Bauer Nexus Product Line – Skates, Sticks, Protective

ORLANDO, FL, Oct. 27, 2011 /CNW/ – Bauer Hockey, Inc., the world’s leading manufacturer of ice hockey equipment, continued its commitment to innovation as the company unveiled its “Back to Hockey” 2012 product line to retailers from around the world during the company’s annual BauerWorld event held this week in Orlando, Florida.

The highlight of the event was the introduction of NEXUS, a revolutionary family of hockey equipment inspired by the needs of the game’s best players. The NEXUS family, which includes a full line of skates, sticks and under protective, is the first new full family of product introduced by Bauer Hockey since the debut of the Bauer VAPOR skate in 1997.

The NEXUS brand, which will be available at retail in June 2012, has already been well received by some of the NHL’s best players and is expected to quickly become one of the top brands in the game.

“The launch of NEXUS marks a major milestone in our company’s history as we introduce an entirely new brand family to the industry,” said Kevin Davis, Chief Executive Officer and President, Bauer Performance Sports. “VAPOR and SUPREME have become the most successful brands in the sport and we believe the NEXUS line will be just as successful as those two powerful brands.”

The NEXUS line combines traditional styling with state-of-the-art technological advancements that have become synonymous with Bauer Hockey products. The NEXUS family compliments the VAPOR and SUPREME lines by delivering a new category of high performance products with a unique fit and feel. NEXUS line of skates offers a wider fit than both existing Bauer Hockey brands, the stick line offers a unique flex profile and the under protective provides a more traditional profile.

Vancouver’s Ryan Kesler, one of the top players in the game today, will be one of the first athletes to wear products from the new NEXUS line and will represent the new family in global marketing efforts.

“I’ve been a Bauer athlete for many years and I’m looking forward to being one of the first players to wear the NEXUS equipment,” Kesler said. “It looks great – it’s something that looks more traditional which I really like, but obviously has all the technology you would expect from Bauer equipment. I think guys in the NHL are really going to like it and so will a lot of players at all levels.”

Fox and DirecTV in Money Fight: Viewers Ultimate Losers

Beginning Tuesday, you might not have some of your favorite channels if you are a DirecTV subscriber.

Hockey fans: be prepared to pack patience starting tomorrow as you can potentially lose your Fox Regional Sports Networks because News Corp (FOX) and DirecTV is in the middle of a heated rights fees dispute. Just like we seen with DirecTV and Versus two years ago that began in September and ended in March, this one might take a while to resolve.

And not only will you lose popular channels like your Fox Sports (insert city or region here), but you will also lose channels like FX, SPEED, and Fox Soccer. Those channels (alone with FS Detroit) compromise 80 percent of my television habits between Premier League soccer, Formula 1 racing, and shows like It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia and The League.

In reading articles and press releases from both sides, the Fox side of the issue is rebutting the claims that DirecTV is making  that Fox wants a 40 percent increase in carriage fees. FOX appears to have strong demands that DirecTV simply isn’t going stand up for. Part of my wants to believe they will have they will have it resolved because sports fans and television watchers will be in a compete outrage if they lose their favorite sports teams. As a subscriber to NHL Center Ice, I am feeling screwed because I paid a good amount of money for the service and if I lose games because of this for a substantial amount of time I should get some money jack. I know this happens often with television networks and the cable providers. In the end, the ones who are getting screwed are the customers who want to watch their favorite teams and shows without having to pay an arm and leg to do so.

This will also affect not only residential subscribers, also will be affected in the 19.4 million subscribers are bars, restaurants and business who depend on sports being shown on their televisions to bring in fans to watch their favorite team play.

If you want to do something about this issue, see the websites above and voice your opinion to both FOX and DirecTV. For additonal information, check out this article printed in the Los Angeles Times.

Penguins to Host 2012 Entry Draft

The season has just started and we are already thinking about next year. The NHL has announced that the CONSOL Energy Center, home ice to the Pittsburgh Penguins, will host the 2012 Entry Draft.

The first round will begin on Friday, June 22. Rounds two through seven will be hosted the day after.

The entry Draft has turned into quite an event with the NHL Network in the States covering the event. Analysts, hosts and the like all chip in on who will be drafted first, why a team should pick Player A over Player B, and so forth. Interviews with the shell shocked rookies are always nice to see also. A nice reminder that hockey players are the best and most down to earth athletes around.

Ray Shero, Penguins GM had this to say about the event.

“What you are going to see here are future star players. You’re going to see broadcasters, general managers, and scouts.” Shero said. “It’s also a great day for the fans. They can see the next up-and-coming players and interact with a lot of different people.”

Shero also noted.

“There will be over 350 scouts in attendance and these guys work over 363 days a year over these two days, so it’s a very important time for the scouting staffs around the NHL.”

To this day I have yet to see an Entry Draft, but, it is definitely on my bucket list. Maybe once the Detroit Red Wings finally get a new arena, cross your fingers that day comes sometime soon, they can play hosts. If so, I’m definitely getting tickets.

Any readers attended an Entry Draft it be nice to hear about your experience. Feel free to send pictures to eb@hockeyworldblog.com and I’ll post them.

Skating With The Wings

As cold as it is in Sweden during majority of the year, not everyone plays hockey. They are quite impressive in other sports as the Swedish soccer teams are highly ranked in the world. The men’s team is ranked 14th in the latest FIFA rankings while the women are fifth. On the ice, the men’s team is ranked third in the latest IIHF rankings while the women are fourth.

They aren’t as impressive on the basketball court, but one of the best players to come from Sweden just happens to play for a sports town known for star players from Sweden. Standing at 6’10″ and 232 lbs., Detroit Pistons forward Jonas Jerebko has made a name for himself in the Motor City. He’s the second Swedish-born player in the NBA after Miles Simon in 1999. Jerebko was drafted in 2009 by the Pistons and was very impressive, averaging nine points and six rebounds in 28 minutes of action in 80 games. He was in the starting lineup in 73 of those in season where he was named to the NBA All-Rookie Second Team.

Just like the NHL in 2004-05, the NBA is currently in a lockout. And just like the NHL then, games are being canceled and there is a high chance there would be no NBA season. Jerebko missed all of last season when he suffered a injury to his Achillies’ tendon in the preseason. He is currently healthy and ready to go back on the court but because of the lockout he has to occupy his time in other fashions. Assuming he’s bored of IKEA [because there's only so much you can do there], he took the ice for a morning skate with the Detroit Red Wings. He’s been spotted at games several times since he’s been in Detroit, as there are seven Swedes on the 25-man roster. He’s made friends with several of them, including Niklas Kronwall. Kronwall lent Jerebko some of his gear when the basketball player took to the ice. He didn’t look too bad when shooting the puck, but he still needs to work on his skating and balance.

Jerebko won’t be giving up his day job anytime soon, but if he were to Jerebko would be the tallest player to ever play in the NHL. He would be one inch taller than 6’9″ Zdeno Chara. Check out this NHL.com video from earlier this week when Fox Sports Detroit caught Jerebko skating with the Red Wings.

Kings Look to Prove Their Worth

Jonathan Quick, net-minder for the Los Angeles Kings has topped the charts for fantasy goalies. Going 6-0-1 in his first 7 starts, his play could be an early indicator of the Kings success this year.

Tonight, the Kings will face the Phoenix Coyotes in a division showdown. The Coyotes are off to a rough start, 4-3-2 in 9 games so far, look to build upon their recent win over the New Jersey Devils. With Ray Whitney, Keith Yandle and Captain Shane Doan leading the team, it is only a matter of time before the Coyotes fight for first place within the division. Factor in a new netminder Mike Smith, after Ilya Bryzgalov went to the Philadelphia flyers (3-4-1 and a 3.44 goals against average this season), and the team is definitely hungry.

The Kings come into this season with a lot to prove after an early exit last year in the playoffs. This was largely in part to the injury to Captain Anze Kopitar. This season, Kopitar looks to have recovered from his broken ankle, as he is tearing it up with 4 goals, 8 assists and a plus 5 overall rating. Furthermore, new addition Mike Richards has 1 goal and 8 helpers so far. Richards had 23 goals last season and 31 the season before that, fans are just waiting for the dam to break.

You cannot speak about the Kings without mentioning defensman Drew Doughty. Doughty had a rough start to the season, holding out for more money then now having an upper-body injury. Tonight he is expected to suit back up against the Coyotes, and hopefully tries to prove he is indeed worth his contract.

The season is young, still too early to see who really has what it takes this year to go all the way. Still, the Kings are looking really good early on. Once all the puzzle pieces start coming together, it will be interesting to see if any team in the Pacific division stands a chance.

Bauer Supreme Total One NXG Ice Hockey Skates

Update: The new Bauer Supreme Total One NXG skates have been released. If you’re picking up a pair, head over to Pure Hockey to snag them for $799.99. Use the coupon code HOCKEYWORLD while you’re there to save 10% on select products.

In April, 2012, Bauer will release their newest skate, the Bauer Supreme Total One NXG ice hockey skate. We brought you a sneak peek at a prototype version of the 2012 Bauer Supreme skates back in July, but now we’re looking at the final design of the skate.

You can see in the picture below (courtesy of HWB fan Tyrone, thanks bud!) that a few concepts from the prototype made their way into the Bauer Supreme Total One NXG skates, and the Total One NXG will definitely be a step up from the original Total One skates, which were released in Spring, 2010.

Heading into the features of the Total One NXG, you’ll find a 3D anaformable Curv composite quarter package which will definitely be rigid and strong enough for all high level players. Moving along the front you’ll find Bauer’s customizable 3 flex tongue. The Curv composite inserts allow you to customize the flex of your tongue adding a “spring back” type response after each stride and flex of the tongue. The 3 flex options for the tongue will be mid, stiff, and extra stiff. The tongue inserts are replaceable, depending on how much resistance you want on your tongue flex, and can be switched out quite easily.

On the back of the boot, Bauer has loaded its Total One NXG with a patented flexible tendon guard. “The tendon guard on the Total One NXG allows Bauer to reduce the overall skate weight by even more than before. This patented technology provides the player with an increase of 5 degrees more range of motion adding to the overall skating efficiency through increased stride length” according to Bauer Hockey.

Moving inside the boot, you will see a hydrophobic grip light-liner which has great moisture wicking properties. Alongside the ankle, the interior of the boot will feature lightweight anaform fit-foam ankle pads. These are the same found in most high end Bauer skates, and the result is a ton of comfort for your foot and ankle pads which help keep the foot in place. The footbed featured on the Total One NXG skate will be Bauer’s form-fit+ footbed with stabalizer grip. The boot will be thermoformable of course, allowing for a fit more customized to your foot shape.

Beneath the boot, Bauer has loaded the Total One NXG with the Tuuk Lightspeed 2 holder and LS fusion runner. This is one of the most popular holder and runner combinations on the market today, and will suit the needs of elite hockey players everywhere.

The new Bauer Supreme Total One NXG skates will be available in April 2012 from local and online retailers.

What are your thoughts on the new Bauer Supreme Total One NXG skates? Will you be willing to shell out some coin  to pick up a pair when they are released?

Reebok Ai9 Stick Review: Initial Impressions

Reebok has pushed forward in the hockey stick market with their latest release, the Reebok Ai9. With a blend of sick looks, new technology, and plenty of NHL stars backing it up, Reebok hopes to have one of the hottest sticks on the market with the Ai9. Thanks to Reebok, the members of Hockey World Blog were sent an Ai9 to determine if the stick will sink or swim in an increasingly saturated composite stick market.

Specs: Reebok Ai9, Griptonite Grip, Crosby curve, 85 Flex

Modifications: None

Reebok Ai9 Hockey Stick Features

Reebok Ai9 Hockey Stick Features

Appearance and Design: The Ai9 is easily one of the best looking sticks Reebok has designed. The blade of the stick is finished in a slick matte black, but also contains a transparent window which allows you to see the weave pattern used underneath. The matte finish succumbs to increased red graphics as you climb up the taper, and eventually turns into Reebok’s griptonite finish.

The griptonite shaft feels like a traditional grip model, but has a subtle, diamond looking, raised texture on the forehand, backhand, and top of the shaft. This element is also present on the clear version, and definitely adds to the visual appeal of the stick. The shaft fades from black to white as you climb further up the stick towards the butt end. Reebok and Ai9 logos are also extremely prevalent, but blend in modestly to the overall design.

The Reebok Ai9 also features a bit of new technology, including their 2:1 Power Taper Ratio which essentially means the top and bottom of the shaft is going to be twice as stiff as the sides. This is going to provide increased blade stability when shooting, allowing you to effortlessly pick your corners. Additionally, the Power Taper Ratio is going to increase the power and kick on your shots.

You will also find Reebok has changed to a mid kick-point on the Ai9, as opposed to the low kick-point featured on the SickKick series. This change is going to provide additional power, as the stick will take more time to load. This will definitely benefit defenseman taking slapshots from the point, but could hinder players who primarily have a quick release with snapshots and wrist shots.

Balance: Upon picking up the Reebok Ai9, you’ll immediately notice it is a well balanced stick. It feels a bit heavier than some other top of the line sticks out there, but the optimized balance helps the increased weight to go unnoticed. The new Optibalance technology featured on the Ai9 integrates weight at the top of the shaft to improve the balance. The idea behind Optibalance sounds a bit like the adjustable weights featured in the EQ50, but in the case of the Reebok Ai9, you have no ability to adjust the weight. To increase quality control, Reebok is now checking every Ai9 stick before it leaves the factory to ensure it’s optimal balance point. While this might not mean much to some people, others appreciate the little things that the equipment manufacturers do to provide the best product for a consumer.

Feel: As with most one piece sticks these days, the Reebok Ai9 has provided a terrific feel for the puck during the time I have used it. Feel for an ice hockey puck was great, but what surprised me most was the ability to feel a lighter roller hockey puck on the blade as well. Typically I’m used to glancing down at the puck a bit more while playing roller hockey, due to its lightness, but had no real issues with the Ai9. Sending hard and accurate passes was done without a hitch in both places, but I did notice a bit of difficulty catching a few passes on the ice. This wasn’t a frequent occurrence, but led to quite a bit of frustration when it did happen. This could simply be the part of the adjustment to a new stick however, and we’ll have more detail on that in our full review.

Shooting and Accuracy: Shooting the puck with an Ai9, especially slapshots, is an awesome feeling. You can feel the mid flex-point really load up on a slapshot and powerfully launch the puck. I can confidently say that the Ai9 has allowed me to shoot some my hardest and fastest slapshots ever. Fortunately, the accuracy aspect has been spot on as well. Despite using an unfamiliar Crosby curve, I was able to place slapshots up, down, left or right as I pleased.

I did not spend as much time with the Ai9 on wrist or snap shots, but from the experience I did have, I was impressed. These shots tend to be my bread and butter, so I will be all over them in our full review. From an accuracy standpoint, I had the ability to pinpoint specific locations much better than on slapshots, and rightfully so. In fact, as I played a game of 3-bar from about 20 ft. back, I was able to knock off all three bars in only four shots, which is somewhat unusual for me.

Overall Impressions: This is my first long term experience with a Reebok stick, and so far it has truly impressed me. The Reebok design team nailed the look, as it has eye appeal, along with a handful of new features and great performance so far. Balance and feel are terrific out of the gate, and my slapshots have never looked faster. If you’re a Reebok fan, I think you’ll be impressed with what they’ve done with the Ai9. Coming from any other brand, you will be just as pleased with the power and performance found in Reebok’s latest stick.

Although our review starts here with our initial impressions, follow us in the weeks to come as we put this stick to the test in game situations to see how it holds up as we continue to put it through the grind. We will continue to assess many of the areas we have covered here and also get a better feel for the durability of the stick. Keep checking back for more!

If you’re thinking about purchasing the Reebok Ai9, head over to Pure Hockey to grab one. You can get the clear or grip Reebok Ai9 for $239.99, and use the coupon code ‘hockeyworld’ for 10% off select items.

Rangers Finally Return Home

The NHL season is three weeks old and the New York Rangers finally get to play in front of their home fans at Madison Square Garden. MSG as it is known, is in the process of a thee-year renovation project to give the facility a major overhaul. In a NHL player poll conducted at the All-Star Game last season, MSG was voted the second-worse ice surface in the league. Only the BankAtlantic Center had a worse result where 20 percent of players voted the home of the Florida Panthers as a worse ice surface compared to the 14 percent that voted for the Rangers’ barn.

The newly-renovated New York Rangers locker room.

The renovations won’t be completed for another two years but the construction work will be scheduled mostly during the summer when the Rangers and New York Knicks will not be playing. The New York Liberty of the WNBA played games this summer at the Prudential Center in Newark, NJ. In the seven games where they were on the road, the team went 3-2-2. They technically played one home game, when they opened the season in Sweden. Tonight’s game against opens a six-game home stand where they face teams from both the east and west coast.

The Rangers and Knicks both received renovated locker room facilities. The Rangers join a new line of teams in circular/oval shaped locker rooms. Most reams have rectangular rooms but after feedback from players, they had a desire for a more round-shaped room to encourage team unity and the feeling of togetherness.

When the project is complete in 2014, the most anticipated addition will be the upcoming Chase Bridges. to that list. The arena will feature literally two suspended seating areas that will extend from the less-obstructed 10th floor and go across to the other side. Each bridge will seat 500 fans, but it will not affect the overall capacity; it will remain the same as it is now (roughly 20,000). During Phase 1 of the renovation, there was up to 1,000 construction workers at the arena around the clock working. During the Rangers and Knicks season this year (if there is an NBA season), work will continue to occur hours after a game that same night.

Warrior Krown 360 Helmet

Warrior Hockey recently unveiled their new Warrior Krown 360 helmet at the Let’s Play Hockey Expo in Las Vegas. Last month we brought you a picture of the Warrior Koretex helmet, but we have not heard much about it since. It appears the Koretex may have just been a prototype name. The Warrior Krown 360, however is the helmet we can definitely expect to hit retail stores in the not too distant future. What makes the Krown 360 helmet unique is it’s ability to further customize the fit to your head shape. Most helmets allow for adjustments to the length of the helmet, but the Warrior Krown 360 will allow you to adjust the width as well.

Most hockey pundits sounding off about the Krown 360 are not very pleased with its aesthetic appeal. Swagger has become an important factor for Warrior Hockey, and while players will pick up the new helmet simply because it is a Warrior product, others will opt for a more traditional looking helmet. Keep in mind, however, that the most important job for a helmet is to protect your melon. If Warrior has made any dramatic improvements in head protection, this may be a good pick up for players with a history of concussion.

Take a look at the new Warrior Krown 360 helmet below and let us know what you think!
