Ovechkin to Skip All-Star Game

Justin K. Aller/Getty Images

News is circulating that recently suspended Alex Ovechkin of the Washington Capitals is choosing to pass on this year’s All Star game in Ottawa, Ontario.

Washington Capitals’ General Manager George McPhee commented on the choice, saying, “He really doesn’t feel like he deserves to be there and doesn’t want to be a distraction. When he came in this morning, he said, ‘I’m a suspended player and I don’t deserve to be there.’”

The choice by Ovechkin will come under scrutiny, be it that he is somewhat protesting his suspension or that he truthfully feels that he is not deserving. It’s tough to argue that he is intentionally sticking it to the NHL for his suspension, but, the timing is not perfect. Still, being a fan favorite of most, he should get the benefit of the doubt that his decision is in earnest.

Fans will and should be disappointed in the decision. Ovechkin, although struggling this year in comparison to his normal pace, is still one of the elite athletes of the NHL. Not only is his skill one to be in awe of, his playful, love of the game will be missed in the skills competition.

Part of me feels this decision will be revoked. What are your thoughts?

Patrik Berglund of the St. Louis Blues takes a shot which is stopped by Detroit Red Wings’ netminder Jimmy Howard. Howard had 21 saves of the night, allowing only 1 goal in as the Wings beat the Blues by a 3 – 1 score. Must of been those Vaughn pads.

The game had a playoff like atmosphere, and rightfully so. The two teams are some of the top teams in the Western Conference; the Wings currently in 1st place while the Blues in 4th.

The win is the Red Wings’ 17th straight home win—the NHL’s longest single-season streak in 36 years.

Bobby Ryan of the Anaheim Ducks celebrates a goal against the Colorado Avalanche. Ryan, who has been the topic of trade rumors, scored two goals on the night and has 10 points in 10 games played in the month of February.

The Anaheim Ducks are currently on the outside looking in for a playoff spot being in 13th place in the Western Conference. Winning five in a row under new Head Coach Bruce Boudreau, the team is starting to click and where it leads them no one will know. If you are a Ducks fan, the remainder of the season is going to be a fun one to watch. My hunch, they end in 9th spot and less than 4 points out, with the last couple games either making or breaking their playoff hopes.

NHL Announces Skills Competition Events

The most exciting part of the NHL All-Star weekend isn’t the game itself. It’s Saturday night where the skills competition takes place. Besides the playoffs and the Olympic tournament, it is perhaps the third-most thing I look forward to in the hockey world. Team Alfredsson and Team Chara will compete against each other for points in various events. The league announced the events that will take place January 28 in Ottawa, and here’s a rundown of what will take place.

Bridgestone NHL Fastest Skater

Five players from each team compete, four All-Star skaters and one rookie. The fastest skater will consist of five preliminary races, with the player posting the fastest time from each team meeting in one final match race. New addition this year: one skater from each team is positioned side-by-side on the start line. Both skaters race toward the same end zone, both turn outward, skate to the opposite end zone, turn back and skate past center ice to the finish line. Please NHL, spare us having to watch goalies in the fastest skater. It’s like watching a fat lineman run the 40-yard dash. It’s never a pretty sight.

Six team points are available — one each to the winner of the six individual races.

Allstate Insurance NHL Breakaway Challenge

This event has belonged Alex Ovechkin has made this event his own, winning the title in each of its first three years. Similar to the NBA Slam Dunk contest, three shooters (one rookie, two All-Stars) and one goaltender from each team will participate. Each skater will attempt three shots — with no limits. Shooters can start their attempt from anywhere with full access to the offensive zone, including behind the net. NHL penalty shot rules do not apply. Fans inside Scotiabank Place and those watching on television in Canada and the United States will be able to vote for their favorite player by texting the number that corresponds to the player of their choice to 81812. The shooter with the highest fan vote will score one point for his team.

It’ll be interesting to see what players come up with, considering what Vladimir Tarasenko did in the KHL shootout Friday night (video below).

Canadian Tire NHL Accuracy Shooting

Four players from each team (one rookie, three All-Stars) will participate, with four additional All-Stars from each team serving as passers. From 25 feet in front of the net, a shooter will take aim at four foam targets attached to the inner side of the goal posts, one target in each corner. The objective is to hit all targets in the fastest time. The player with the fastest time from each team will go head-to-head in the final round for the title of the NHL’s most accurate shooter. Five team points are available, one to the winner of each individual matchup. If you remember last year, Daniel Sedin went 4-4 in the span of time it takes a person to wash their hands.

Gatorade G Series NHL Skills Challenge Relay

Introduced to acclaim in 2011, this event will feature 16 players from each team (two rookies, 14 All-Stars) and showcase a host of skills that include the “one-timer,” passing, puck control, stickhandling and accuracy shooting. In the “one-timer” event, three shooters (with the assistance of one passer) must score three goals over an eight-inch barrier; in the passing event, one passer must complete a pass into each of six nets placed around the rink; in the puck control event, one skater will skate through a series of cones while keeping possession of the puck; in the stickhandling event, one skater will control the puck through a series of obstacles.

Rounding out the relay is the accuracy shooting event, where one player will take aim at four targets. Two groups from each team will go through the relay — one from each team in a pair of heats. Each skill must be completed before moving on to the next skill in this timed relay event worth a total of three points. The fastest team in each heat will earn one point and the team with the fastest combined time will earn one bonus point.

BlackBerry NHL Hardest Shot

Just like Ovechkin has owned the Breakway Challenge, Boston’s Zdeno Chara has owned the Hardest Shot. It’s sorta unfair that he’s the tallest player in the league at 6-9, meaning he can generate a lot of torque and flex on his stick leading to a harder, faster shot. Chara not only won his fourth consecutive NHL Hardest Shot competition in 2011, but his blast of 105.9 mph broke the all-time record of 105.4 he set in 2009. Four players from each team (one rookie, three All-Stars) will compete in five head-to-head matchups. One contestant from each team will square off in each round, valued at one point each. The highest recorded shot (by radar in mph) of two attempts will be scored. The player from each team with the hardest single shot will meet in a final match to determine the NHL’s hardest shooter. Five team points are available — one to the winner of each of the four preliminary matchups and one to the winner of the finale.

Tim Hortons NHL Elimination Shootout

The second-largest event in terms of participants from each side, the battle between Team Alfredsson and Team Chara will be decided in this competition, when 15 participants from each side (one rookie, 11 All-Stars, three goaltenders), compete in a time-honored game of “hockey survivor.” Shooters who score will move on to the next round in the shootout, with the All-Star goaltenders rotating after every third shooter. The event will continue until one player scores and the other(s) do not in a single round — last goal wins. Every goal scored will count as one point for the goal-scorer’s team.

Toronto Maple Leaf’s Joffrey Lupul carries the puck last night against the Minnesota Wild. Toronto took down the Wild by a score of 4 – 1. Both teams have had unexpected success this year. The Wild jumped out in front early but has seen a slow and painful fall as of late, currently sitting in 9th place. Toronto has followed the same path, currently in 9th place in the Eastern Conference.

Lupul currently leads the Maple Leafs with 51 points, a combination of 20 goals and 31 assists. His career high is only 2 points away. Last night alone he had 3 assists. Rocking the Reebok swag and Easton stick, Lupul is going to break his career high point total and possibly help take the Maple Leafs to the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

Chicago Blackhawks 20 year-old rookie Andrew Shaw celebrates after scoring on Buffalo Sabres goaltender Jhonas Enroth. Shaw was brought in to replace injured and suspended Daniel Carcillo. The young forward has played on all 4 lines since joining the team, scoring 5 goals and 1 helper for 6 points in his only 8 games played. It is unknown if he will play with the team for the remainder of the season as Carcillo wilnot return this year, but if you’re fantasy team is looking for some depth and you have a spot to mess with, Shaw may be worth picking up.

Carolina Hurricanes’ Jeff Skinner Returns

AP Photo/Richard Lipski

Carolina Hurricanes’ fans gave a collective sigh of relief last night as young forward Jeff Skinner has returned. Skinner, who has missed 16 games, was out because of a concussion.

The NHL continues its ongoing effort to curb head-shots, ultimately trying to remove concussions from the game. The charge to change the game for the better began last season as superstar Sidney Crosby of the Pittsburgh Penguins suffered a concussion, sidelining him for the last quarter of last season and out for the majority of this season.

Skinner’s return was a positive boost to the lineup of the Hurricanes as he continued where he left off. Playing two games so far, Skinner averaged 17:39 of ice time and picked up an assist in his second game. In time he will jump back up to his nearly 19 minutes a game norm.

Although Skinner’s return is a positive for the Hurricanes, the harsh reality is the team is in last place of the Eastern Conference. Last season the Hurricanes fell two points short of 8th place for the playoffs. This season the team will not make the playoffs even if a miracle happens. Very sad considering the team has such talent in Captain Eric Staal, Jussi Jokinen, Jeff Skinner, Joni Pitkanen and netminder Cam Ward. Major overhaul is in store for the team in the off-season, maybe even come trade deadline. From a fantasy perspective though, Skinner will still put up points to help out your team.

Taylor Hall Cut By Teammate’s Skate in Warmups

Taylor Hall, who has points in all but one games played in the new year, was forced to sit out last night’s game against the Columbus Blue Jackets after receiving a serious cut above his left eye during warm ups. In what can be described as nothing more than a freak accident, Hall stepped on a puck and lost his footing during warm ups and slid into Ladislav Smid, taking out his feet. Smid and Hall both crashed into the boards as teammate Corey Potter was swinging around. Potter attempted to leap over the crashing duo, but only caused more damage as his skate hit the head of Hall. Fortunately, Corey Potter managed to not hit Hall directly in the eye during the accident. The cut was severe enough, however, as Hall required 30 stitches to close the wound.

“This is one of those fluky things. It just happens, not much we can do about it.” Oilers head coach Tom Renney said of the injury to Hall.

An incident such as this, however rare and fluky it may be, should bring up the question of whether or not players should be required to wear helmets during warmups. Hall, who typically wears additional facial protection with a shield, could have walked away from this incident unharmed had he been wearing his typical game set-up. Instead, he was forced to be scratched from the game against Columbus which they eventually lost. Edmonton plays again tomorrow in St. Louis, and only time will tell if Hall will be ready to go. If not, a situation which could have been avoided with a helmet and shield leads to more missed games from star players and additional frustration for Oilers fans.

Check out the video of the incident below and sound off in the comments. Do you think this whole problem could have been avoided in any way?

Here’s a nice photo of the aftermath – Taylor Hall with 30 stitches on his forehead after being cut.

Buffalo Sabres trade talks increase while team struggles

The Buffalo Sabres appear to be in a state of disarray after an embarrassing loss to the Detroit Red Wings Monday night in which they let up five goals in the first two periods, prompting head coach Lindy Ruff to pull netminder Ryan Miller, and at times looked displaced and heartless.

Several players sounded off about the loss, including Miller, who is a native of Michigan and played in front of family and friends last night.

“It’s embarrassing,” said Miller, whose brother Drew plays for the Red Wings. “I got family and friends here. Everybody came to watch Drew and I play. At least they got to watch Drew perform.”

Buffalo captain Jason Pominville also commented on the loss stating, “The injury excuse isn’t what this team is about. We have enough guys in the lineup to win games and we’re not doing it right now. We have to find a way.”

The Sabres currently sit 11th overall in the Eastern Conference – seven points out of a playoff spot. Injuries have hampered the team, but key offseason additions have failed to live up to expectations as well. Ville Leino, who scored 54 points last season, including 19 goals, only has 10 points so far with three goals. These numbers are far from what the team expected when they signed Leino for a $4.5 million cap hit over the summer.

Miller himself has also struggled in net, posting a 3.12 goals against average along with a .898 save percentage – some of the worst numbers of his career.

“It’s not good hockey. It’s not good from top down,” Miller said of the team’s play along with his own. “I need to be better. I can’t seem to find a night where I can get in a groove.”

Going 2-6-2 over the last 10, the team’s recent struggles have prompted early discussion about their intentions come trade deadline time. Unless things dramatically improve over the next few weeks, the Sabres will likely be sellers. But who on the roster might be on their way out?

Brad Boyes, Paul Gaustad and Jochen Hecht are all potential unrestricted free agent that may have some value. Outside of those three, Tyler Myers is an interesting name to consider. Some rumor mongers have suggested that Buffalo may be willing to part with Myers as he has not developed like the team had hoped thus far. Myers is in the last year if his entry level contract before his new contract kicks in next season with a $5.5 million cap hit. Still, the likelihood that the team trades Myers remains slim for the time being.

Until then, Miller seems adamant that a roster overhaul won’t change what currently plagues the team.

“If you guys really think there’s going to be any kind of trade made anywhere that’s going to affect this team any more than we can affect it in this locker room, you guys are just … I don’t know,” said Miller. “I don’t know what to think because there’s no such trade.”

Coach Lindy Ruff also sounded off on the team’s recent woes and recent trade speculation surrounding the team.

“I’m under the premise that a one player trade deal can work at times,” Ruff said. “I’ve seen a lot of them where it doesn’t have any impact. The only way you’re going to succeed is by uniting as a team and getting through this.”

Ruff continued: “One player isn’t going to make a difference. A lot of times that one player leaving is a good player, and you’re getting a player from another team that had been having a tough time over there. It can work in situations. There are other times when it doesn’t make any difference at all.”

The immediate future looks rough for the Sabres as they face off against the Blackhawks, Jets, Blues and Devils before the All-Star break at the end of next week. All of those teams are playoff teams right now and the Sabres desperately need the points if they intend to make a push for a playoff spot themselves.

Pittsburgh Penguins’ center Evgeni Malkin shows a little love to Penguins’ fans after he scores against the Tampa Bay Lightning in the third period to put his team up by one. Malkin continued his dominance as he scored two more goals in the period to complete his hat trick. Malkin ended the night with 3 goals and 2 assist for 5 points out of the 6 goals scored by the Penguins. The Penguins beat the Lightning 6 – 3.

On a different note, is that Brooks Orpik’s twin brother in the baby blue Pens jersey?
