Former NHLer and two-time Stanley Cup winner Kevin Stevens was charged in federal court earlier this week with conspiring to sell oxycodone, a highly addictive opioid painkiller. According to The Boston Globe, Stevens, 51, and another man will be held until a detention hearing on Tuesday.

Stevens had a lengthy pro career as a star winger and forward, most notably joining Mario Lemieux and Jaromir Jagr in leading the Pittsburgh Penguins to two Stanley Cup titles in 1991 and 1992. He also played for the Boston Bruins, the Los Angeles Kings, the New York Rangers, and Philadelphia Flyers. In 874 career games, Stevens tallied 329 goals and 397 assists for 726 total points. He also represented the United States on the 1988 Olympic hockey team in Calgary.

In January 2000, Stevens was arrested east of St. Louis and charged with felony cocaine possession after police found him smoking crack with a prostitute at a hotel. He also combated alcoholism throughout his playing days. In a statement, his attorney, John J. Commisso of Jackson Lewis, P.C. in Boston, said that Stevens remains plagued with “injuries, pain, and other challenges.”

Stevens retired from the NHL in 2002.
