Goal 500 in Game 801 for Ovechkin

Alexander Ovechkin has more goals than anyone since he entered the league in 205-06. Tonight he reached a milestone when he scored goal No. 500 against Ottawa on home ice.

The 185th power play goal of his career came at 16:19 of the middle frame against Andrew Hammond. Jason Chimera was behind the goal line to the left of Hammond. He sauced the puck through the slot to Ovechkin who was setup just below the top of the circle to the right of Hammond and ripped a wrist shot over Hammond’s glove and inside the crossbar.

After he scored, he was mobbed by his teammates on the ice while the fans in the stands cheered. His family and the Capitals ownership were in attendance and stood on their feet during the celebration.

This was the second milestone he reached this season. He scored his 484th NHL goal to pass Sergei Fedorov for the most in the League by a Russian-born player.

He was the fifth-fastest player reach 500. The only players to score 500 goals in less than 800 games were Wayne Gretzky (575 games), Mario Lemieux (605),Mike Bossy (647) and Brett Hull (693). Jarome Iginla was the most remember member of the 500 goal club, reaching that milestone Jan. 7, 2012.

This was his fourth goal in Washington’s last three games. He scored twice last night in a 4-3 overtime win at New York Rangers.
