Sharks look to oust Red Wings as Round 2 opens in San Jose

After disposing of the Colorado Avalanche in 6 games in the opening round of the 2010 Stanley Cup Playoffs, the San Jose Sharks know they have a tough test ahead of themselves when they meet the Detroit Red Wings in the opening game of their second-round series tonight.

“They have tremendous puck possession and they don’t seem to get too rattled ever,” said Sharks defenseman Rob Blake.

San Jose has a history of being “choke artists” in the playoffs. Last year the Sharks came into the playoffs as the top seeded team in the West, much like they did this year, only to lose in the first round to a very tough Anaheim Ducks opponent. While the Sharks were able to breath a sigh of relief after getting out of the first round, they may have a much bigger hurdle to jump in the Red Wings if they intend to make their way to the Stanley Cup Finals. Detroit has an arsenal of tools at their disposal, but their experience in the postseason may be their best asset against San Jose, and the Sharks know they can’t take Detroit too lightly.

“(Detroit is) a veteran squad that has been there before,” said Manny Maholtra. “They have experience and that always counts for something.”

Does San Jose Have What it Takes?

As one of the best line combinations during the regular season, Joe Thornton, Patrick Marleau and Dany Heatley were notably absent in most games of the opening series against Colorado. The trio of superstars only managed ten points combined in the first round – and only one of those points was a goal. This is the story of the Sharks in recent years. One of the best teams in the regular season fails to elevate their game to the next level needed for a long playoff run. Pavelski, Setoguchi and Clowe were able to take the reigns and lead San Jose to victory in the first round, but how long will that trend last? Especially against Detroit’s deep defense? San Jose is offensively deep and talented in their own right with similar players on defense who are more than capable of chipping in offensively, but Detroit could have their way with San Jose if the Sharks’ top players fail to appear again.

Does Detroit Have What it Takes?

Phoenix took Detroit to seven games in a hard-hitting, physical series. Not to mention the travel that Detroit had to endure as part of the series. At times the Red Wings looked old and rusted, while at other times the team looked incredibly hungry for another shot at the Cup. Game seven was one of the best performances by the Red Wings in recent memory. They were quick to get on Phoenix players on the boards, they got in shooting lanes and Jimmy Howard stood on his head as a bonafide NHL superstar. So which Detroit Red Wings team made the trip to San Jose? Game seven Red Wings who looked poised for a long playoff run or Game 6 Red Wings who needed wheelchairs to get them around on the ice? Jimmy Howard needs to be the better netminder in this series, which is a daunting task when his opponent is none other than Evgeni Nabokov – a player that only had 44 wins and a 2.43 goals against average in the regular season. Detroit needs to be strong on their special teams as well. Their penalty kill was up and down during the Phoenix series and their power play proved to be a difference maker in the end. Detroit’s best players like Pavel Datsyuk and Henrik Zetterberg need to be their best at both ends of the ice of Detroit wants to advance to the Conference Finals.

What went wrong in Washington

After accumulating 121 points and steamrolling to the President’s Trophy in the regular season, most hockey fans wondered if any team had what it took to bring down Alexander Ovechkin and the almighty Washington Capitals. Certainly nobody believed that Washington could be ousted by the lowly Montreal Canadiens, a team that came into the playoffs as the eighth seed with inconsistent goaltending and a season full of up-and-down play. But the only thing that matters is that you pull it together for the playoffs, and evidently the Capitals got more than they bargained for with the Canadiens. It took seven games, but the Candiens became that team that brought Washington to their knees as they came back from a 3-1 series deficit to beat Washington 2-1 in Game 7 to win the series on the road.

2548034.binSo what went wrong with the storied season full of high expectations for the Washington Capitals? Certainly it won’t take long for the players to begin asking those questions of themselves. A team that had all the talent in the world failed to make it out of the first round. Where did it all go wrong for the Caps?

For starters, any hockey pundit will tell you that your best players have to step up and be your best players in the playoffs. In that regard, Ovechkin and Center Nicklas Backstrom did their part. Ovechkin tallied ten points (five goals, five assist) throughout the series while center Nicklas Backstrom chipped in another five goals and four assists for nine points. But where was Alexander Semin during the first round? Semin all but disappeared as soon as the playoffs started. Throughout the seven game series, Semin managed to only nab two assists and finish with an even plus/minus rating.

But for as much as your best players need to be the best, your secondary scorers need to come through and play at a top level as well. In this regard, Washington failed miserably. In addition to Semin, players like Brooks Laich, Brendan Morrison and Tomas Fleischmann were all notably absent from the scoresheet. Defenseman Mike Green contributed zero goals and three assists and was only plus-1 in the series. For a player that had 76 points  and was plus-39 in the regular season, that’s a big drop off in production. Washington also struggled in the power play throughout the entire series. In fact, the team only  scored one goal on 32 power play attempts. The team failed to take advantage of key situations and make Montreal pay for their mistakes.

At times, the Caps also looked like a team that lacked hunger and focus. Perhaps it’s a lack of leadership, but the team sometimes played like they expected to coast through the first round on their good looks and skill alone. That’s not how it works in the playoffs. Playoff games are won with effort and hard work at both ends of the rink and on all areas of the ice.

The fact is that the Montreal Canadiens out worked and out played the Washington Capitals in the final three games of the series. Hard work wins hockey games in the NHL, and the Canadiens had the veteran leadership and the work ethic to bring down the almighty Washington Capitals. You also have to give credit to Montreal goaltender Jaroslav Halak who came through and claimed his position as the man between the pipes in Montreal. He had a few shaky performances, but he regrouped and is a huge reason why the Canadiens are advancing to the next round.

The Washington Capitals came into these playoffs with high hopes and high expectations. That all came crashing down in just seven games at the hands of the Montreal Canadiens. Over the next several days the players will have their last team meetings and begin cleaning out their lockers, some unsure of their future status with the team. So where did it all go wrong for the Caps? That will surely be the question that haunts the players until camps begin again in September.

Coyotes moving Forward in Game 7

“…you’ve got to ask yourself one question: Do I feel lucky? Well, do ya, punk?” – Dirty Harry

What was perceived pure luck at the beginning of the season, the Phoenix Coyotes have not only turned heads, but turned people into fans. A story that will rival that of the Bad News Bears, a team that had nothing, back against the wall, franchise going under, is now fighting in game 7 of the 2009 – 2010 NHL Playoffs against the the powerhouse Detroit Red Wings.

The two teams come into this series with many different strengths and weaknesses, but all the same, they come in wanting to win. Or so it seems.

I’ve seen many games in my day, both watching and playing, and I know a team when they are hungry. To me, the Detroit Red Wings are not hungry, they lack the needed drive that their opponents the Coyote’s have. You beg to differ perhaps? Matt reminded us all of the “Doan Face”, an image of pure craziness and pure intensity. The Red Wings, they don’t have that.

In game 6 of the series at the Red Wing’s home ice of the Joe Louis Arena, the Wing’s got off to a bad start. Defenseman Brad Stuart coughed up the puck on one of the most dumb moment hockey I have seen in a while. Trust me people, playing with the other writers on this blog, I’ve seen some dumb moment hockey before. The lackluster, dumb hockey continued throughout the game for the Wings.

Looking at the other end of the ice, the Phoenix Coyotes scored 3 power play goals, and to put a cherry on top, they also scored a shorthanded goal within the first 5 minutes of the game. In the corners the Coyotes were out hustling the Red Wings. They were first to the puck, toughest on the puck, and overall played harder.

Perhaps I am being a little harsh on the Red Wings, maybe, maybe not. Matt and I may agree that the Coyotes will win in game 7, but we do disagree on one thing; it is not that Detroit will be bad enough to lose, but that the Phoenix Coyotes are a better team. The passing of the flame starts tonight, as the old, tired, Detroit Red Wings will learn that being a slow skating puck position team is not what will earn you a win, it is hard work of every shift and the faster open ice game that will advance you in the playoffs.

I look forward to wearing my Coyote’s hat after tonight without the ridicule of my family, friends and neighbors.

Eddie On Why Red Wings Will Win Game 7

In less than 9 hours, the Red Wings and Coyotes will be playing game 7 of the first round series. I believe the Red Wings will win the game for a few reasons.

  • This crew of Red Wings haven’t faced a game 7 in the first round

This isn’t your father’s Red Wings. While there are a lot of old faces like Maltby, Holmstrom, Lidstrom, etc. This Red Wings crew doesn’t want the ride to end. Should they lose this game, who knows how many more opportunities the aforementioned players will get to win another Stanley Cup?

  • More pressure is on the home team

As we saw in last year’s Stanley Cup Final against Pittsburgh, more pressure was on the Wings because they were the home team and was expected to win. I believe the Red Wings simply tried too hard to win that game.

  • In a seven game series, the better team will win

The Wings have no more excuses to use. They were hurt most of the regular season and now they are healthy in the playoffs. They are the best team in the league after the Olympic break and it all comes down to one game. 60 minutes hockey to determine if they play another day or go home. I still believe from top to bottom they are the better team.

Detroit’s Keys to Victory

  • They have to score first

As the road team, the main key is to score first and score early. In similar fashion to what Phoenix did in game six, after Detroit failed on the string of power plays, Phoenix took advantage of a turnover and scored a shorthanded goal. The Red Wings have to get the first goal to quiet the Phoenix crowd and make the Coyotes play from behind.

  • Get goals from B-List players Johan Fanzen and Dan Cleary

Franzen and Cleary have been studs the last two years in the playoffs. This year, Franzen has lived up his billing while Cleary has recorded 0′s across the stat line in six games. A late goal by either one of those would be big for the Red Wings to advance.

  • Finish in Regulation

A game 7 is like a 60-minute overtime game. Make it sudden death and the smallest turnover, deflection, icing call, or lost face off in the defensive zone can end your season. In the game is tied with five minutes left in regulation, that’s when sudden death hockey begins.

Jimmy Howard just has to give the Red Wings a chance to win in game seven. Howard cannot afford to allow any soft goals tonight.

Jimmy Howard just has to give the Red Wings a chance to win in game seven. Howard cannot afford to allow any soft goals tonight.

  • Protect Jimmy Howard

The defense has to clear out the front of the net for any rebounds or second chances Phoenix can have. The blueliners for Detroit have to put on a performance seen in games four and five. They have to let Jimmy Howard see the puck and then proceed to clear it from the slot or setup a breakout in transition. Not to mention that Phoenix has good defensemen themselves who move the puck just as well as the Detroit defensemen.

  • Stay out of the penalty box

Just like we saw in games one and six, the Red Wings have to stay out of the penalty box. The Red Wings failed to allow a power play goal between games two and five, but allowed Phoenix to light the lamp several times in game six. They cannot afford to put the game in the officials hands, they have to take it themselves.

Do Not Try This At Home: Flying Octopi

During the Red Wings-Coyotes series, we have seen plenty of Red Wings fans in Phoenix during the television broadcast. We have also seen octopi thrown on the ice in Glendale. During game 2 of the series, some daring Detroit fans not only took one for the team and got arrested/thrown in jail because they threw octopi on the ice. I’m most impressed at how they got the entire thing on tape.

Phoenix Coyotes Win Game 7, Here’s Why

Coyotes captain Shane Doan scares off opponents with the Doan face

Coyotes captain Shane Doan scares off opponents with the Doan face

While I’m not on the Phoenix Coyote bandwagon, like EB, and I root for my hometown Detroit Red Wings, I just don’t think they have what it takes to win Game 7 in Glendale tonight.

This series has been very well coached from the beginning. Some errors have been made here and there, but overall you have, arguably, the league’s best coach in Mike Babcock, going against a sure thing for coach of the year in Dave Tippett. The biggest difference I notice between the two, is how their respective players show up for every game. While the Coyotes are playing their hearts out every night, some Red Wings appear to only show up when they want to.

Mike Babcock often says he loves the playoffs because it keeps you honest. His team knows what they need to do, but lately its been a challenge for them to actually get on to the ice and do it. On the other hand, Dave Tippet’s squad knows how to bring it each and every game. They are playing high energy, physical, playoff style hockey. Plus, not only are they playing to keep their season alive, but they’re playing for their coach too. Somewhere along the line, this seems to have been lost for the Red Wings.

While coaching isn’t everything, some of the philosophies remain strong. Babcock is also a fan of telling the media that the Red Wings best players need to be their best players. This means guys like Datsyuk, Zetterberg, Franzen, Lidstrom, and so on, all need to step up. When the only guys showing any urgency are players like Helm, Abdelkader, Eaves, and Miller, you have to question who is playing playoff hockey? They may not be all stars, but every shift they go out there and lay everything on the table. The same cannot be said about the Red Wings big names recently.

When it comes down to game time, the players decide everything. Right now, everything is going the way of the Phoenix Coyotes. Tonight’s home crowd is going to be rowdy, full of energy, and ready to celebrate a series clinching victory. Ilya Bryzgalov will be in a position to lead his team to victory. His all out effort, and save after save performance will give his players and the home crowd a giant boost from the get go. On top of that, the strong defense and penalty killing we saw in Game 6 will return tonight.

It’s not so much that Phoenix will be good enough to win, but more or less that Detroit will be bad enough to lose. Rookie goaltender Jimmy Howard faces a lot of controversy after calling the Coyotes latest victory “lucky.” In his first playoff series, and first game 7, I don’t think he has what it takes just yet. He has been shaky, at best, in four out of six games thus far. While he will come to play tonight, a soft goal or two will lead to the ultimate demise of the Red Wings Stanley Cup dreams.

Prediction: Ilya Bryzgalov outplays Jimmy Howard in a battle of the netminders, while the Coyotes defense and penalty kill will stifle the Red Wings once again. A close 3-2 game down the stretch will be sealed by an empty netter for the Coyotes, who will advance to play San Jose in round two. Final score, 4-2, and the Doan face haunts the Red Wings all summer.

Bauer Supreme Gear Updates: One60 LE Skate, One80 Stick and More

We have some new Bauer gear updates to share with you, so I’ll get right to it.

First, in addition to the blacked out Bauer Supreme One100 LE, we will also be seeing another limited edition skate. This one, the Bauer Supreme One60 LE, will feature the same blacked out look as the One100 LE, but at a more affordable price point. This is good news to those who like the blacked out look, but don’t want to shell out the money for a top of the line skate. The One60 LE will only cost $209.99, and is available for pre-order from Ice Warehouse now. The skates will be shipped October 15th.

Next is the new stick line. We’re hearing that, unlike the skate line, the Bauer Supreme TotalOne Stick will actually be the successor to the One95. Beyond that, the Bauer Supreme One80 stick is said to look pretty slick with a color scheme similar to the One100 LE skates. The stick will have look similar to the TotalOne, but will instead be black with white lines. Hopefully they go for that same slick black matte finish that we saw on the One95.

We’re also hearing that prototypes of next years Vapor X:40, which we can assume will carry a different name when the product is released, will also feature a nice blacked out look. My guess is that they will use the traditional white holder, however, and keep the black holder for limited edition releases.

If you’re a roller hockey player, don’t hold your breath for a refresh on the Bauer roller hockey line. They are going to stick with the same current line-up we see today. However, we will see a new 2011 line for the Mission brand in the fall. Last year, we we’re able to get a peak at the 2010 Mission catalog in July, so expect the same this summer. Hopefully we’ll be able to get some news and sneak peaks at the gear before then, so check back.

Zdeno Chara No Instigator Suspension

Boston Bruins Captain Zdeno Chara will not be suspended after receiving a minor penalty for instigating, a major for fighting and a game misconduct at the end of the game against the Buffalo Sabres.

The initial rule is as follows:

47.12 Instigator in Final Five Minutes of Regulation Time (or Anytime in Overtime) – A player or goalkeeper who is deemed to be the instigator of an altercation in the final five (5) minutes of regulation time or at any time in overtime shall be assessed an instigator minor penalty, a major penalty for fighting, and a game misconduct penalty (see 47.22).

The NHL rescinded the suspension on Saturday under Rule 47.22:

47.22 Fines and Suspensions – Instigator in Final Five Minutes of Regulation Time (or Anytime in Overtime) - A player or goalkeeper who is deemed to be the instigator of an altercation in the final five (5) minutes of regulation time or at anytime in overtime, shall automatically be suspended for one game. The Director of Hockey Operations will review every such incident and may rescind the suspension based on a number of criteria. The criteria for the review shall include, but not limited to, the score, previous incidents, etc. The length of suspension will double for each subsequent offense. This suspension shall be served in addition to any other automatic suspensions a player may incur for an accumulation of three or more instigator penalties.

Emotions are running high on both sides pertaining to the incident, Buffalo fans demanding a suspension while Boston fans in favor of the Director of Hockey Operations Colin Campbell’s decision.

After reviewing the play myself, I fell the decision to not suspend Chara is indeed the right call. However, upon my own feelings pertaining to the rule (Last year Stanley Cup Playoffs as Evgeni Malkin instigates a fight with Henrik Zetterberg), I feel that it should be more black and white. Any fight instigated within the last 5 minutes of the game should automatically be deemed a game misconduct for the following game. With such a black and white approach, this would disallow for the NHL’s biased suspension policy, one that allows for “known” players to dodge accountability for their actions.

Eric Belanger Pulls Out His Own Tooth

I dont think I’ve ever seen anything like this. In the first period of last nights game between the Capitals and Canadians, Eric Belanger takes a high stick to the face and goes down immediately. Later, on the bench, Belanger pulls some gauze out of his mouth, reaches in, and pulls out his own tooth. Oh yeah, and he went on to finish the game.

Bauer Supreme One100 LE Limited Edition Skate

I’m truly impressed with what Bauer has done with their products since being sold by Nike. After all the recent hype surrounding the Total One skates and stick, we’re now seeing another exciting product making the rounds. This skate, the Bauer Supreme One100 LE, is a limited edition skate which is all blacked out. They even feature black Tuuk holders. The darkness of the skate is eye catching, but it still contains all the same features as the original One100. I wouldn’t mind being seen in a pair of these at the rink. We’ll keep you updated as to when these skates hit retail stores, but for now, take a look at this sneak peak.

Bauer Supreme One100 LE Limited Edition Skate

Bauer Supreme One100 LE Limited Edition Skate

Update: The Bauer Supreme One100 LE will be available from Ice Warehouse on October 15th. It will be available for pre-order prior to that.

Update 2: You can now pre-order the Bauer Supreme One100 LE. The skates will run you $629.99 from Ice Warehouse.

The skates will indeed carry the same features as the original One100, with the addition of a couple. Besides being blacked out, the skates will also feature a “retro-tan” liner which you can see in the above image. It is made from a hydrophibic clarino synthetic leather and will definitely give the One100 LE a pretty unique look.
