Videos to get Your Hockey Blood Flowing

Today marks the beginning of Hockey World Blog’s 2010-11 Team Previews. We will preview a team everyday throughout September. But before the season starts, let’s take a look back at some of the memorable moments over the history of the NHL.

Top 10 NHL Game 7 Moments

This was the first video I came across. It chronicles some of the most memorable goals, saves and blunders that occurred in the most exciting game in sports: an NHL game seven. Moment ranked nine and five were some of the most-played game seven goals in NHL history, while fans of Detroit and New Jersey will probably not want to revisit moments from the 2009 playoffs.

Top 10 NHL Playoff Controversial Goals/Non Goals

They say you can’t win the Stanley Cup without a little bit of luck. Over the years, teams have won the Stanley Cup with a bounce/goal/missed call going their way. This video is no different as it showed several teams getting a controversial goal going their way as far back as the second round that played a role in helping them advance to the Finals or even better, win the Stanley Cup. How different history would be if the controversy didn’t go in their favor?

Top 10 Between the Legs Goals

This is one of the most creative top ten lists I have seen. These are “one of a kind” goals, that are tough to even try in practice let alone execute in a game situation. A lot of the goals look similiar but they are still amazing to watch. They will make you say “Woah” more than Joey Lawrence in an episode of Blossom.

EA Sports NHL 11 Demo Release Tomorrow

With the woes of summer and no hockey in sight to be found, it seems we have not much to look forward to until the start of the pre-season. However, for those who like to live the NHL experience for yourself through video games, tomorrow brings a day to look forward to. EA Sports NHL 11 demo for PS3 and Xbox 360 will be available to donwload.

Gamers will be able to experience all that the new game has to offer; a new real time physics engine, new face-off system, quick dekes and broken sticks are just a few new features from EA. The game looks crisp and clean and full of promise.

The full version is set to release September 7. Pre-order from Gamestop in the States and receive GameStop’s exclusive in-game 20th Anniversary Bauer Boost Pack containing in-game Bauer stick, gloves and skates.

NHL 11 Cover Athletes Announced

As rumored last week, Chicago Blackhawks captain and 2010 Conn Smythe Award winner Jonathan Toews will be the main cover athlete of EA Sports NHL 11. He joins teammate Patrick Kane, who was on the cover of NHL 10. Other parts of the world will have NHL superstars on the cover, with Henrik and Daniel Sedin on Swedish versions of the game. New York Islanders star Mark Streit will appear on games sold in Switzerland.

NHL ‘11 Trailer

EA has released its first trailer for the upcoming NHL ‘11 game. No cover athlete has been announced yet, however, some leaked images from an EA website suggest Conn Smythe winner Jonathan Toews will appear on the cover. Chicago fans will surely be happy with this decision, but the rest of the hockey world will ponder why the cover athlete comes from the Chicago Blackhawks in two consecutive releases. Anyway, check out the new trailer below.

“Detroit sucks” chant erupts at Chicago celebration

For the past several seasons, the Chicago Blackhawks have sort of been a little brother to the Detroit Red Wings. You know, the brother who you can still put your palm on his forehead and keep him at arms length while he swings wildly and throws loose punches in your direction. Yeah, that kind of brother. And while the Blackhawks have made several key additions over the years and improved their squad season after season, they still couldn’t break out from behind the shadow of the Detroit Red Wings. That all changed earlier this week when the Blackhawks hoisted the Stanley Cup as the best team in the NHL. In celebration for their cup win,  Chicago fans proceeded to pull an extremely classy move and chant “Detroit sucks” at a celebration rally in the streets of Chicago. The video can be seen below:

I’ll be the first to admit that Chicago was the best team in the NHL this season and they were definitely the best team in the Stanley Cup Finals. They deserved to win the Stanley Cup. That being said, I’m not exactly sure why the Chicago fans would choose to acknowledge Detroit at that given moment instead of taking the opportunity to cheer for and support their own team that just won the Stanley Cup. It always boggles my mind when fans would choose to acknowledge a bitter rival or another franchise in any negative fashion when they could instead be cheering on and celebrating their own victory. Regardless, congrats to Chicago for their victory. They earned it.

Best Goal Horns and Celebration Songs

Goal horns and celebration songs is one thing that makes hockey the great sport it is.

Goal horns and celebration songs is one thing that makes hockey the great sport it is.

One of the beauties of the great game of hockey is that the home team is able to celebrate with a horn and song. You don’t see this in basketball because they simply score too much. You see it at college football and college hockey games with a fight song or chant (why hasen’t anyone brought any of the various SIEVE chants to the NHL?). You see it in the NFL (thank goodness my hometown Lions stink so we never have to hear it), as well as a soundbite in baseball. I rumbled throughout Youtube this week and found some of my favorite goal horn sounds as well as some of my favorite goal celebration songs. You can view all 30 NHL goal horns from this season here on Youtube.

Favorite Goal Horns:

  1. Calgary- This song makes the Sea of Red come alive and the Saddledome become electric.
  2. Edmonton- Can’t really explain it, I just love it.
  3. Los Angeles- Loud like a freight train coming at you.
  4. Washington- I like the police siren to accompany it.
  5. New York Rangers- Once you hear this song, you know you’re in MSG.

Least Favorite Goal Horns:

  1. Montreal- As much as I love the Habs, their goal horn is kinda annoying to hear.
  2. Columbus- Doesn’t have any uniqueness to it.
  3. Anaheim- It goes along with the duck theme, but it comes off as very low/deep sounding.
  4. San Jose- Had to hear it too much this playoff season.

 My Favorite Goal Songs

  1. Kernkraft 400- Zombie Nation (Sports Remix). Good song to get the crowd pumped up. As a Michigan State football fan, I had to endure this song several times watching the Spartans play at Penn State and their whiteouts.
  2. Kid Rock- American Bad Ass. This used to be the song after the Edmonton goal horn. I secretly want the Red Wings to adopt this as “Are You Ready For This” is so 1990’s. Has anyone else besides me wondered why a team in Canada used a song called “American Bad Ass”?
  3. Tim McGraw- I Like It, I Love It. While I have strong opinions why hockey shouldn’t be played south of the Mason-Dixon line (a blog on that will come in the off-season), I like the country music spin for the Predators.
  4. Gary Glitter- Rock and Roll Pt 2. Where else can you get away with yelling “HEY YOU SUCK!” without getting kicked out?

My Least Favorite Goal Song

  1. There’s only one entry in this category. It’s Chelsea Dagger by The Fratellis. This song is so annoying and bad that I don’t know if I will be able to watch any games of the Blackhawks-Sharks series. Chicago fans feel free to crucify me if you desire.

Taylor Hall dangles in Memorial Cup Tournament

Taylor Hall took a moment this past weekend to remind hockey fans why he will more than likely go number one or number two overall at the NHL Entry Draft this June. The following dangle comes courtesy of Hall during Windsor’s dominating 9-3 victory over the Brandon Wheat Kings in the Memorial Cup Tournament. Hall finished the game with two goals and a plus-2 rating.
