Seven storylines to follow during the final seven games of the NHL season

Playoffs are merely two weeks away with about seven games remaining on the regular season schedule for most franchises. Still, a lot can happen in seven games. As the season winds down and teams gear up for playoffs, here are seven story lines that you might not want to miss as an NHL fan:

7.) Can the Avs Hang On? The Colorado Avalanche are one of two teams that defied preseason expectations this year and found themselves in the top half of the Western Conference for a good portion of the season despite being picked to finish near-dead last. However, over the last month or so as teams jockey for playoff positioning, the Avs have found themselves the odd team out after being leapfrogged by the Detroit Red Wings, Nashville Predators and Los Angeles Kings in the standings. Can the Avs hang on to the eighth seed in the West with Calgary hot on their tail? With a young core full of stars in the making, the Avalanche have a lot to build on regardless of how this season plays out.

6.) Where Will the Leafs End Up? The Leafs got themselves a great player when they traded for Phil Kessel in the offseason. Kessel has 30 goals and 54 points in 65 games for the Maple Leafs this year. However, in order to acquire the sniper from Boston, the Leafs had to trade away several draft picks – including a first-round pick in this summer’s draft. Right now, that draft picks looks to be a number two overall pick for the Bruins. That could mean nabbing either Taylor Hall or Tyler Seguin, the two highly-touted prospects expected to be taken as the first two overall players in the draft this year. Both players are having incredible seasons with over 100 points in the OHL. But, at 69 points, the Leafs are only three points behind the Tampa Bay Lightning, Florida Panthers and New York Islanders. With a playoff spot out of the picture, the Leafs are focusing on a strong finish to ensure a lower pick for the Bruins. Who will get the better end of the Kessel deal? We’ll see in two weeks.

5.) Outside Looking In: West - The Calgary Flames are the only real threat in the Western Conference outside of the playoff picture but looking to make a strong push at the end. With 85 points on the season, the Flames are four points behind the eighth seeded Colorado Avalanche. The St. Louis Blues are a long shot for a playoff spot with 83 points. Calgary has a tough schedule remaining, but they were able to take down the top-seeded Washington Capitals last weekend to keep their playoff hopes alive. Anything can happen in the NHL at playoff time.

4.) Outside Looking In: East – The playoff picture is much tighter in the East for the bubble teams. Only four points separate the tenth-seeded New York Rangers (78 points) from the sixth-seeded Philadelphia Flyers (82 points), which makes the remaining seven games that much more important for the teams fighting for the last few playoff spots in the West. The Boston Bruins and Montreal Canadiens each have 82 points and sit in the seventh and eighth seeds respectively while the Atlanta Thrashers occupy the ninth seed with 80 points. However, the Canadiens have lost three in a row while the Atlanta Thrashers are playing some good hockey in the ninth seed and could pass the Canadiens with a few more strong performances. These teams are all fighting for their playoff lives, and it may come down to the last day of the season to see who’s in and who’s out in the East.

3.) Does Chicago Have a #1 Netminder? The Chicago Blackhawks, a perennial favorite to go to the Stanley Cup Finals, shelled out big bucks a few years back for goaltender Cristobal Huet. Needless to say, he hasn’t lived up to expectations. In 46 starts for the Blackhawks this season, Huet has a 2.50 goals against average and a .895 save percentage. While going head-to-head with backup goalie Antti Niemi in recent weeks, Huet seems to be doing everything in his power to give up the starting job going into playoffs. Niemi has better numbers than Huet with a .909 save percentage and 2.31 goals against average, but has only won three of his eight starts in March. However, two of those starts were shutouts. Regardless, neither goalie has embraced the starting job like a playoff goalie needs to. Will a starting goalie emerge in the seven remaining games for the Hawks before playoffs start?

2.) The Detroit Red Wings Sweepstakes - Detroit has won six games in a row and has garnered at least one point in each of their last ten. They are streaking up the standings and up the power rankings and are easily the hottest team in the NHL right now with all of their players healthy. The Wings are becoming that low-ranked team with a lot of potential that you don’t want to meet in the first round of the playoffs. One blogger went as far as to say that San Jose was purposely throwing games in order to avoid meeting the Red Wings in the first round. That might not be a bad strategy seeing that the Wings have had San Jose’s number all season. Can the Wins continue their impressive pace and finish the season strong in the standings? More importantly, can they keep up that impressive pace once playoffs begin in April?

1.) The Rocket Richard Race – Sidney Crosby leads the race with 47 goals, but Alexander Ovechkin and Steve Stamkos are right on his heels with 46 goals a piece. Ovechkin has won the trophy the past two years, but this could be Crosby’s year to shine as a goal-scoring machine. Stamkos came out of nowhere during a huge sophomore surge to stay on pace with Crosby and Ovechkin and could easily take home the trophy as well. All three players have cooled off in recent weeks, making the Rocket Richard Trophy for most goals in a season anyone’s to step up and grab at this point.

Steve Stamkos House Tour

Steve Stamkos of the Tampa Bay Lightning has been on an absolute tear this season, only his second in the NHL. After a good rookie campaign, which could have been better if it weren’t for Barry Melrose, the young Stamkos has blossomed this season into the top goal scoring threat on a Tampa Bay team that also features Vincent Lecavalier and Martin St. Louis. But have you ever wondered what kind of home a 20 year old NHL star lives in? Thanks to Bauer Hockey, we now know. Check it out.

Penguins rumored to host Winter Classic against Caps

A report coming out of Pittsburgh earlier today states that the Pittsburgh Penguins are in the running to host the 2010-11 NHL Winter Classic. Their opponent would be none other than the Washington Capitals, which would pit two of the NHL’s biggest stars in Sidney Crosby and Alexander Ovechkin against each other in what has become one of the biggest highlights of the NHL season.

Neither the Pittsburgh Penguins nor the NHL would confirm the rumor. The host of the Winter Classic is usually announced at the end of the summer along with the upcoming schedule for all of the NHL teams.

If the rumor is true, this would be the second Winter Classic appearance for the Pittsburgh Penguins in three years. The first Winter Classic in 2008 featured the Penguins vs the Buffalo Sabres. Sidney Crosby won the game for the Penguins in the shootout when he beat Buffalo goaltender Ryan Miller between the pads. This would also be the third Winter Classic to feature Eastern Conference teams. The only Winter Classic game to feature Western Conference teams was in 2009 when the Detroit Red Wings beat the Chicago Blackhawks at Wrigley Field in Chicago.

If such an event comes into fruition, it would obviously be entertaining not only because Crosby and Ovechkin would both be participating, but also because these are two of the best teams in the Eastern Conference squaring off against one another. Every time they play it’s a potential prequel to a playoff matchup in April or May. Not to mention Ovechkin himself always steps out onto the ice with massive amounts of explosive energy, which alone might make the game worth watching.

On the other hand, do we really need Sidney Crosby to be the star of another NHL event? Well, here’s the problem. Love it or hate it, Crosby is the face of the NHL because he is a top-notch athlete and he speaks fluent English. If the NHL is trying to grow their fan base outside of the normal people who watch hockey, they need to have their best players out on the ice for events like the Winter Classic. As pure fans of the game, we hate the prospect of another Sidney Crosby show. But the NHL loves it because a game that pits Ovechkin against Crosby, two of the NHL’s biggest stars, would most likely bring in tons of outside viewers who don’t normally watch NHL games.

Opponents of this matchup might ponder eliminating the Penguins from the equation and having the Capitals face another rival. Who else would they play? Nobody in their division is worth matching them against for an event like this. Not to mention there isn’t enough star power in the Southeast division to help grow the game the way a Crosby vs Ovechkin matchup would. No deal.

Love it or hate it, this matchup would be stellar for the league itself and bring some badly needed publicity into the mix. As viewership of the Winter Classic rises, the NHL needs to promote its biggest stars in hopes of bringing in even more viewers and keeping them glued to hockey. Crosby and Ovechkin give the NHL the best chance at doing that. Hopefuly in the future as the NHL establishes itself more and more we will finally see the Classic go out West into the warm weather, or maybe even have one on Canadian soil, but until then it’s all about bringing in the viewers and giving them a good show. Pittsburgh and Washington certainly should deliver.

NCAA Tournament Preview and Picks Part 2

ncaaYesterday I didn’t do so hot with the picks. I went 1-4, with only Wisconsin coming through and beating Vermont. Let’s hope I do a little better today as today’s picks will feature the Northeast and Midwest Regions. Yesterday’s picks featured the East and West Regions.

Note: Seeded teams are overall tournament seeded teams.

Northeast Regional- Worcester, Mass.

(4) Boston College vs Alaska: Saturday 1:30 p.m.

Boston College got here because they won the Hockey East. The Eagles have been peaking at the right moment, as they have been unbeaten in over six weeks. The Eagles has had solid goaltending between John Muse and Parker Milner. It was Muse who backstopped the Eagles to the national championship two seasons ago. What could scare the Eagles was his performance last weekend in the conference title game against Maine when he allowed six goals.

Alaska is closer to the North Star than the rest of us in the lower 48, and they should be thanking their lucky stars as they earned the fourth CCHA bid despite getting bounced in the quarterfinal round against Northern Michigan. The Nanooks have played very polarizing hockey this season. They would get hot and play stingy defense, then they would get cold and not put the puck in the net. Another question of note is where will the offense come from? Only three players have over 10 goals this season, which can help because BC won’t know which player to shut down. I like Boston College to win this match up.

North Dakota vs Yale: 5 p.m.

North Dakota got here  because they pulled off the difficult task of running through the gauntlet that is the WCHA Final Five and won three games in three days. Not to mention they played 6 games in 9 days dating back to the first round of the WCHA playoffs. They are on a hot streak in the last two weeks, but that doesn’t mean you’ll be successful in a one-and-done format. Whats made this North Dakota so unique is they are very young and don’t have that one go-to player, but several players playing really good hockey this time of the year.

Yale on the other hand, is a team that’s had a season quite different than most teams in the tournament. Some teams such as Cornell was low scoring but had solid goaltending. The Bulldogs led the nation in scoring as they averaged over four goals per game. But their goaltending is what’s let them down as they were eighth in goal differential. They can succeed in one of two ways: have the defense step up or simply make the game into a track meet and put up 5-6 goals per game on the scoreboard. With those two factors in mind, I think North Dakota has the opportunity to stop Yale’s offense and put up a few goals of their own. Expect the Fighting Sioux to fight another day in the regional final.

Regional Final: 5:30 p.m. Sunday

Advancing to the Frozen Four: Boston College

Midwest Regional- Fort Wayne, Ind.

(1) Miami vs Alabama-Huntsville: Saturday 4:00 p.m.

Miami is the overall top seed in the tournament. The Redhawks have played stellar hockey all season, with the exception being the drubbing they received from Michigan in the CCHA semifinals. This team is really deep, talented, and they are on a mission with the final 75 seconds of regulation in the national championship last season. This season, they have a little bit of everything: powerful offense, a vacuum defense, and solid special teams. What could bite them in the regional final is simply trying too hard to get back to the Frozen Four.

Alabama-Huntsville was one of the bracket-busters as they won the CHA tournament despite having a losing record. The CHA was supposed to be a one-bid league (Bemidji State) but earned themselves two. Whats working in their favor is some players do have NCAA tournament experience with a double overtime loss to Notre Dame in 2007. Whats also working in their favor is three of Miami’s seven losses this season came against CHA teams. UAH will have to play a perfect game and have a few bounces go their way if they want to beat Miami. As we saw yesterday with RIT beating Denver, anything can happen.

We’ve seen this situation before. Holy Cross over Minnesota in 2006. Bemidji State over Notre Dame in 2009. Those are the only 1-16 or 2-15 upsets in the modern 16-team NCAA tournament. Can lightning strike three times in five years? I don’t think so. Expect Miami to win by at least three goals.

Michigan vs Bemidji State: 7:30 p.m.

I knew this would happen. Michigan was sitting at 4-7 on November 20. Things in Ann Arbor wasn’t very good. The streak of 19 straight tournament births would be in doubt. But something happened. The Wolverines were able to turn things around and got hot at the right time as they are 8-1 since February 20. What they have been riding nearly since then is a third year walk-on goalie in Shawn Hunwick as he’s posted a 7-2 record in relief of the injured Bryan Hogan. Not bad for someone that’s seen less ice time than it takes to drive to the grocery store before stepping between the pipes.

Bemidji State is in gut-check mode. After running through the CHA regular season and playing solid hockey, they puked on themselves in the conference tournament with a loss to Niagara and a tie against Robert Morris. They have had two weeks to think about what didn’t go right in the CHA tournament. That combined with them not being able to sneak up against opponents this time around could spell trouble for the Beavers.

The Wolverines caught a favorable match up in the NCAA tournament. They have the potential to reach the Frozen Four and if they do, it can turn Ford Field into Michigan Stadium East. But first things first, expect them to beat Bemidji State before setting up a rematch of the CCHA semi’s with Miami for a chance to reach the Frozen Four.

Midwest Regional Final: Sunday, 8:00 p.m.

Advancing to the Frozen Four: Miami

NCAA Tournament Preview and Picks Part 1

The road to the Frozen Four starts tonight

The road to the Frozen Four starts tonight.

Well ladies and gentlemen, we have reached the point where every team wanted to be at the beginning of the college hockey season. Beginning tomorrow and ending Sunday afternoon, we will wind our way down from 16 teams to the Frozen Four. So enough with the cliches and metaphors and let’s get to the meat and potatoes of this blog and get down with regional breakdowns and picks. Today’s picks will feature the East and West Regions. The Northeast and Midwest Regions will be featured tomorrow.

Note: Seeded teams are overall tournament seeded teams.

East Regional- Albany, N.Y.

(2)Denver vs RIT: 3:00 p.m Friday

Denver qualified for the NCAA tournament as an at-large bid out of the WCHA. Denver was thought of as not only the WCHA tournament champion but also as one of the contenders to win the national championship. The Pioneers had not lost consecutive games all season until losing two games at the WCHA Final Five last weekend. Not a good sign if you’d think teams want to be playing peak hockey going into the NCAA tournament.

You would think Denver has a favorable match up in the first round, but they should be on upset alert as they go up against RIT. RIT won the Atlantic Hockey Conference tournament and is third in the nation in wins with 26. Only Denver and Miami have more than the Tigers at 27. They dominated the competition last weekend as they outscored their opponents 10-1. The Tigers are making their first appearance in the tournament and could shock the entire tournament if they upset the Pioneers. What could work in their favor is defense and goaltending as they are third in the nation as they allowed 2.08 goals per game.

While I would love to take RIT because the numbers don’t lie and they also feature Detroit native and longtime personal friend Cameron Burt, I like the Pioneers in this game.

Cornell vs New Hampshire: 6:30 p.m.

Things must be going pretty good over in the Cornell athletic department. The Big Red hoops team won two games in the basketball tournament and is in the Sweet 16. The hockey team won the ECAC tournament and is playing not far from home in the NCAA tournament in Albany. Ben Scrivens is one of the hottest goalies in the country as he is riding a three-game shutout streak. The Big Red doesn’t score in bunches but their forecheck is so strong that by the time the opponent has to dump-and-change.

New Hampshire has to play a near perfect game if they want to advance in the tournament. It’ll be a tremendous feat to make it all the way to the Frozen Four because if they get past Cornell, they will have another stellar goalie between the pipes in Denver’s Marc Cheverie. They will have to possess a strong forecheck against Cornell and try to keep the turnovers to a minimum. They will also have to keep Cornell to under one, maybe two goals and hope the game will come down to overtime where anything can happen.

I like Cornell in this match up because of their stingy defense and the ability to keep the opposition out of its zone.

East Regional Final: Saturday, 6:30 p.m.

Advancing to the Frozen Four: Denver

West Regional- St. Paul, Minn.

St. Cloud State vs Northern Michigan: 5:00 p.m.

In a regional where we are guaranteed to have an at-large team reach the Frozen Four, this match up features teams playing in the NCAA tournament for the ninth time. The difference is that the Huskies of the WCHA are 0-8 while the Wildcats of the CCHA are 10-9 in the tournament. The Huskies will have the “home ice” advantage as the crowd will be pro-St. Cloud State, but I have seen Northern Michigan and they could have the opportunity to travel especially since it is a drivable distance from Marquette to St. Paul.

St. Cloud State has to keep this game low scoring for them to have a chance. When I saw Northern Michigan against Ferris State in the CCHA semi’s last weekend, Northern can fire a lot of shots and as what we saw in the 63 second span in the second period, score quickly and in bunches. Northern Michigan is the team that’s playing better as of late, but what Wildcats team will show up: the team that can score two goals and win, or the team that can score four goals and lose?

If you think a three-over-two seed is an upset, then you will see it here. I’m going with Northern Michigan advancing to keep the tournament losing streak going for St. Cloud State.

(3) Wisconsin vs Vermont:

The Badgers is a team I had the opportunity to watch at the Camp Randall Classic in February. While they are the third seed nationally in the tournament, this team can scare me in this region. Wisconsin does have the offense and the power play (as demonstrated in the Camp Randall Classic) to win the national championship. But what can keep the Badgers away from Ford Field is goaltending. If they run into a hot goaltender during this weekend, I don’t believe Wisconsin’s own backstop Scott Gudmanson can be as equal.

Vermont is the team looking for the upset special in this match up. They reached the Frozen Four last season but they will be on everyone’s radar this time around. They even needed help to even reach the field when Boston College defeated Maine in the Hockey East title game. At 17-14-7, did they even belong in the tournament as a 21-13-6 Ferris State team stayed home? I guess you can thank their “quality of victories” over Denver, Boston College and two victories over New Hampshire in the conference tournament. The Catamounts struggled this year as they finished eighth in league play and have struggled to light the lamp.

The Badgers are the better team on paper, but the Catamounts did post several quality victories over top ranked teams this season. In one game tournament, the cream rises to the top and that cream just happened to be colored red. Wisconsin over Vermont in this regional semifinal.

West Regional Final: Saturday, 9:00 p.m.

Advancing to the Frozen Four: Wisconsin

Check back Saturday for previews and picks of the Northeast and Midwest Regions.

Red Wings and Flames fight for 8th seed in West

Since the Olympic break, the Detroit Red Wings have been on an impressive pace as they fight for a playoff berth for the 19th straight season. Things haven’t been easy for the club this year with injuries to key players early on, but now the Wings are healthy and playing the best hockey they have all season. Still, the one-way ticket into the playoffs is far from secure as the Wings cling to the 8th seed in the Western Conference with the Calgary Flames right on their heels.

jwilliams2001

The Wings go into tomorrow’s game against the St. Louis Blues with 85 points, four ahead of the Flames. Over their past five games, the Wings secured nine vital points over top-seeded teams like the Pittsburgh penguins, Vancouver Canucks, and even against the Flames themselves. However, the last point that would have given them an even ten-for-ten over the past five games came during a shootout loss to the lowly Edmonton Oilers, a team that took it to the Wings early and hard, scoring two goals in the first period despite the fact that the Wings were well rested after a four-day layoff. This is a disturbing trend that has manifested itself all season long. The Wings do well and play hard against better opponents, but against weaker ones they look disengaged. If the Wings plan on entering the postseason this year, that trend needs to stop.

Over the last ten games of the season, the Wings will play seven games against opponents ranked lower than them in the standings, including three games against the Columbus Blue Jackets. They will also meet the Nashville Predators twice, a team that Detroit is four points behind in the standings. Detroit will also have the pleasure of playing the Chicago Blackhawks for their last game of the season on Sunday, April 11. The Blackhawks lead the Central Division and are tied for the top spot in the West with Phoenix at 97 points. Meeting Chicago on the last day of the season in a make-or-break game is not what the Wings want. They need to secure points against lesser opponents now, and probably win at least one of the two against Nashville, and ensure that they can walk into that Chicago game with a secured playoff spot.

On the other hand, the Calgary Flames find themselves in a tough uphill battle with a grim outlook. Over the remaining ten games, the Flames will play six games against opponents ranked higher than them in the standings. It gets worse for Calgary. Five of those teams occupy the top five seeds in the NHL right now. That’s right, the Washington Capitals (3/28), Phoenix Coyotes (3/31), Chicago Blackhawks (4/4), San Jose Sharks Red Wings Flames Hockey(4/6) and the Vancouver Canucks (4/10) are all on tap for Calgary before the end of the season. While it doesn’t look pretty, Calgary is a hungry team making a strong push at that last seed. And since the above five teams are all securely in the playoffs, none of them have a strong incentive to win against the Flames except to pad their records and their stats.

Travel will be another factor that deeply affects both teams. The Red Wings will enjoy another six games on home ice where they have played extremely well all season. Plus, none of their remaining away games are on the West coast. The Flames, however, will only play on home ice an additional three times before the end of the season. Their schedule includes an East coast trip against the New York Islanders, Boston Bruins and Washington Capitals before flying back to Calgary for a home game against Phoenix and then back on the road against the Colorado Avalanche and the Chicago Blackhawks. Needless to say, Calgary will be all over the map with no idea what time zone they are in by the time the season is over.

Both the Red Wings and Flames need to be at the top of their game night in and night out if they want to make the playoffs. The Red Wings looked good against Pittsburgh, but they have struggled against lesser teams all season and their recent performance against Edmonton was no exception. With seven games on the schedule against lower-seeded teams remaining for the Wings, they need to buck that trend. Most of those teams won’t make the playoffs, but they don’t want Detroit to either. On paper, the Flames have the tougher schedule, both in terms of opponents and travel. Against opponents that don’t have much to play for, the Flames may be able to steal a few points, but travel and fatigue could certainly be detrimental to their cause. It will be a close race, but with all things considered, the Wings only need to be good down the stretch while Calgary needs to be great. The smart money is on the Wings to nab the 8th seed in the West.

Crosby Cross-checking Zetterberg

Last night, the Detroit Red Wings took home ice against the Pittsburgh Penguins. The two teams played to what was to be expected, a playoff like atmosphere.

When all was said and done, the Wings came out on top with a 3 – 1 win to bolster their playoff spot chances. Unfortunately though, emotions seemed to erupt on the last play.

Sidney Crosby, held without a point, only 3 shots, and most notable, a negative 3 rating, frustrated, took exception to the back of Henrik Zetterberg.

Post game quotes from Zetterberg gives insight to what NHL players expect from Crosby; “I knew it was him without turning around”.

Crosby, on the other hand, felt goaltender Jimmy Howard was out of line. “I don’t think that’s where he should be, I don’t know what he was doing over there.”

It is true, that most Detroit fans have a deep seeded dislike of the Penguins, I no different, but be it like or dislike, Crosby’s actions are not needed within the league. The NHL, in my opinion, is one of the classiest sports around. I would hope that the NHL fine Crosby for his actions, yet with the already blemished mark, the disciplinary actions this year have been far from appropriate.

Below is the video. Take notice to Crosby targeting Zetterberg right from the face-off.

LA Kings meets Star Wars: The Clone Wars

Teams across the league partake in enticing hockey packages, but none quite like the Los Angeles Kings. Tonight when the Kings face the Colorado Avalanche, fans will be encouraged to dress up for the Star Wars The Clone Wars night with the LA Kings.

Limited Edition Yoda puck for the LA King Star Wars themed night.

Limited Edition Yoda puck for the LA King Star Wars themed night.

Tickets will be reduced, sections will have Star Wars themes, photo opportunities with your favorite Star Wars characters, in-game entertainment featuring Star Wars: The Clone Wars, and perhaps the coolest part of the package, limited edition Kings Yoda hockey puck.

It is always nice to be able to go to a game, but sometimes it is that much sweeter when you have another incentive. My hat is off to the Kings for putting together such a cool hockey package.

Unfortunately I will not be able to attend, but I will be watching in hopes to see a hard fought game, as well as a chance to see a hot Princess Leah. Is it cold in here or are you just happy to see me?
