San Jose Sharks get their own beer

The San Jose Sharks have something that no other NHL team currently has—their own beer.

“Chum,” named after the bloody fish guts used to attract sharks in the ocean, is a “dry-hopped blood red ale” produced by Gordon Biersch Brewing Company out of San Jose. According to brewery’s website, the beer features “a rich malt bill, complemented by a spicy hop aroma from imported Hallertau and Tettnang hops. A smooth yet powerful beer just like the San Jose Sharks lineup. This ale will leave you circling for more.”

According to the San Jose Mercury News, the collaboration between the brewer and team came about over a dinner between Dan Gordon, brewery founder, and Sharks COO John Tortora. Gordon hoped to produce a beer for the team’s milestone 25th season last year, but the timeline proved too tight. Now, he’s just hoping fans can enjoy it deep into a long playoff run and perhaps another Stanley Cup Finals berth.

“I’ve been a die-hard Sharks fan since Day One, and we’ve been great partners for 15 years now,” Gordon said. “I don’t think that there’s any other NHL team that has its own beer.”

The beer is now available at local retail outlets in San Jose and to fans at the SAP Center, home of the Sharks.
