Osgood unhappy with current role as “backup”

3139719433_c160c1d88eChris Osgood, the normally mild-mannered, easy-going goaltender for the Detroit Red Wings, vented his frustration with coach Mike Babcock to the media recently and sounded off on his role as a “backup” goaltender to rookie Jimmy Howard.

“You have to get into some games and get into a groove and then I can play like I can. It’s not that I don’t know how to do it. But if you don’t play, it’s impossible to get to that point,” Osgood said. “I’m a goalie, ok, and I’ve been playing for 20-some years since juniors. What I say (about goaltending) is closer to the facts than what he (Babcock) would say.”

So far, Babcock hasn’t specifically commented on what Osgood had to say, but Babcock has made it well known that the goalie with the hot hand will get the starts. And right now, it’s tough to take Howard off the rink with his level of play as of late.

Osgood started in only three games in December, earning only one win and eight goals against. He has seven wins in a total of 18 starts this season and has allowed 46 goals with a goals against average of 2.72 and a save percentage of .901. In 23 starts, Howard has 14 wins and has given up 54 goals with a goals against average of 2.20 and a save percentage of .923. Both statistical categories are considerably better than those of Osgood.

While Osgood’s rant comes as a bit of a suprise because he normally is so easy-going, it’s hard to argue with results. Going back to December 3, Howard is 7-4-1 with one shutout. He looks sharp and focused every game and is a big reason why the Red Wings are still looming in the playoff picture. If Howard continues with his stellar play into the second half of the season, he very well might play his way into rookie of the year contention.

I agree that Osgood needs starts in order to fine tune his game and get into a groove, but he also needs to show that he deserves them. Neither goalie played great in the first quarter of the season when Babcock was alternating back and forth. Either goalie would put up a great effort one night only to follow it up with a sub-par performance the next. Howard finally get it into gear and started playing to his potential, thus overtaking Ozzie for the starting job.

Osgood should certainly get a fair number of chances here in January as the team plays virtually every other day and back-to-back games at two points during the month. As a veteran, Osgood should know that if he wants change to occur, he needs to send a message with his play and not his mouth.

Singing the Blues

The Blues are in a dark place. Hopefully a new coach can breathe life into a losing team.

The Blues are in a dark place. Hopefully a new coach can breathe life into a losing team.

Saturday morning St. Louis Blue’s President John Davidson announced the removal of head coach Andy Murray.

Murray has been coaching for the Blues since 2006. He was praised for his performance last year, as the Blues went 25-9-7 in the second half of the season, jumping from 15th place to 6th place within the Western Conference. Quite a feat, unfortunately Murray will not get another chance to pull off a miraculous second half.

The Blues currently are in 12th place within the division at 40 points. Although not considered out of playoff contention, it is unlikely they will reach postseason as the team currently holds the worse home record in the NHL at 6-13-3.

Murray will be replaced by Davis Payne on an interim basis. Payne was coaching the Blue’s American Hockey League affiliate the Peoria Rivermen. The Rivermen are currently in 6th place within the AHL Western Conference, Blue’s fans are hoping he can do the same for the NHL team.

Team USA: All-American Youth

Today following the 2010 Winter Classic at Fenway park, the team that will represent the United States at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver was selected.

Left off the roster are players that have dawned the stars and stripes like Mike Modano, Chris Chelios and Jeremy Roenick. Team USA GM Brian Burke made it clear during the summer that they were there to win and the key to winning is through youth.

Only three players on the roster have played in the Olympics before.  That includes forwards Chris Drury, Jamie Jangenbrunner, and defensemen Brian Rafalski.

The deepest segment of the American roster is in goal. Look for Ryan Miller to take the no. 1 job into the February 16 game against Switzerland. Backing up Miller and should see playing time will be Tim Thomas. Thomas said after the Winter Classic, “I’ve been waiting 30 years for this opportunity. I couldn’t be happier,” The third goalie will be 22-year old Jonathan Quick.

There could have been better choices for Burke in the no. 3 goalie position, but Quick is best served watching and learning for the 2014 Olympics in Russia. Look for Quick and Jimmy Howard to be the future of American goaltending.

On the blue line, the player fans should be most excited to see of Jack Johnson. He has a good shot from the point, and can lay bodychecks that are crushing. Jack won’t be the only Johnson on the blue line as he is joined by Erik Johnson. Having these two players who were part of the USA National Development Program in Ann Arbor, MI in their junior hockey days is proof that the European-style of sports development can work in the USA. Both have experience playing internationally as part of the program.

Up front, the Americans have a lot of youth and skilled talent. Look for Patrick Kane, Bobby Ryan, Phil Kessel and Zach Parise to provide a significant amount of offense. In addition to Drury and Langenbrunner, other players that are pieces of the puzzle include Paul Stasny, David Backes, and Ryan Kesler.

The player that’s playing with the most sense of American pride will be defensemen Ryan Suter. His father, Bob, was a member of the last team that captured the gold medal in 1980.

Coaching the team will be Ron Wilson. He will be assisted by Scott Gordon and John Tortorella.

The American squad will have a difficult task ahead of them if they have a chance at a medal. Teams better than them on paper include Canada, Sweden, Czech Republic and Russia.
