Will the NHL have a 50-goal scorer this season?

In the NHL, a player scoring 50 goals in a single season might be one of the greatest individual feats a player can accomplish, something that potentially elevates players from offensive-threat to superstar status. Throughout the NHL’s illustrious history, this feat has been accomplished 185 times by 87 players. However, for the first time since the 2003-04 season, and for the first since the lockout, the threat of not having a single 50-goal scorer is imminent.

Corey Perry (pictured) of the Anaheim Ducks and Steven Stamkos of the Tampa Bay Lightning are closest to attaining the feat as Perry has 46 goals and Stamkos trails with 44 while Tampa Bay has six games remaining to Anaheim’s five. While it’s an outside shot, both players have the skill to average six goals over their remaining games to attain 50 on the season. Daniel Sedin currently ranks third in goals scored with 40, which is a personal best for the Vancouver forward, but is unlikely to make a push for 50 this year.

Stamkos finds himself in familiar territory this year after netting 51 goals last year in his sophomore season. Talks early this season suggested that Stamkos could score 50 goals in 50 games with the pace he was on, but the pace didn’t hold. Still, Stamkos has become one of the league’s most potent goal scorers joining the likes of Ilya Kovalchuck, Alexander Ovechkin and Sidney Crosby. With 88 points, Stamkos also has a real shot at his second consecutive 90-point season.

At 25-years-old, Corey Perry is a surprise at the top of the goals leader board this year. While he already has two 70-point seasons under his belt, Perry has already shattered his personal best of 32 goals from 2008-09 and could achieve the first 90-point season of his career. Perry remains a triple threat as a player capable of scoring, making plays and someone who doesn’t shy away from a fight or time spent in the penalty box. Perhaps more importantly, Perry has emerged as a leader and a superstar on the ice for the Ducks and will remain an essential part of the organization for years to come. His incredible play this season, especially when Ryan Getzlaf went down due to injuries, is a big reason why the Ducks are in the playoff hunt.

Notably absent from this year’s goal scoring leaders are Alexander Ovechkin and Sidney Crosby. Ovechkin has struggled this season and is on pace for the lowest output of his career in terms of both goals and total points. Ovechkin has scored 40 or more goals in each of his five NHL seasons and has cracked the 50-goal mark four times. This year he will barely reach 30.

Crosby, however, only played in 41 games before going down with a concussion in early January. Despite playing in nearly half the games as the rest of the league, he still ranks 10th in the league in goals with 32 and 20th in the league in total points scored with 66. While Crosby certainly won’t reach 50 thanks to injuries, he very well could end the season with the best goals per game percentage in the NHL.

With a handful of games still left in the regular season, both Perry and Stamkos still have time and both have the talent to reach 50 goals. The Ducks are barely clinging to a playoff spot in the West, so Perry could continue with his offensive barrage and make a last ditch effort at 50. Stamkos, on the other hand, plays with one of the best wingers in the game in Martin St. Louis, who has been on an offensive tear lately, and Stamkos could benefit as he makes a bid for 50.

What do you think? Do either of these players have what it takes to make 50 or will the NHL go without a 50-goal scorer this season?

Mission Axiom T10 Revolt Roller Hockey Skate

Mission is gearing up for October with a “clean and mean” new skate. The latest to join the Axiom line will be the Mission Axiom T10 Revolt roller hockey skate. We’ve got a great picture below of the brand new Mission Axiom T10 Revolt, so let us know what you think. In my opinion, it’s definitely a great looking roller hockey boot, sticking with the real flashy nature of Mission over the past few years. They seem to be taking it a step further this year, going with the white boot, real shiny graphics, and some yellow laces and wheels to really make the skate pop. The Mission Axiom T10 Revolt will be a great skate for anyone looking to be stick out in a crowd with their high end gear and performance. As time goes on, the looks continue to grow on me and I’m really digging the new skate.

When you dive into the specs on this skate, you can see why it will sit atop the Mission line of skates. The quarter package is going to be an ultra-light reinforced nylon tech mesh which will be durable and stiff enough to hold up to the demands of competitive roller hockey. The T10 Revolt will have a nice perforated two-piece white felt, true vented tongue, with a new VEX foam lace bite insert. The ventilation will be great for helping to keep your feet dry during game play. Another new feature on the new skate will be metal tipped yellow laces. This is a good move and hopefully they new lace tips prove to be more durable.

Moving to the bottom of the skate,  you’ll find an aluminized glass composite outsole which will really help with energy transfer through your foot into the skate. The Axiom T10 Revolt will come with the standard high-end magnesium hi-lo vanguard chassis, along with Rink Rat Hornet Split LE XXX grip wheels. I don’t know how many of you have seen the Split wheels in action, but along with performing well, they look pretty sick when they spin. The T10′s will also feature Mission Swiss LE 608 bearings.

If you’re looking to get into a new pair of skates this fall, and Mission is your brand and fit, definitely check out the Mission Axiom T10 Revolt skate. You can pre-order the Axiom T10 at Inline Warehouse right now, and they will begin shipping skates on September 15th. The T10′s will retail slightly higher than the Axiom T9, coming in at $649.99.

Bauer Vapor APXR Roller Hockey Skates

Update (7/19/11): Details are finally starting to flow about the new Bauer Vapor APXR roller hockey skate. The boot will be the same as the Vapor APX ice hockey skate, featuring the 3D lasted ALIVE composite upper with new molded X-rib pattern. On the inside we’ll have a hydra max 2 liner with integrated total edge comfort: 1 part moisture wicking/1 part abrasion resistance. But rather than the form-fit 3 tongue which is found on the APX, the APXR inline skate will have the form-fit 2 molded white felt tongue. The outsole of the skate will be an aluminized glass composite, which will be great for energy transfer.

As far as roller hockey components, you’re going to see a lot more top end stuff on this skate. The chassis will be the magnesium hi-lo vanguard that we’re used to seeing on Bauer/Mission skates, and it will come stock with some great Labeda Addiction XXX grip wheels. You’re also going to be rolling on the Swiss LE 608 bearings if you pick up a pair of the APXR skates.

The Bauer Vapor APXR will only come in senior sizes 6-12, full and half, and will also come in D and EE widths. I know many of you have been wondering about price, and we have confirmed, the APXR will retail for $850, making it Bauer’s most expensive skate to date. This may seem overwhelming, but as we heard in part one of our interview with Bauer’s Director of R&D, people are willing to pay top dollar to get the absolute best performance out of a piece of equipment.

I have to say, this is definitely one of the best looking roller hockey skates I have ever seen. The only thing I’m not digging about the Bauer Vapor APXR are the orange accents on the wheels, chassis and especially the laces. Playing roller hockey most of my life, I’m definitely aware that there are standards for being flashy on the rink, but I would definitely switch my laces out for some traditional ones (if the orange comes stock). Besides that, we can see they’re sticking with the Labeda Addiction wheels, which is definitely a good choice. Along with the great wheels, you will also be getting the magnesium hi-lo chassis featured on all Bauer/Mission top end skates.

As for the boot itself, the Bauer Vapor APXR will definitely live up to the hype generated by its ice counterpart, and will incorporate many of the same features. It looks like they added a more defined area of protection on the front part of the APXR boot. This will take all the scratches when the boot rubs against the floor while turning or taking a stride. I’m still sort of perplexed on why they wouldn’t just add the plastic cap like you see on Mission and Tour skates, but at the same time, this choice offers a much cleaner look.

Those of you looking at getting a pair of Bauer Vapor APXR skates won’t have to wait long. The skates will hit stores September 15th, or, you can pre-order a pair from Inline Warehouse right now!

What are your thoughts on the new Bauer Vapor APXR roller hockey skate?

Hockey World Blog NHL Power Rankings: Week 24

The regular season is almost over. While some teams are playing simply to get younger players experience to get some momentum for next season, others still have playoff spots to play for. Four spots are claimed in the Eastern Conference while only one is officially secured in the Western Conference. By this time next week, there could be a few more spots earned on both sides. In the East, there are five teams playing for four spots. Carolina is the team with work ahead of them as they are five points behind Buffalo. The other teams are safely in with room to spare (barring a collapse seen currently by Minnesota), so they are simply playing for playoff position and seeding.

In the West, there are nine teams playing for seven spots. Of those nine, only Detroit and San Jose can be considered safely in. The others are separated by only seven points.

Rank Team Last Week Team Notes
1 VAN 2 The team playing the best hockey improved to 11-2 in the month of March. They play their final game in the United States tomorrow night in Nashville before finishing the remainder of their schedule in Canada.
2 PHI 3  Despite losing to Boston last night, I kept the Flyers at this spot because this was their first loss in regulation in three weeks. March 6 was when they got whipped 7-0 against New York. The Flyers fans boo’ed the division-leading team off the ice at the end of the game last night. And I thought Detroit Red Wings fans were harsh on their team.
3 WAS 1 Just like Vancouver, Washington has a 11-2 record in March. Their second loss came this week at the hands of Ottawa. They did bounce back and beat a slumping Montreal team on the road the next night.
4 PIT NR  I don’t know about you, but I all but buried this team once Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin went down with injuries. They won all four games they played last week, which just happened to be when Matt Cooke began his suspension. Once the dirtiest goon in the NHL was benched, the Pens started playing hockey and winning.
5 NSH NR  The Preds are playing good hockey just at the right time. They just have found the right time to get hot and play their way into the playoffs versus depending on other teams to lose. They find themselves only five games of Detroit, and the two teams meet Saturday night in Nashville.
6 NYR NR  Another team that has played their way to inside the playoff bubble, the Rangers are sporting a 8-3-1 record this month. They still have work left to secure a playoff spot, as they have three road games followed by ending the season with three at home.

25 MTL NR  When you lose three straight games by a combined 11-0 score, something is wrong. The Canadiens are currently inside the playoff bubble, but if Carey Price and Co. don’t start scoring goals and winning games, they could miss the playoffs for the second time since the lockout.
26 FLA NR  Should they lose tomorrow night at Columbus, the Panthers will finish the month without a road victory. Aside from three overtime/shootout victories in February, they last time they won in regulation on the road was January 25 in Madison Square Garden.
27 CBJ 27  The Blue Jackets were shut out for the fifth time this season Thursday night in Phoenix, but three of those five blankings have come in the last five games. Combine that with scoring once yesterday against Vancouver, the Jackets have scored three goals in their last five regulation losses.
28 COL 29 Colorado is slowly climbing their way out of the cellar. What has worked in their favor is the two teams ranked below them in this week’s rankings is also in their division. The big question looming in Denver is weather long-time player Milan Hejduk will return next season as he hits free agency.
29 EDM 30 Early in the month, they won three straight games. Since then, they have earned only three points. They were beating Calgary 4-1 with 14 minutes remaining only to choke away the game and lose in a shootout. Only seven games remain before their season is over.
30 MIN 28  All the Wild had to do was win games and play their way into the playoffs. But the playoff chase collapse is in progress as they have lost eight straight games. They have earned only six points this entire month in 12 games. They have two games remaining this month.

Roloson, Dubnyk make case for save of the year

As much as we all love a good deke or an awesome dangle, it takes an incredible presence of mind to be the top goaltender for any organization – especially since the blame seems to fall on the goalie’s shoulders more often than not when a team just isn’t playing all that great. That’s because goalies, more than most other players on the ice, have the ability to single-handedly change the course of a game with their sharp play as they leave snipers from the other squad shaking their heads wondering what they need to do to beat the brick wall in front of them. Check out the two videos below of goaltenders Dwayne Roloson and Devan Dubnyk doing just that to their opposition. Don’t be surprised if both of these saves become candidates for Save of the Year this summer.

1993 Stanley Cup Awarded to City Without Team

What other sports typos have you seen around hockey?

I  have a job in an office building just like most other people. I have my own desk area, and I have the liberty to decorate it however I desire. I believe I am one of only two hockey fans out of my company with over 250 employees because it is the only one seen with anything hockey (and sports) related around their desk.

I bought one of those daily calendars that has a funny or interesting NHL statistic or fact that you can tear apart everyday and learn something new. I don’t look forward because I like the intrigue of learning something new. I learned something new Friday: that in 1993 a team named the Dallas Stars won the Stanley Cup over the Buffalo Sabres. I hope Montreal Canadiens fans who have this calendar didn’t see that today in offices across the country.

Of course we all know this is  simple typo because we know Brett Hull scored one of the most infamous Stanley Cup winning goals in 1999, not 1993. Dallas didn’t even have their own franchise in the spring of 1993. The Stars moved from Minneapolis in 1993 and started playing in Dallas at the start of the 1993-94 season.

While we are on the subject, below is a list of some of the more well known engraving mistakes on the only North American professional trophy where players names are on it: the Stanley Cup.

  • Dickie Moore won six cups, his name was spelled differently five times (D. Moore, Richard Moore, R. Moore, Dickie Moore, Rich Moore).
  • Bob Gainey’s name was spelled “Gainy” when he was part of several Montreal championship teams in the 1970′s.
  • On the 1963 entry, you will see Toronto Maple “Leaes” instead of Leafs.
  • The engraver in 1972 must have heard Boston natives say “Bqstqn” because that’s how it was spelled.
  • Teams that won four-straight championships aren’t spared either, as the New York “IIanders” was engraved in 1981.
  • Adam Deadmarsh is the first player to have his name changed following a mistake. His name was spelled “Deadmarch” in 1996.
  • Other players who have had their names corrected include Manny “Lagace” Legace, Eric “Staaal” Staal, and Kris “Vertseeg” Versteeg.

New Jersey Devils Playoff Chances

Ilya Kovalchuk New Jersey Devils

Ilya Kovalchuk of the New Jersey Devils

From the start of the regular season to the second week of January, no team had an outlook as miserable as the New Jersey Devils. With star forward Zach Parise sidelined for the better part of the remainder of the season, fans began to lose all hope in their home team. But after firing former head coach John MacLean, and re-hiring defensive minded Jacques Lemaire, things slowly began to turn around in Newark.

The low point for the Devils, on January 8th, 2011, saw the team sitting last place in the NHL and holding only 27 points. The very next night, however, you could sense a change. With the red hot Tampa Bay Lightning in town, the Devils rallied for a 6-3 victory, piling up the most goals in a game since a 5-0 rout of the Capitals on November 22. Five nights later in Tampa Bay we saw a repeat performance from the Devils, winning 5-2 and picking up only their second set of back-to-back wins all season. The next week, more of the same. The Devils picked up points in eight of their final nine games in January, and were no longer an afterthought.

Come February, the New Jersey Devils were the hottest team in the NHL. GM Lou Lamoriello, who brought in the talented Ilya Kovalchuck, was finally seeing his work pay off. Kovalchuk, who had been streaky throughout the season, began to settle in to his role and picked up points in all but one game in February, scoring seven goals in the process. The Devils added eleven wins to their record, and notched points in all but one game in February. For a team that had such a slim chance at making the playoffs one month prior, the goal was actually looking like it might happen.

Through the start of March, more of the same. The team looked brand new, and unbeatable, behind the stellar play of Martin Brodeur and Johan Hedberg. After their win against the Thrashers on March 15th, the Devils had worked their way up to a 5.74% chance of making the playoffs according to Sports Club Stats.

Unfortunately, a string of three losses in the four games following has taken a huge hit in their shot at the playoffs. With only nine games left in the season, we will have to see the Devils win virtually every game left, and have a great bit of luck, to keep them in it. While we can’t say they’re definitely out of it yet, things are starting to look grim again for the Devils.

On a positive note, for anyone who is still holding on to hope, Zach Parise is set to return to game action March 30th against the Islanders. Will he be a difference maker coming down the stretch? Can he help the Devils complete the impossible turnaround?

Five first round playoff matchups we want to see

With the playoffs roughly two and a half weeks away, there are still a lot of points to be had as teams jockey for positioning and try to solidify themselves with the best seed possible – or a playoff berth in general as many teams are still fighting for the coveted 8th spot in both the Eastern and Western Conferences.

In the East, Buffalo is clinging to a three-point lead over the Carolina Hurricane for the 8th spot while the Toronto maple Leafs are right on their tail with 76 points. In the West, the Ducks are securely in 8th place but the Stars and Flames are one and two points behind respectively, meaning Anaheim has to play top-notch hockey for the remainder of the season to maintain their playoff aspirations.

With the standings changing on a daily basis, here are five of the first round playoff matchups that we would love to see happen in this year’s Stanley Cup playoffs.

Matchup: Vancouver vs Calgary

Not only does this have the potential to be the only all-Canadian matchup if the first round, and perhaps of the playoffs in general, but Vancouver and Calgary are also division rivals which could make for a very physical and intense matchup between two teams who are very familiar with one another. It would also pit two seasoned goaltenders against each other in Roberto Luongo and Mikka Kiprusoff. Neither has had much success in the playoffs recently and both would look to step up to the challenge and backstop their team to victory.

Will we see this matchup? Perhaps, but the Flames need to play much better down the stretch if they intend to catch the Ducks, who are 8-2-0 over their last 10 while the Flames are a mediocre 4-4-2.

Matchup: San Jose vs Chicago

Goaltender Antti Niemi won the Stanley Cup with the Blackhawks last season before the team had to forgo resigning him due to salary cap restraints. The Sharks quickly snatched him up and Niemi has put up good numbers in San Jose with a 2.48 goals against average and a .916 save percentage while accumulating 30 wins with the Sharks. Chicago, meanwhile, has had to rely on rookie goaltender Corey Crawford since Marty Turco, who was brought in as a veteran (and cheaper) replacement to Niemi, has been an absolute bust. But goaltending isn’t the only issue. Both teams are fighting to remain relevent and prove that they have what it takes. After losing a significant amount of talent in the offseason, Chicago has exceeded expectations in a very tightly contested Western Conference. On the other end, the Sharks want to show that they are more thasn just regular season superstars and look to make a significant push to a Stanley Cup this season. This would be quite a matchup to see in the first round.

Will it happen? It could. There is still a significant amount of position-swapping going on in the Western standings, and if San Jose vs Chicago doesn’t happen we would gladly take the other likely alternative of Chicago vs Detroit.

Matchup: Washington vs New York

The Capitals always draw fan fare because of the likes of Alexander Ovechkin and his dynamic goal-scoring abilities. But the real reason why this would be an appealing matchup is because it would come down to whoever executes their game plan better on any given night. Both teams are in the top-5 for the fewest amount of goals allowed per game on average and Henrik Lundquist is finally getting due credit this season as many are already lobbying for him to win the Vezina Trophy as the league’s best goaltender. The real kicker, however, is that the Rangers actually score, on average, more goals per game than the Capitals. This would be a very tightly contested matchup where the winner will be the team that shows up and brings their A-game every single night of the series. It might not be high scoring, but it would sure be fun to watch.

Will it happen? The 8-Ball says yes. If playoffs started today, this would be one of the opening round matchups in the East.

Matchup: Boston vs Montreal

There is clearly a disdain amongst both parties for one another in this divisional rivalry – something that could potentially go to the next level thanks to Zdeno Chara’s bone-crushing hit on Max Pacioretty two weeks ago. The good news is that Pacioretty very well may be back for the playoffs. The bad news is that Montreal now has a good cause to ride behind as they look to overthrow the Bruins for the division lead. The Bruins are feisty and the Canadiens are hungry after falling just short of a Stanley Cup Finals berth last season after losing to the Philadelphia Flyers in the Conference Finals. These two teams certainly do not like each other and a best-of-seven playoff series could really elevate this rivalry to the next level.

Will it happen? It’s highly likely. If playoffs started tonight, Boston would be taking on Montreal in one heck of a seven-game classic.

Matchup: Toronto vs Well…Anyone Really…

The Leafs haven’t skated into the postseason since the 2003-04 season where they made it to the 2nd round before being eliminated by the Philadelphia Flyers. Things haven’t looked good since then. But Brian Burke is working on turning things around for this storied franchise and a team that was almost counted out is now only five points out of a playoff spot. With eight games left, the Leafs will have to work hard to get points from teams like the Red Wings, Capitals, Bruins and Canadiens – teams all still left on their docket before the season comes to a close. Can they do it? It’s highly unlikely, but what a story it would be if they did…

Bauer Vapor APX Hockey Stick

Bauer Vapor APX Hockey Stick

Bauer Vapor APX Hockey Stick

Update: Head over to Pure Hockey to pick up your Bauer Vapor APX hockey stick! Enter the coupon code “hockeyworld” to save 10% on select items.

After the successful release of the Bauer APX skate, we knew it wouldn’t be long before a stick by the same name followed. Well, following the typical Fall release pattern for new sticks, we can expect to see the Bauer Vapor APX hockey stick hit retail store shelves in October of 2011.

More information is now coming out about the new Bauer Vapor APX hockey stick, and we’ve got some technical specifications to share with you. Some of the features you can expect on the Bauer Vapor APX hockey stick are outlined below:

“The Bauer Vapor APX hockey stick has been designed to have optimal balance and a quick release. It is ideal for the crafty player that excels in puck handling and quick-release shots.” – Bauer Hockey 2011 Holiday Catalog

Micro Feel II Shaft – The shaft will have rounded corners and double concave walls to allow you to get that comfortable feel and fit in your hands.

Intelli-Sense Shot Technology – The APX stick is designed with a dual kick point. Prior to 2009, Vapor sticks had a low kick-point which provided a quick release on wristers and snap shots. With the addition of a higher kick point, the Bauer Vapor APX stick can now provide a great kick on slapshots as well.

Patented Dual Density Blade Core – Similar to the blade of the Total One, the dual density blade core is the ultimate combination of balance, feel, power and performance. The blade contains an aramid reinforced epoxy core, which provides that tremendous feel for the puck upon receiving a pass or while stick handling. Additionally, the Aero Foam II core material will prevent blade deflection when shooting by providing torsional stiffness. This will increase accuracy and improve overall blade balance.

The Bauer Vapor APX hockey stick will come in both grip and clear version. The APX Griptac stick will feature a bit of white on it, where the clear APX hockey stick will be more black, grey and red. The traditional clear APX stick is definitely looking better in to me. I’m still sticking with my opinion that the APX stick is the best looking stick Bauer has ever designed.

The new stick will, of course, come in senior, intermediate and junior sizes. Each size will feature varying flexes and blade patterns. Retail stores will begin shipping the new Bauer Vapor APX sticks in October, so you won’t have to wait too long to get your mitts on one.

You can now buy the new Bauer Vapor APX hockey stick from Pure Hockey for $249.99.
