Rick Nash Watch 2012 was temporarily put on hold as the focused shifted to Columbus Blue Jacket teammate Jeff Carter. Carter, who has been slowly picking up steam since returning from injury, put up a hat-trick against the Pacific Division leaders San Jose Sharks. The Blue Jackets have had a lackluster year, now prompting the trade of their superstar and previously considered franchise player Rick Nash. Now his name appears everywhere for potential trades before the upcoming trade deadline on Monday, February 27. Honorable mention in last night’s game goes out to Vinny Prospel of the blue Jackets who also had a 3 point night; 3 assists. If last night was an indicator of the team’s potential, (Nash, Carter and Prospel) does Columbus rescind their trade possibilities of Nash and Carter?

Justin Peters and the Carolina Hurricanes routed the Washington Capitals in a 5 – 0 victory last night. Peters, who has started only 20 games over 3 years, only 4 this year, notched his first NHL career shutout. Sure, 17 shots faced does not seem like a lot, it really is not, but it is tougher for most goalies when they have to keep their focus for so long without much action. Still in last place within the Eastern Conference and no hopes of making the playoffs, the Carolina Hurricanes are spoilers and look to ruin the hopes of other teams; misery loves company.

A lot of stuff happened over the weekend, including a big payday for James Neal of the Pittsburgh Penguins. Neal, who has 30 goals and 57 points on the season, agreed to a six-year, $30 million extension. Neal has continued to be a solid goal scorer for the Penguins, all in the absence of his supposed-to-be line-mate Sidney Crosby. Crosby is rumored to return sooner-than-later; Neal fantasy owne hope this rumor is true.

The Chicago Blackhawks are back in business after defeating the number one Eastern Conference New York Rangers. Chi-town went up by 4 – 0 in the first period and held onto a 4 – 2 victory. On the bright side, Chicago won a game. On the downside, Chicago came out on fire scoring, but was not capable of putting the puck in the nest for the remaining 40 minutes. Will they fall back into a losing streak or will they use this victory as a launchpad for more?

It may not be the prettiest of pictures for Assistant Captain Jason Spezza of the Ottawa Senators but the man has been on fire. In his last 5 games he has a total of 5 goals and 13 points with a plus 3 rating. Last night against the Senators whooping on the Florida Panthers, Spezza had 3 assists. Fantasy fans are surely enjoying this streak for as long as it will last.

The Detroit Red Wings defeated the Dallas Stars in a 3 – 1 win to make history; the Red Wings have set a record of the most consecutive home games won. The record now stands at 21, beating that of the Boston Bruins (1929-1930) and the Philadelphia Flyers (1976).
The record looks to be extended Friday night against tough competitors the Nashville Predators.
After breaking the record, hockey fans will need to worry about Red Wings having home ice in the playoffs. Detroit may not need to worry about being the best in the league, but definitely need to worry about being the best in the Western Conference. Expect the Wings to continue their fight as if they are out of the playoffs.

The third place Western Conference San Jose Sharks reminded the Washington Capitals last night that there is a tough road a head of them if they want to make the playoffs.
The Sharks have had yet another good season so far. A core of players with Jumbo Joe Thronton, Patrick Marleau and young Logan Couture. Oh, and there is a guy by the name of Joe Pavelski, pictured above, who tends to help out as well. Pavelski had a 4 point night with 2 goals and 2 assist. He must like the number 2 and 4 as to date, Pavelski has 22 goals, 22 assists for 44 points.
The Sharks next big matchup will come Sunday night against the top of the league Detroit Red Wings. The Wings could still be setting a record for most consecutive home wins. The two teams seem to always play each other tough so expect a playoff like atmosphere.
On a different note, Happy Valentines Day to all our readers.

There were some stellar performance from players over the weekend but it is hard not to bring focus to the Detroit Red Wings for winning their 20th consecutive home game to tie the NHL record. It has been more than 3 months since the Wings have lost at the Joe as they join the 1929-30 Boston Bruins and 1975-76 Flyers as the only NHL clubs to ever string together this many victories on home ice in one season. Absolutely amazing, and somewhat ironic, as the win came in a 4-3 victory over the Philadelphia Flyers.
The Wings will try and set a new NHL record tomorrow night against the Dallas Stars. Many feel the record will be broken, but only to lose Friday night against the Nashville Predators, a team that seems to always have Detroit’s number. However, number one netminder Jimmy Howard, who is injured with a broken index finger, looks to return Friday night against the Predators. If the Wings win against the Stars tomorrow night expect the media to be buzzing about Friday’s match-up.

David Perron of the St. Louis Blues sports his new White Reebok 20k Skates against the New Jersey Devils. Perron scored a goal in the second period that helped the Blues win in a 4-3 shootout victory. Must be the combination of new skates and the Reebok Ai9 hockey stick.
The Blues have been a success under Head Coach Ken Hitchcock. Currently 4th within the Western Conference with 71 points, that’s only 2 points out of the Eastern Conference lead by the New York Rangers, the team is not only sitting good for playoffs, but is looking really intimidating. Both netminders, Brian Elliott and Jaroslav Halak are 1st and 6th best in terms of goals against average. Also, Andy McDonald, Alex Steen and Matt D’agostini are currently injured, who combined for 61 goals and 86 assists for a total of 147 points last season.
Blues fans should be excited for playoffs this year, especially if the team is all healthy.

Hockey players have long memories and definitely have a good enough memory to recall when Buffalo Sabres netminder Ryan Miller was plowed over by Boston Bruins Milan Lucic earlier in the year, sparking a media frenzy over the cowardliness of the Sabres. It seems the Sabres were doing good record wise before that point, but have fallen down to near bottom of the Eastern Conference. Perhaps all that media attention was too much.
Last night saw the Bruins at the Sabres. Sabres Head Coach Lindy Ruff was not behind the bench after breaking a rib earlier in the week to a freak accident in practice. Sabres fans were worried.
Have no fear for Ryan Miller and the Sabres stepped up their game, nearly unrecognizable to the Sabres of late, but more to the Sabres that were expected to play this year. The final score, 6-0 in favor of the Sabres. Miller was solid, Tyler Ennis, Ville Leino, Jason Pominville and Andrej Sekera all had two point nights, and Lucic of the Bruins had a target on him all night long.
The two teams went back to old-time hockey; three fights and four 10-minute game misconducts assessed. It’s good to know the Sabres still have some fight left in them and that playoff hockey is around the corner.
