Evgeni Nabokov to Philly?

Goaltender Evgeni Nabokov of the San Jose Sharks may be switching conferences to play for the Eastern conference Champions Philadelphia Flyers. That is of course if he doesn’t jump the pond to go play for the Russian KHL league.

The Flyers, who struggled last year in net due to injuries and poor play, look to add a solid number one goalie. Nabokov at the older age of 34 brings concerns to some fans, however with a 2.39 goals against average and a .912 save percentage over his 10 year career should bring calm to the doubters.

As of right now the possibility is still a rumor. Yet like many rumors, there usually is some truth to the talk. The Flyers could definitely use a goalie who they could rely upon, but you still need to question why not go with goaltenders Brian Boucher or Michael Leighton who carried the team to the Stanley Cup Finals?

It will be interesting to see what all pans out, especially with Nabokov having an option to play in Russia. Throw in that the Flyers have to decide what to do with their current 3 goalies who are unrestricted free agents (Caron Sebastian, Ray Emery & Michael Leighton), the decision will become even more difficult.

If Nabokov is signed by the Flyers, expect either a trade involving Boucher to back up for the Sharks and the Flyers potentially signing a younger of the two Leighton, or Nabokov and Boucher splitting time (more common now in the new NHL) and a bidding war for Leighton who I believe to be coming into his prime.

The next question though is who will the Sharks goalie of tomorrow or goalie of this year be? Could there be a Calder trophy nominee Jimmy Howard waiting in the shadows? (I still think Howard should have won over Tyler Myers)

Tour Thor GX 7 Roller Hockey Skate

Update: The Tour Thor GX 7 skate is now available for pre-order at Inline Warehouse. Click here to order now.

We’ve already covered some of the new skates in the 2011 Tour line, such as the Tour Thor EX-1 and the Thor ZX-9. Coming in at a price point just behind the ZX-9 will be the brand new Tour Thor GX-7. Much like the higher end skates in the line-up, the GX-7 has been upgraded a bit with newer materials and structure.  But overall, it will be an improvement over mid price point Tour skate from years past. I’m not really digging the color scheme on this set up as much as the other skates in the line, but Tour skates are definitely known for their performance. If you go with this skate, you’ll surely be pleased.

Bruins actively shopping Savard

It appears as if there are some legs to the rumors that the Boston Bruins are looking to trade away their top-line center Marc Savard. Reports have surfaced that Savard, who signed a seven-year contract extension with the Bruins in December 2009, will waive his no-trade clause if it means being dealt to the Ottawa Senators or Toronto Maple Leafs – two teams that could have some legitimate interest in Savard’s services.

After drafting Tyler Seguin at the 2010 NHL Entry Draft this past weekend, the Bruins have too many bodies at center and need to clear a player in order to fit Seguin into the lineup. The 32-year-old Savard looks to be the odd man out. While some aspects of this move make sense, other aspects would make any fan scratch their head with wonder.

Savard’s seven-year contract extension carried with it a $4.2 million cap hit, which is quite reasonable for a center of his abilities. While somewhat injury-prone, Savard has managed 70 or more points in four of his last five seasons. In two of those seasons he registered 90 or more points. Last year, during a season in which Savard only played in 41 games, the gifted center still tallied 33 points – and that’s playing without a legitimate winger on his side.

For comparisons sake, Jason Spezza, who has registered similar numbers over the past several seasons, makes roughly $7 million a season. If Savard took a “hometown discount” to finish his career with the Bruins, it seems quite disrespectful that the Bruins would turn around and send Savard and his friendly cap hit elsewhere. It’s especially disrespectful when you consider that Bruins teammate Patrice Bergeron accounts for a slightly larger cap hit of $4.75 million per season and has been considerably less productive over the same time period. Granted, Bergeron has dealt with several significant injuries, but Savard is a proven commodity and a veteran player. Why not look to trade away Bergeron and keep Savard?

Well, the answer is in the numbers. Bergeron is younger at 24 years old and does have a huge offensive upside when he is healthy. Savard also makes for tasty trade bait with the numbers he is capable of producing offensively coupled with a low salary cap hit. The Bruins are currently $4.7 million under the cap. If they move Savard and his $4.2 million cap hit, as well as goaltender Tim Thomas and his $5 million cap hit (which they are definitely expected to do), then the Bruins all of a sudden have roughly $13 million to bring in a scoring winger or general scoring depth on the wings with money leftover to replace Dennis Wideman on defense. Heck, Boston management is probably licking their chops at the thought of being able to make a legitimate offer to unrestricted free agent Ilya Kovalchuk.

If a trade is to happen, the Maple Leafs would seem like a logical destination for Savard for several reasons. First, Savard has a history playing with Phil Kessel. They have made magic together before and I doubt that Maple Leafs GM Brian Bruke could resist the temptation to pair them together again. Burke has also stated several times over the past few weeks that he wants to add offense this summer. Tons and tons of offense. Well, a healthy Savard paired with Kessel could bring about 80-90 points out of Savard. Second, the Leafs are still looking to trade Kaberle and, as I’ve already stated, the Bruins will look to replace Wideman. Could a Kaberle-for-Savard deal be in the works? It would seem mutually beneficial to both teams.

With the free agent frenzy beginning in just a few short days, if there is a deal to be done expect it to happen soon. Both teams involved in the trade will want to hash out the details and get their ducks in a row before free agency begins so that they can figure out what pieces they still need to put into place this summer.

Teams take straightforward approach during first round of NHL draft

While rumors were spreading across the net ranging from the incredibly plausible to the out-right laughable in regards to how the 2010 NHL Entry Draft would sort itself out, in reality things seemed to occur in a fairly straightforward fashion last night for most teams – beginning with the number one overall selection by the Edmonton Oilers.

Taylor Hall, of the Windsor Spitfire in the Ontario Hockey League, became the number one overall selection of the 2010 draft last night. There was certainly a lot of speculation regarding who Edmonton would select, but in the end they saw an incredibly passionate and intelligent player in Hall that they couldn’t pass up.

“He’s such an imposing young man,” said Oilers general manager Steve Tambellini. “I don’t think I’ve ever met a more focused, competitive athlete. He was the best player on a good team for a long time.”

Despite recent struggles for the Oilers, Hall is happy to be joining an organization with such a rich hockey history and hopes to lend a hand while the team looks to rebuild.

“They’re such a great franchise with so much history behind them,” Hall said. “With the five (Stanley) Cups they won, it will mean a lot to me to join their organization and hopefully bring another one up there.”

The Boston Bruins, with the second overall selection, took Tyler Seguin of the Plymouth Whalers of the Ontario Hockey League. Seguin has drawn several comparisons to players like Steve Yzerman and Joe Sakic and will certainly be a huge asset to the Bruins organization.

The Florida Panthers were also a busy team during the first round of the draft. Not only did they select defenseman Erik Grudbranson as the third overall selection, but they traded away defenseman Keith Ballard and prospect Victor Oreskovich to the Vancouver Canucks in exchange for Steve Bernier, Michael Grabner and the 25th pick in the draft.

In case you missed it, here are the rest of the draft results from the first round last night:

A few interesting notes on the draft selections:

- While rumors hit the net hard regarding Kaberle moving for a first round pick, or perhaps even Ottawa moving Spezza on draft day, none of those rumors came into fruition. In fact, Toronto was not able to obtain a first-round draft choice after trading it to Boston (2nd overall) in the Phil Kessel trade last summer.

- Defenseman Cam Fowler fell to Anaheim at the 12th pick. Two defenseman were chosen ahead of Fowler. Many believed Fowler to be a top-5 draft pick this year and expect him to have an incredibly successful career.

- Typically left with low draft selections, the Wings usually resort to taking small, speedy forwards who they can bulk up and add size and strength to during stints in the minors. This year, the Detroit Red Wings were able to add a forward with some size and grit in Riley Sheahan as they drafted at the 21st position – their second-highest selection in 19 years. “I’m a big player and I like to use my size to my advantage,’’ Sheahan said abut his abilities, which the Wings organization echoed. “I’m a pass  first, shoot second kind of player. I like to make my teammates better. I can be responsible in my own end. I think I can be a leader in the dressing room and that I have the respect of my teammates.’’ (Note to Red Wings brass: Please learn how to say the last name of your selections before making said selection).

- Goalie Jack Campbell went to the Dallas Stars as the 11th choice. He was pegged a sa mid-round draft choice, but there appeared to be no real immediate need for many teams to grab a goalie in the first round. Dallas seems like a good fit. The Stars will part ways with longtime franchise goaltender Marty Turco this summer as he is an unrestricted free agent, and with goaltender Kari Lehtonen signed for an additional three years, this gives Campbell time to get acclimated to the pro game in the minors and perhaps come and serve as a backup or even compete with Lehtonen for the starting job depending on how his development comes along.

Trade rumors heat up as GM’s prepare for draft

The days preceding the 2010 NHL Entry Draft have been some of the busiest in recent years in terms of trades and trade rumors. Now that the draft is only a few short hours away from beginning, trade rumors are heating up as general managers around the league look to get the most bang for their buck and do whatever it takes to make their team a contender. And it appears as if nobody is safe from the trading block. Here is a quick rundown of some of the last-minute rumors going around the net that could come into fruition before or during the draft tonight:

- It appears as if several teams are offering their first-round draft picks. The Florida Panthers (#3), Columbus Blue Jackets (#4), New York Islanders (#5), Atlanta Thrashers (#8), Florida Panthers (#15) and the Phoenix Coyotes (#22) are all said to be fielding offers for their first-round draft picks. If any of these teams do give up their selections, don’t expect them to come cheap. Several of these teams are looking to rebuild and they will want promising prospects or a package of later draft picks. Florida, Columbus or New York may even want a roster player plus prospects in exchange for their selection.

- Tomas Kaberle talks continue and will continue through the draft until he is dealt. The number of interested teams appears to be in the double digits, but the number of serious offers may only be around 5. While I would be very surprised of Kaberle wasn’t moved tonight, it’s being said that Toronto GM Brian Burke is asking for a lot in return and some teams may not be willing to give up what Burke is asking for. When push comes to shove, I expect Kaberle to be moved tonight.

- Dallas Stars forward Mike Ribeiro has recently come into play. Rumors state that inquiries have been made about Ribeiro’s availability, but Dallas isn’t actively pushing to unload Ribeiro, who carries with him a cap hit of $5 million per season.

- Stars center Brad Richards has also been linked to the New York Rangers as a possible center for Marion Gaborik. Richards carries a hefty price tag of $7.8 million, but the Rangers may be willing to pay.

- Senators forward Jason Spezza has been the center of trade talks for a few weeks now, but it appears as if talks have died down for Ottawa’s top center. With a hefty cap hit of $7 million per season, many teams may not be able to absorb that kind of salary. Spezza could be moved tonight, but my guess is that he is still a Senator by the end of the draft and that talks will heat up next week before free agency begins. Spezza’s no trade clause kicks in next Thursday at the beginning of the free agency period.

- Boston Bruins center Marc Savard has recently appeared in trade rumors. The general feeling is that Edmonton will take taylor Hall with the number one overall pick, leaving Boston to take Tyler Seguin at number two. This will leave the Bruins overloaded at center. They will most likely try to move a center in the near future. I highly doubt that Savard will be that center, however.Teams rumored to be interested in Savard are the New York Rangers and Calgary Flames.

- Reports state that the Florida Panthers have decided to take defenseman Erik Gudbranson with their number three overall pick (if that pick is not traded).

- Flyers center Jeff Carter continues to appear in trade rumors. Philadelphia needs a strong goaltender next season and Carter may be the sacrifice to get what they covet. Carter would certainly be a welcome addition to any team needing a young, goal-scoring center. Carter is set to earn $5 million this season and will be a restricted free agent at season’s end.

In short, it appears as if the rumor mill has either gone crazy with wishful thinking or  simply no player, no matter how gifted or well-liked, is safe from being traded. While I don’t think tonight’s draft will be as crazy as some rumor mongers are making it out to be, I certainly believe that some moves will be made and that at least one big player will get traded before the night is out. Draft starts in roughly two hours. Grab a pizza and a beer and enjoy.

Lord Stanley to ride in Gay Parade

Brendan Burke standing near Lord Stanley. Brendan, an openly gay male, recently passed away this year in a fatal car accident.

The Stanley Cup will ride in it’s first ever gay themed event at Chicago’s Gay Pride Parade. The Chicago Gay Hockey Association extended an invite to the Chicago Blackhawks and the team gladly accepted.

The Cup will be accompanied by defense-man Brent Sopel of the Blackhawks now Atlanta Thrasher along with his wife. Sopel, once playing under General Manager Brian Burke, wishes to pay tribute to Burke’s son Brendan whom lost his life in a car accident earlier this year.

Brendan Burke was a recently open gay male before he lost his life to a tragic accident. In a time where gay rights are still not on par to those of heterosexuals, it is important for sports teams to lead the way and show their appreciation of their fans, regardless of sexual orientation. Hopefully events such as these can assist in paving the way for an equal and better world.

The Chicago Cubs also will be present at the parade, sporting a vehicle decorated in brick and ivy design reminiscent of the classic Wrigley Field outfield wall.

Previewing the NHL Draft

2010-nhl-draftTomorrow night is the first night of the 2010 NHL Entry Draft. There is a lot of hype and speculation as to what player Edmonton will take. Will they take OHL superstars Taylor Hall or Tyler Seguin? Will they shock everyone and go European with Mikael Granlund? This draft looks very deep at all positions. This means teams at the top to middle of the draft will have the opportunity to draft players who can contribute to the big clubs in the near future. Here’s a ranking of the top players at each position, as well as some information on them.

Goalie: Jack Campbell

Country: USA

09-10 team: US NTDP

Age: 18

Info: Campbell was ranked as the #2 North American goalie by NHL Central Scouting (NHLCS) going into the draft. I think of him higher  than Calvin Pickard because of the resume he has put together the last two seasons. He won the best goalkeeper award at the 2010 World U18 Championships, as well as winning the 2009 and 2010 World U18 Championship. He also backstopped Team USA when they defeated Canada in the 2010 World Junior Championships.

Draft Projection: Middle first round. Expect him to be first goalie taken.

Defense: Cam Fowler

Country: USA

09-10 team: Windsor Spitfires

Age: 18

Info: Fowler has had the opportunity to spend a lot of time in the Windsor-Detroit area. He was born in Windsor, but moved to the Detroit suburbs as a child. He was also the first overall pick in the OHL Priority Draft two consecutive seasons. The first was in 2007 when Kitchener drafted him. He was debating between the OHL or college hockey with Notre Dame, but decided to play in the USNTDP. He was picked the following year by Windsor and signed with the Spits. Like Campbell, Fowler is decorated with gold medals in international competition. He is ranked #5 in North America and the top American forward by NHLCS.

Draft Projection: Top-Five. It’s unlikely, but if he slips to Tampa at #6, expect the first pick of the Steve Yzerman era to start at the blue line.

Defense: Erik Gudbranson

Country: Canada

09-10 team: Kingston Frontenacs

Age: 18

Info: Rated fourth overall in North American skaters by the NHLSC, this 6’3″, 201 lbs hard hitting defenseman didn’t put up the best numbers last season because he missed nearly half of last season battling Mono. But when he did play, he contributed with 23 points in 41 games. Scouts report that if his offense matched his hard-hitting ability, he would be a star for years to come. In Kingston’s first round series with Brampton, he recorded one goal and two assists in a seven-game series defeat. He has the smarts needed to play defense at the NHL level, as he won the OHL Scholastic Player of the Year this past season.

Draft projection: 3rd-4th. He draws comparisons to Chris Pronger and Dion Phaneuf. He’s perhaps the best player in the draft who’s first name doesnt begin with Taylor or Tyler.

Right Wing: Brett Connolly

Country: Canada

09-10 team: Prince George Cougars

Age: 18

Info: The only player from outside the USNTDP or the OHL, Connolly first appeared on scout’s radar in 2008-09 when he won the WHL and CHL’s Rookie of the Year honors when he scored 30 goals, 30 assists in 65 games. His stock dropped this season because of a nagging hip injury that kept him out most of the season. When he did return for the Cougars, he scored 19 points in 16 games.

Draft projection: He can go as early as third to Florida or as late as sixth to Tampa. Don’t the surprised if the NY Islanders try to form a Kane-Toews combination with Connolly and Tavares.

Center: Tyler Seguin

Country: Canada

09-10 team: Plymouth Whalers

Age: 18

Info: Just like the Twilight diehards who are torn between Team Jacob or Team Edward, hockey geeks like myself are torn between Team Tyler or Team Taylor for the #1 overall pick. Who will Edmonton take? Here’s why they should take Seguin: He won awards for highest scorer (alongside Hall) and Most Outstanding Player in the OHL over Hall. Scoring 106 points in a 63-game season is nothing to laugh at. Those numbers are more like along the lines of NHL 10 for the XBox. His style has been compared by scouts as a young Steve Yzerman, so no matter if the Oilers or Bruins take him, they are in the drivers seat for having a franchise-type player for years to come.

Draft projection: Toronto fans are shooting themselves. They could of had the #2 pick but they sent that to Boston in the Phil Kessel . Boston, already a playoff-caliber team can only be better with the pick of Seguin. I’m thinking (and so are mock draft experts) that the Oilers are leaning towards Hall, so Boston will land Seguin at #2.

Left Wing: Taylor Hall

Country: Canada

09-10 team: Windsor Spitfires

Age: 18

Info: Consider Hall to be just as good as Seguin, but only on a better team. Hall was on the best team in the OHL for the last two seasons, as well as the best junior team in all of Canada as the Spits won the Memorial Cup the last two seasons. Hall is such a hot commodity, he was drafted last season by a team in the KHL. His odds are very slim of playing there as they draft age is 1 year prior to the NHL. More decorated than Seguin, Hall starred on the Canadian World Junior Championship team last season when he recorded 12 points in six games in route to the silver medal.

Draft projection: #1. There’s no way Edmonton won’t pass up on an Alberta-born player that has the superstar potential as Hall.

The 2010 NHL Entry Draft will be held at Staples Center in Los Angeles. Hockey fans can watch the action tomorrow night at 7:00 p.m. Eastern on Versus.

Chicago agrees to send Byfuglien, Sopel to Atlanta

The Chicago Blackhawks appear to have solved some of their impending salary cap woes with one quick, decisive move.

The newly crowned Stanley Cup champions apparently have a deal in place with the Atlanta Thrashers that will send Dustin Byfuglien, Brent Sopel, Ben Eager and Akim Aliu to Atlanta in exchange for Marty Reasoner and Jeremy Morin. Chicago will also receive Atlanta’s 24th overall draft pick at the upcoming NHL Entry Draft as well as their 54th overall pick.

Rumors have swirled for several days that Byfuglien could become one of the first cap casualties from the Blackhawks.  The 25-year-old originally started off as a defenseman, but soon showed a lot of promise on forward and emerged as a star in the eyes of many during Chicago’s postseason run at the Stanley Cup just a few weeks ago. During 22 playoff games with the Blackhawks, Byfuglien tallied 11 goals and five assists – including several game-winning gems. He drew parallel comparisons to players like Ryan Smythe and Tomas Holmstrom for his strong net-front presence.

While this trade gives Chicago some wiggle room, they may not be done moving players around just yet. Once this trade goes through, Chicago will be just shy of $6 million under the cap, but the team only has 13 players signed for next season. Six million isn’t a lot of room to bring in roughly 8 players – especially if the team intends to resign restricted free agent goaltender Antti Niemi. Niemi is due for a considerable raise from the $800,000 he made last year. Patrick Sharp and Kris Versteeg are also receiving heavy interest from other clubs around the NHL.
