out, Chara called correctly and received the first overall pick with co-captain Joffrey Lupul by his side.

NHL All Star Draft Pavel Datsyuk Zdeno Chara

Zdeno Chara poses for pictures with Pavel Datsyuk, the #1 overall pick in the NHL All Star Draft

Most fans figured Evgeni Malkin, who currently leads the league in points, or Claude Giroux, a close second behind Malkin, would be taken first overall. Instead, Chara decided to go a different route and picked Pavel Datsyuk, a highly skilled puck handler and someone Chara thinks “plays the game the right way.” Datsyuk should have no problem setting up some of the goal scorers that Chara later picked, including Malkin, Gaborik, Kane, Hossa, Perry and Iginla.

Team bonds and friendships won out afterward as Alfredsson and his co-captain Henrik Lundqvist picked young defenseman Erik Karlsson, a teammate of Alfredsson’s in Ottawa. In the second round, Chara followed suite and grabbed Tim Thomas, his teammate in Boston, while Alfredsson picked Jason Spezza, another Ottawa teammate. With that pick, Spezza became $20 poorer when it was later revealed that he had bet Malkin $20 that Malkin would be picked before him.

By the end of the night, Chara had all of the Boston players while Alfredsson had all of the Ottawa Senators.

This year’s Mr. Irrelevant, the last picked player in the draft, came down to two young players who didn’t share ties with either of the captains or co-captains. Jamie Benn of the Dallas Stars and Logan Couture of the San Jose Sharks were the last two remaining on the stage with Chara left to pick his last player and determine who would become the last pick of the draft and this year’s Mr. Irrelevant – a spot that Phil Kessel of the Toronto Maple Leafs found himself in last season.

Again, Chara showed class on stage and picked Benn over Couture because, as Chara prefaced before the pick, Benn deserved to not be last after having emergency appendectomy surgery recently and still showed up to play this weekend. The All-Star Game on Sunday will be Benn’s first game back after the surgery in any capacity.

Don’t feel too bad for Couture, though. Being last picked in the NHL All-Star Fantasy Draft has its merits as Couture walked away with a free car.

Here are a few more thoughts and notes about the draft last night:

  • Turns out, some rivalries are a bit tougher to put aside than others. Daniel Sedin went to Team Alfredsson in the 9th round. Daniel’s brother Henrik sat on the board until Round 13, where he was also drafted by Team Alfredsson. Chara had several opportunities to split up the brothers but opted not to. Evidently Chara has a long memory and the Boston Bruins defenseman didn’t want anything to do with any of the Vancouver Cancucks players. The remaining Canuck, Alexander Edler, also went to Team Alfredsson.
  • The Ottawa Senators fans in attendance made their disdain for the Toronto Maple Leafs well know. Any time Joffrey Lupul attempted to make a selection for Team Chara, he was met with a loud chorus of boos and jeers. In fact, it actually got quite annoying to watch as a spectator as the jeers continued even into the late rounds of the draft. Lupul shrugged it off and acted like he didn’t mind, but at times he seemed annoyed with the fans in the crowd as well.
  • Another car for the last man picked? Come on NHL, these are guys that get stitched up in the locker room in between periods and then come back out on the ice to finish a game. I think they can handle being the last picked just fine without giving them a car to help soften the blow to their ego. I think a donation to the player’s favorite charity would be more than enough.
  • Please stop interviewing Phil Kessel. Really, just skip over him and don’t let him near a mic. His responses were just a lot of, “Oh, I don’t know,” and, “It doesn’t matter.” Tyler Seguin is on thin ice for similar responses as well.
  •  Best zing of the night goes to Jeremy Roenick for his Marian Gaborik comment after the draft was over. After being selected by Team Chara, Gaborik walked halfway across the stage toward Team Alfredsson’s side. This brought a round of laughter from the crowd and the players in attendance. Roenick later commented that “it’s a good thing New York signed Brad Richards so he can at least point Gaborik toward the right net.”
  • The NHL’s promotion of social media was very apparant last night – and it made for interesting commentary. Having the players live Tweet the event and then reading them on air was a really cool social media maneuver that offered inside access for fans. But the NHL needs to do one thing from here on out – get Alyonka Larionov in front of the camera whenever, wherever and as often as possible. Enough said.
  • Looking over each roster, I’ve gotta give the advantage to Team Chara. I think they assembled a team more geared toward offensive production and, let’s face it, the All-Star Game is all about offense. But Team Alfredsson edges out Team Chara in goaltending, so it will be interesting to see how it plays out on Sunday.

Ovechkin to Skip All-Star Game

Justin K. Aller/Getty Images

News is circulating that recently suspended Alex Ovechkin of the Washington Capitals is choosing to pass on this year’s All Star game in Ottawa, Ontario.

Washington Capitals’ General Manager George McPhee commented on the choice, saying, “He really doesn’t feel like he deserves to be there and doesn’t want to be a distraction. When he came in this morning, he said, ‘I’m a suspended player and I don’t deserve to be there.’”

The choice by Ovechkin will come under scrutiny, be it that he is somewhat protesting his suspension or that he truthfully feels that he is not deserving. It’s tough to argue that he is intentionally sticking it to the NHL for his suspension, but, the timing is not perfect. Still, being a fan favorite of most, he should get the benefit of the doubt that his decision is in earnest.

Fans will and should be disappointed in the decision. Ovechkin, although struggling this year in comparison to his normal pace, is still one of the elite athletes of the NHL. Not only is his skill one to be in awe of, his playful, love of the game will be missed in the skills competition.

Part of me feels this decision will be revoked. What are your thoughts?

All-Star Game Roster Analysis

With the rosters for the NHL All-Star Game set, let’s breakdown the players that will be competing in the annual talent showcase January 29 in Ottawa. Between the All-Star Game and 12 All-Star Skills Competition rookies, every team will be represented. For the second year, there will be a fantasy draft where selected captains will chose teams in a school-yard style draft. The draft will take place January 26 at 8:00 pm.

Hometown Love

There is a great crop of forwards in the game. As seen every year in the All-Star game, there will be a ton of goals scored and this will not disappoint. Leading the way are fan-vote leaders Jason Spezza, Milan Michalek, and Daniel Alfredsson. All three are from the host Senators and they rallied a lot of the fan vote mostly because they are having one of their best seasons in a very long time behind first-year bench boss Paul MacLean. Also representing the Sens on the blue like is Erik Karlsson.

Making his return to Ottawa is Marian Hossa of the Chicago Blackhawks. Hossa was drafted by the Senators and spent the first seven years of his career there. He was the 12th overall selection in the 1997 NHL Entry Draft and he still ranks sixth in all-time points and fifth in all-time points per game.

Leaders of the Pack

The usual statistical leaders are also playing, including goals leader Steven Stamkos. Those not far behind him are also playing and those include Phil Kessel and Marian Gaborik. Other notable statistical leaders include Daniel Sedin (assists), his twin Henrik (points), Jonathan Toews (face-off wins), and Jimmy Howard (goalie wins).

Original Six Representation

The top team in the East, the New York Rangers, have three players selected. In addition to Gaborik, defenseman Dan Girardi and goalie Henrik Lundqvist will participate in the game. Boston, who won the Stanley Cup last season, will send players at the same position as their Original Six partner in Tyler Seguin, Zdeno Chara and Tim Thomas. Segin also leads the league in +/- at +33.

In addition to already-mentioned Hossa, Towes and Howard, the Original Six was well represented with Patrick Kane, Pavel Datsyuk, Phil Kessel, Joffrey Lupul, and Carey Price.

I Call Captain

I have four projections as who could be captain. It’s simply a educated guess but I could see Spezza getting hometown love. And to keep them on separate teams for the second-time ever, I wouldn’t be surprised if one or both of the Sedin twins are named captains. If there were any other Canadians who could get selected, look for Toews.

Not Even Picked

The first two big snubs were legends who are in what could be their final seasons are players. Last year’s captain Nicklas Lidstrom is currently 14th in points and sixth in +\- among blue liners. You’d think it would be enough to get him in, but reports say he turned down the invitation to Ottawa so he can use the extra weekend of rest with his family. On the other hand, Teemu Selanne has 41 points on the season and leads the Ducks in assists and points. He could have been the victim of being on the second-worse team in the league.

Other snubs of note include Pekka Rinne and Craig Anderson. Both have 22 wins in goal, and as of Thursday night when the teams were selected joined Howard (25 wins) as the only goals with more than 20 wins.

Behind the Benches

The bench bosses for this game will be Boston’s Claude Julien and the duo of  John Tortorella of New York Rangers and San Jose’s Todd McLellan. The coaching spots are determined this year by the Stanley Cup winning coach and the top team that has the greatest points percentage in each conference. Julien will be joined by his usual assistants and team assignments are unknown, however it was determined by a coin flip last year.

The NHL All-Star Game’s All-Snubbed Team

Last week the participants for the NHL All-Star game in Raleigh was announced. Yesterday, the captains for the Fantasy Draft were announced. The NHL won’t announce or promote this, but someone had to do it: The All-Snubbed team. These are six players who had the stats and possible fan votes to earn a ticket to the showcase. It could have been factors such as the NHL’s Hockey Operations Department, numbers, or injuries that kept them out of the game. I’m doing to do this a little different. I won’t attach names at the beginning, but rather at the end of this article. Provided is information such as stats and you can decide which player should be in the game rather than looking at someones name.

Left Wing

I might get a lot of flack for this one because the dreadful team already has one All-Star participant. But Player A is seventh among left wingers in points. He has 14 goals and 23 assists so far this season. He is already at a career-high in points after 44 games (he earned 31 points in 71 games two seasons ago in Buffalo). He is three goals short of tying his career-best of 14 during that 2008-09 season. Don’t get me wrong, Player B is a good player. But he’s having a down season as everyone on his team is. He’s on pace to finish with a negative plus-minus rating for the first time since 1997, when he played 17 games in the NHL. He has 10 goals, 22 assists in 44 games this season. Numbers like that isn’t All-Star worthy for a player of his caliber.

Center

For a team that was in the public eye in the month of December, I’m surprised Player C couldn’t garner more fan votes to be able to play in the game. His team struggled during the key parts of December but they are catching their stride. He has 11 goals, 30 assists, and a +9 rating. His 30 assists place him seventh among Center’s and he’s respectful in the face-off circle as he’s won nearly 54 percent of draws. Player D is good when he’s on the ice, but he’s battled injuries throughout the season. He got voted a starter, but primarily because of his name and the team he plays on. He’s played in six less games than Player C, and has seven less points than Player C.

Right Wing

Player E is one of the old-timers of the game. He probably wanted to chose the extra weekend of rest to give him the energy to finish the rest of the season. He could also have been a numbers casualty because he has two teammates selected to the game as well as one selected to the rookie challenge. He has 14 goals, 27 assists this season, but his +/- could be better as it is currently at Even. He has better numbers than Player F, who played in five more games than Player E and has worse statistics. Player F does have a better +/- , as he sits at +14.

Defense

After comparing players for defensemen, I think the staff at the NHL simply put names on a dart board and whomever they hit, they picked for the All-Star game. Player G, not selected for the game, has 8 goals, 32 assists, and a +6 rating. His 40 points places him third among d-men, and he’s second in assist. Player H plays on a bad team, has a -16 rating and has less points than player G has assists. How is Player G not selected for the All-Star game? Hopefully if there is a injury this week he will be selected because it is a travesty if he doesn’t make it to Raleigh.

Goalie

My first reaction when I saw the lineup of goalies was “The East can’t be that much better than the West. Why the heck are there give goalies from the East and only Jonas Hiller from the West?” I’m not being picky and saying there has to be three from each conference, but having a second goalie from the West would make the game much more appealing and more balanced. My goalie whom I think was snubbed  is one you might not think initially. It’s not the guy from my hometown team, despite Jimmy Howard having 23 wins, his GAA is 2.9 and his save percentage is a shade north of .900. The goalie whom I think was snubbed is a two-time All-Star, one of the best at his position, has a 21-8-6 record while leading his team to one of the top records in the league. He may stumble in the playoffs, but he gets it done in the regular season. It could be possible he declined a spot in the game as his wife just gave birth to their second child in December and wants to spend time with them before going back on the road with his team.

In comparison, Player J carries a 20-14-5 record. He has a 2.67 GAA and could have been selected to the All-Star game because of the team he plays on. Not to mention statistically he’s the weakest East goalie chosen for the game.

Snubbed and Replaceable Players Revealed

Player A Snubbed- Clarke MacArthur (LW, TOR)

Player B Replaceable- Patrik Elias (LW, NJD)

Player C Snubbed- Nicklas Backstrom (C, WAS)

Player D Replaceable- Evgeni Malkin (C, PIT)

Player E Snubbed- Teemu Selanne (RW, ANA)

Player F Replaceable- David Backes (RW, STL)

Player G Snubbed- Lubomir Visnovsky (D, ANA)

Player H Replaceable- Erik Karlsson (D, OTT)

Player I Snubbed- Roberto Lulongo (G, VAN)

Lidstrom, Staal named All-Star Game captains

Forget East vs. West or North America vs the World. Instead, this year’s NHL All-Star Game will be Team Lidstrom vs Team Staal.

Veteran defenseman Nicklas Lidstrom and superstar forward Eric Staal were named team captains for this year’s annual All-Star Game which will take place on Jan. 30 in Raleigh, North Carolina.

As team captains, Lidstrom and Staal will be responsible for hand picking their own teams in a fantasy hockey-style draft format. Both captains will also select the lineup for their team in the All-Star Skills Challenge event. Team captains were selected through a vote by the pool of All-Star players attending this year’s event.

While there was heavy speculation as to who would captain the two teams at the game this year, Staal received a lot of fan fare since the game will be held at the home arena of the Carolina Hurricane, a team that Staal has spent his entire NHL career with.

“I think that was probably a part of it, of me being a captain here,” Staal said. “It’s in our building in front of our fans so i think it adds a little bit more to the game and it will be exciting for our building to enjoy that and cheer for the home team, for the good guys.”

Staal, however, said he feels no pressure whatsoever to select his brother, New York Rangers defenseman Marc Staal, in the All-Star draft. Marc will be appearing in his first NHL All Star Game this season.

Lidstrom, who also captains the Detroit Red Wings, appears to be an obvious choice. At 40-years-old, Lidstrom is still at the top of his game and leads all defenseman in points with 42 on the season and still averages almost 24 minutes of ice time a night. Lidstrom will be appearing in his 12th NHL All Star Game.

“I had a chance to talk to (Detroit GM) Ken Holland this morning, try to get some pointers from him. He’s a good guy to ask questions,” Lidstrom said about his draft strategy. “I don’t think you can go wrong with any of the players. They’re all great players, their all All-Stars.”

Pittsburgh Penguins captain Sidney Crosby was thought to be a shoe-in to captain one of the teams this year, but a concussion has sidelined the league’s leading point scorer and may force him to miss the All Star game altogether. Crosby amassed the most fan votes this year with 635,509 total votes. Penguins defenseman Kris Letang had the second-most total votes with 477,960.

If Crosby misses this year’s game, it will be the third time that he has missed an All-Star game due to injury.

The All-Star fantasy draft will be televised on Friday, Jan. 28. Lidstrom and Staal, joined by their alternate captains who will be named later, will choose from a pool of the remaining 36 All Star players over the course of an 18 round draft. Each team will consist of three goalies, six defensemen and 12 forwards total. To ensure that the final draft picks are true selections and not simply predetermined due to position requirements, each team’s three goalies must be picked by the end of Round 10 and each team’s six defensemen must be picked by the conclusion of Round 15.
