A long night of hockey last night as the New York Rangers and the Washington Capitals went into triple overtime. The triple overtime was the first of the 2012 playoffs. Good up and down action, but unfortunately someone had to lose. Rangers’ Marian Gaborik, who has been silent for most of the playoffs, netted the game winner. It is his second of the playoffs.

The Nashville Predators hosted the Phoenix Coyotes in their third game in the Country music capital. The Predators bounced back after losing the first two games in Phoenix with a score of 2 – 0. Both goals came in the first while the two remaining periods were a fast paced chess battle. Goalie Pekka Rinne made 32 shots for his first career playoff shut-out.

Going into the third with a one goal lead you might think your chances of winning are better than average. That is of course never the case, especially in a crazy NHL playoffs. The Philadelphia Flyers were up 1 – 0 entering the third and was quickly introduced to the New Jersey Devil’s onslaught.

Rookie defensman Adam Larsson who played 65 games in the regular season, played his first NHL career playoff game. Just over 3 minutes into the final period, Larsson made it a memorable game by putting a wrist shot goal past Ilya Bryzgalov. The Devils continued to rally as they ended up scoring 3 more goals to win game two with a 4 – 1 finish.

That win also came with missing Superstar Ilya Kovalchuk. Maybe Devil’s Head Coach Peter DeBoer might take a play out of Washington Capitals Head Coach Dale Hunter and limit Kovalchuk’s minutes when he returns like Hunter limiting Alexander Ovechkin’s minutes.

The series is tied at one a piece, now heading to New Jersey for games 3 & 4.

Just when you thought it was safe to go back into the water…

The second round seems as unpredictable as the first. Last night’s games were every bit exciting, one series tied, another a prominent lead.

The Washington Capitals have been the center of attention lately with the fact that they made the playoffs, beat the Boston Bruins to advance to the second round, and perhaps even more of a shocker, Alexander Ovechkin is seeing less and less minutes. Head Coach Dale Hunter is on to something though, as despite Ovechkin only playing 13:36 minutes of ice-time last night, Ovechkin scored the game-winning power-play goal. We may find out later that Ovechkin is playing hurt or perhaps Hunter has created some sort of new style of play, but for now, we watch and wonder how long these Caps can keep winning.

Going from one crazy game to another, the score was 4 – 0 after the first period. The team in the lead was the 8th seeded Los Angeles Kings while the team losing is the 2nd seeded St. Louis Blues. The Kings took out the 1st seeded Vancouver Canucks and are back home awaiting home ice advantage for games three and four. Blues’ Head Coach Ken Hitchcock is quickly going from hero to zero in the eyes of Blues’ fans everywhere. Final score was 5 – 2.

The second round is underway with all teams playing at least once. The Los Angeles Kings caught the favorite St. Louis Blues off-guard and took the first one in St. Louis. The Blue Shirts, New York Rangers, are playing their 1st seed overall part by going up 1 – 0 in the series with the Washington Capitals. Philadelphia Flyers barely got by, needing overtime, to win against the New Jersey Devils. The only two teams to have played two games so far, the Phoenix Coyotes and the Nashville Predators, home ice advantage for the Coyotes have worked as they lead the series 2 – 0.

Plenty of more games to come, no team is out of it yet, let’s hope for continuing good playoff action.

Two good game sevens last night as the New York Rangers defeated the Ottawa Senators and the New Jersey Devils upset the Florida Panthers.

It seemed that the Rangers were too much for the Senators, controlling the majority of the game. There were moments the Senators looked like they were going to turn it on, but Henrik Lundqvist of the Rangers made 26 saves for another stellar performance. Senators’ goalie Craig Anderson played extremely well also, but we were not sure if he was going to shake after the game as he left the ice and eventually came back.

If you happened to watch the Devils and Panthers you watched one heck of some overtime action. Great up and down action with surprisingly no lack of energy and very few mental/ fatigue mistakes. The Devils ended up putting in a shot and the rats hit the ice. This game, perhaps more than most, you really did not want a loser.

Round two starts tonight with the Phoenix Coyotes hosting the Nashville Predators at 9 PM EST.

Another team wins as another team loses, and once again, another unforeseen powerhouse knocked out. The defending Stanley Cup Champions Boston Bruins fell to the hard work of the Washington Capitals. After going three periods with a 1-1 tie, the team took it into overtime. The difference between the NHL and any other league is how a turnover can kill you. Trying to dump the puck in at center ice, the puck bounced back for a two on one. Mike Knuble of the Capitals took a shot and Joel Ward cleaned it up for the game winning goal.

Credit has to be given to Tim Thomas who played phenomenal throughout the series. Unfortunately for him, his team could not score. Equal, if not more credit, goes to Washington Capitals goalie Braden Holtby. Playing only 7 games in the regular season as his time was spent with the Capitals minor team the Hershey Bears, Holtby has a 2.00 goals against average and a .940 save percentage for this year’s playoffs. When people talk about the X-factor, Holtby is a prime example.

You start to winder if Head Coach Dale Hunter is working his magic. Alexander Ovechkin is playing his lowest minutes in the playoffs, the team is shutting down the middle of the ice, and they are winning.

The New Jersey Devils extended their series after a 3-2 overtime win last night against the Florida Panthers. Travis Zajac scored a low right hand side goal to take their series to 7 games. Speaking of 7 games, two other Eastern Conference match-ups will also need a seventh game to decide the winner. Tonight, the Washington Capitals visit the Boston Bruins to decide the winner there. Tomorrow night the Devils and Panthers play again as well as the New York Rangers host the Ottawa Senators.

Three games left for the first round, who do you think will come out on top?

Mike Smith made 39 saves to blank the Chicago Blackhawks, sending them golfing while the Phoenix Coyotes continue on. The final score was 4-0 as the Coyotes put an exclamation mark on the series. Phoenix is now set to play against the Nashville Predators in the next round.

That wraps up the rest of the Western Conference first round games. In HWB’s Playoff Challenge, only two people have correctly picked the Western Conference. One being yours truly, the other being Mitch V. The Eastern Conference will wrap up at latest, by Thursday night.

The New Jersey Devils tied their series between the Florida Panthers after winning 4-0. The win was a milestone as netminder Martin Brodeur recorded his 24th Stanley Cup Playoff shutout. Brodeur made 26 saves on the night, some unbelievable. He now holds the record by himself, surpassing Patrick Roy.

In other games, the Washington Capitals tied their series between the Boston Bruins at two a piece. Another low scoring game of a 2-1 final with Alexander Semin picking up the game winner.

The Phoenix Coyotes and Chicago Blackhawks reached another overtime, and again, Mikkel Boedker of the Coyotes scored another weak goal on Corey Crawford of the Blackhawks. Credit to Boedker for going to the net and working hard, but Crawford was weak on the last two overtime goals. You kind of feel bad for him as he knows it and everyone else knows that he should of made the save.

And lastly, the St. Louis Blues have taken a 3-1 series lead against the San Jose Sharks after a 2-1 win last night. It seems almost over for the Sharks who will travel to St. Louis on Saturday to play.

Things keep getting uglier as last night, Raffi Torres of the Phoenix Coyotes, left his feet and targeted the head of Marian Hossa in a horrible display of judgment by Torres. The hit resulted in Hossa to be carted off on a stretcher. Hossa has left the hospital since, but no timetable for his return has been declared.

Expect league disciplinarian Brendan Shanahan to suspend Torres for the hit, most likely more than 5 games because of his repeat offender status. This week alone the league has issued 7 suspensions, that of which has totaled last year’s entire playoff suspension count. Well, those numbers will be beat with the addition of Torres. Hopefully the players can get back to solid hockey and refrain from any dangerous or unneeded antics.

Furthering the salt-in-the-wound of the Blackhawks, the Coyotes edged out a victory in overtime to take the series lead 2-1.
