Hockey World Blog Season Previews 2010 – New York Rangers

Key Offseason Losses: Alex Auld, Olli Jokinen, Corey Potter, Jodi Shelley

Key Offseason Additions: Alexander Frolov, Martin Biron, Todd White, Derek Boogaard, Tim Kennedy

Last Season Ranking: 9th in East

Offense:

The New York Rangers lost out on a postseason bid last year in the final game of the regular season. This year the team hopes to turn it all around and lock in a postseason appearance well before the end of the season with some key offseason additions.

Much of the team’s success will again depend on the health of Marian Gaborik. With 42 goals last season for 86 points in 76 games, Gaborik was a stud for the Rangers, but questions about his health continue to linger as Gaborik has had several injury-shortened seasons in his brief NHL career. Vinny Prospal, the team’s second highest scorer last season, will return for his second year with the Rangers. With 58 points last year, Prospal quietly puts together solid campaigns and will be expected to continue contributing on the top two lines. Recent trade acquisition Todd White will fight for a spot as a top-six forward and could be a great fit centering Gaborik on the first line. White is capable of anywhere between 50 and 70 points and will bring offensive depth and a veteran presence to the lineup.

*Dec 14 - 00:05*Alexander Frolov may be the biggest name coming to the Big Apple this season. Frolov showed flashes of brilliance in Los Angeles but never really became a huge impact player. Frolov is capable of producing 70 or more points if he can work hard and keep his attitude in check.

The team will also look for center Brandon Dubinski to keep taking steps forward and become a huge part of the team’s offense. Young players like Tim Kennedy, Erik Christensen and Artem Anisimov will certainly get their chance to contribute as secondary scorers as well.

Defense:

Marc Staal is considered by many to be the prolific defenseman of the organization but remains unsigned by the team. Assuming that Staal comes back, the Rangers will look for him to continue to lead the way on the blue line for the blue shirts. But at plus-11 last season, Staal had the best plus/minus of any New York defenseman while Michael Del Zotto had a team-worst minus-20. Still, Del Zotto tallied 37 points in 80 games last season. If he can be better in his own zone, Del Zotto could be a difference maker for the Rangers this year. Michael Rozsival is also capable of being much better than the 23 points and plus-3 he exhibited last year. The Rangers definitely need to play better defense this season if they intend to compete.

Goaltending:

Henrik Lundquist was a workhorse last season for the Rangers where he played in 73 games, tallied 35 wins and had a 2.38 goals against average. In fact, Lundquist has started in 70 or more games in each of his past four NHL seasons and has never had a goals against average higher than 2.43. However, now that the team has a suitable backup goaltender in Martin Biron, expect Lundquist to work less – possibly in the range of 55-60 starts, but still exhibit the same level of top-notch play.

Season Outlook:

The Rangers made some good additions in the offseason and certainly added some depth on offense, but a lot of their success hinges on health and attitude. If Gaborik can stay healthy and if Frolov can ditch his prima donna attitude then the Rangers could really make some big strides this season. Todd White is a very versatile player and could turn a lot of heads if he gets time on the top line with Gaborik. Lundquist is constantly a stud in net for the Rangers but adding Biron into the mix will help keep Lundquist fresh and healthy for the postseason. But as a whole, the Rangers need to play much better defense this year in order to stay competitive in the East. A playoff spot isn’t out of the picture, but it’s a long season and there are still a lot of “ifs” for the Rangers this season.

Datsyuk Returns, Tavares Shootout Glory and Frolov to be Traded?

Pavel Datsyuk will join Henrik Zetterberg and the Red Wings tonight

Pavel Datsyuk will join Henrik Zetterberg and the Red Wings tonight

The Detroit Free Press has been reporting the Pavel Datsyuk will be returning to the lineup tonight in Phoenix. It looks as though Pav will be playing alongside a couple familiar faces, Henrik Zetterberg and Tomas Holmstrom. Re-uniting this line should be great for fantasy owners who carry any of these players on their squad. When together, Homer and the Eurotwins have been known to put up prolific numbers. Detroit could use some of that scoring tonight against a Phoenix team that has been great to start the season and carries a strong netminder in Ilya Bryzgalov.

Jonathan Tavares didn’t really have an outstanding game against the Islanders last night, but came up big when it counted. Tavares’ goal in the shootout gave the New York Islanders their first win of the season. His goal was a pretty one too. Check out the video of the entire shootout.

It looks like Alexander Frolov will soon be on his way out of Los Angeles. According to a great article on BleacherReport, Kings coach Terry Murray has had 10 meetings with Frolov regarding his poor play this season. The rest of the article details a few potential destinations for Frolov if the Kings trade the winger. Fantasy owners keep an eye out, if Frolov gets dealt, he might be able to regain his scoring touch playing on a better line.

Saturday, October 24th, will mark the second time this season that all 30 NHL teams play. The first “Face-Off Saturday” as it has been called, took place on October 3rd. I’m a little disappointed, however, that the earliest game starts at 7pm. A couple afternoon games would have made this Face-Off Saturday much more delightful. Either way, we will be on Twitter Saturday night doing some live tweeting of whatever games we choose to watch. Follow along if you can, it will be a great night.

Los Angeles Kings

Anze Kopitar should rebound to lead the Kings with a career year in 2009-10

Anze Kopitar should rebound to lead the Kings with a career year in 2009-10

Let’s face it, the Los Angeles kings have been one of the NHL’s worst teams in the post lockout era. They’ve struggled a lot, posting only one winning season since that time. It’s easy to say that the Kings are in the midst of a rebuilding effort, but when will fans in LA see some results?

Slowly, but surely, the pieces to the puzzle are being put in place. Last season, rookie Drew Doughty was a stud defensively, playing roughly 20 minutes per game and posting 6 goals and 21 assists. Great numbers for a rookie D-man in LA and his minus 17 rating will surely improve as he gets more experience under his belt. Jack Johnson, another young defenseman, is hoping to put together a healthy season after missing 41 games last year due to injury.  Both young men are big bodies who can hit well and block shots. Doughty measures in at 6-1 and 219lbs while Johnson, who signed a new two year contract over the summer, is steady at 6-1 and 225lbs.

Alongside the young guns, the Kings signed Rob Scuderi to a four year deal to add some depth to the defense. Scuderi, who had spent his entire career with the Penguins, and won a Stanley Cup last season, will certainly provide some veteran leadership on the blue line and in the locker room as well. His “been there before” attitude will be the perfect addition to a growing squad.

Offensively, the Kings feature a gifted top line of Dustin Brown, Anze Kopitar and Alexander Frolov. While all three are tremendous athletes, they collectively slumped in 2008-09, each posting a dip in points from the previous year. Kopitar looks to have the most potential of the group, providing 32 goals and 45 assists in 07-08. Opposing defenses better watch out for him this year, as he really has something to prove. A 100 point campaign is certainly not out of the question for a guy like Anze.

Newcomers Ryan Smyth and Justin Williams will provide some great scoring depth for the Kings. Williams is also looking for his first healthy season in a while. His last full season was 2006-07 with the Hurricanes where he contributed 33 goals and 34 assists. Smyth, acquired via trade, will provide a big body in front of the net and should be able to chip in around 30 goals and 30 assists throughout the season.

The biggest question mark on the Kings roster is in the goaltender position. Will Jon Quick hold on to his starting spot, or will Erik Ersberg take over? Quick posted a winning record last season while recording a .914 save percentage and 2.48 goals against average. He added four shutouts to his resume as well.

The Los Angeles Kings are set to make big strides this season. Whether they can play up to their potential is yet to be seen. Expect an improvement over last seasons record, however, with a winning season in LA.
