Kovalchuk will be on the radar for many come trade deadline

Ilya Kovalchuk will undoubtedly be the biggest name in free agency this summer if the Atlanta Thrashers fail to sign the winger to a long-term deal before the free agency period hits. Even before that, however, Atlanta needs to determine if they will be able to sign the winger at all or if they should ship him out to the highest bidder at the trade deadline.

Atlanta currently sits at 12th place in a tight Eastern Conference race that has the team only four points out of a playoff spot. However, it still remains highly unlikely that Atlanta would advance beyond the first round even if they make it to the playoffs, which roughly translates into the fact that they would be better off shedding their assets at the trade deadline to get the best return. And they certainly could get a hefty return for a star like Kovalchuk. But who exactly might be interested in Kovalchuk’s services and what price would they pay for a player who has tallied 40 or more goals in each of his past four NHL seasons (and likely will do it again this year) and has 90 or more points twice in that span?

The price tag would involve more than just high-end draft picks for the next four-to-six years. Atlanta would want roster players in return, players that will contribute sooner than later and help the team rebuild. Teams like the Calgary Flames and the Chicago Blackhawks and names like Dion Phaneuf and Patrick Sharp have been mentioned by other bloggers in return for the star left wing. But if other teams jump in, the price tag might go up and those teams might be forced to shell out a high price for what could cost them more in the long run.

Chicago is coddled pretty close to the cap right now, and will be for seasons to come after signing youngsters Kane and Toews to similar 5-year deals just a few months back. The addition of Kovalchuk would give Chicago unprecedented scoring depth, but Chicago might have to give up 2067837.bindefensive depth or role-players like Sharp or Dave Bolland. Unfortunately, as great as offense is during the playoffs, you need your grinders to win some tough games for you. Chicago could also consider shipping goaltender Cristobal Huet to Atlanta, but does Chicago really want to go with an inexperienced netminder in Annti Niemi for the playoffs, even if he has outplayed Huet for the majority of the season? Those price tags may not be too high for Chicago,  especially if the team has a win-it-now attitude. Cap issues might prevent them from being in this position again for years to come.

The New York Islanders were another name mentioned in regards to Kovalchuk. For the trade deadline? Don’t even think about it. The Islanders are a young team in rebuilding mode and there is no way they would give up their young core for Kovalchuk right now. However, the Islanders have the cap space and certainly would toss out a few hefty offers to bring Kovalchuk to New York in the offseason.

What about the San Jose Sharks? Here is a team that has been solid for several years but has never been able to get over the hump and make it to the Stanley Cup Finals. The addition of Dany Heatley certainly will help that cause, but adding Kovalchuk would give them a great offensive edge in the playoffs. For that to happen, San Jose would not only have to give up draft picks or prospects, but a player like Ryane Clowe or Devin Setoguchi might be part of the package, too.

If the Los Angeles Kings are buyers at the trade deadline, they could possible make a pitch for Kovalchuk. Rumors have been circulating for a long time about the Kings wanting to trade away left wing Alexander Frolov.

The Bruins are only one point out of a playoff spot right now, but they are reeling from the loss of Phil Kessel in the off-season and injuries to Marc Savard and Marco Sturm have severely hampered their play. However, Savard, when healthy, is one of the best set-up men in the NHL and Kovalchuk would benefit greatly from Savard’s passing abilities.

New Jersey would probably love to add another superstar scoring threat to their roster. But might players like Travis Zajac, Jamie Langenbrunner or Patrik Elias need to pack their bags in order for that to happen?

Pittsburgh could make a run, but they probably don’t have any draft picks or prospects to give after acquiring Marian Hossa a few years ago from Atlanta at the trade deadline.

It would be interesting to see if the Washington Capitals place a bid. Ovechkin, Backstrom and Kovalchuk? Oh my indeed. With Ovechkin and Kovalchuk both playing for Team Russia in a few weeks, might the topic come up in the locker room or off the ice between the two? But would Atlanta want a player like Alexander Semin in return, or would they settle for players like Brooks Laich, Matt Bradley or Tomas Fleischmann? Washington might even consider shipping out goaltender Jose Theadore if they believe back-up Semyon Varlamov to be the goalie of the future in Washington.

The trade deadline will come up quickly after the Olympic break, and Atlanta has some tough decisions to make in regards to their franchise player. However, the rest of the league will have tough decisions to make as well. How big of a price are you willing to pay for a star like Ilya Kovalchuk? Especially when there is no guarantee that you could win the Cup with Kovalchuk, or that you would be able to resign him in the off-season. Reports indicate the Kovalchuk wants at least $10 million a season when he signs his new contract, meaning that a lot of top-end teams would be giving up a lot to make a run at the Cup and get little in return afterward. If Atlanta does decide to trade Kovalchuk come March 3, the winner of the Kovalchuk sweepstakes might also end up becoming the biggest loser in the long run.

Lack of offense not a worry for Red Wings

Red Wings head coach Mike Babcock isn’t worried about the lack of production from players like Pavel Datsyuk this season. Instead, Babcock attributes the lack of production from key players, that also includes Nicklas Lidstrom, Brian Rafalski and Henrik Zetterberg, to a shift in team mentality from a puck-possession style of play to a more defensive-minded effort while riddled with injuries. With many players coming back from injuries in recent games, Babcock expects that production will improve and that everything will work out.

“People have talked about the (decline in) scoring from Nick (Lidstrom) and Rafi (Brian Rafalski) this year, and then Pavel for that matter,” Babcock said. “It’s amazing when all you do is check, check, check. The reason they are like that is because they don’t have the puck near as much as (they) used to. Suddenly, now we got the puck all the time. Guys will start scoring.”

Datsyuk understands that he needs to pick up the offense, and now that players are coming back from injuries the team can begin to control the puck and play a style of game more similar to what the players are used to.

“At the beginning of the season, we lost so many guys we (focused) more on defense. Now, the defense is playing better, so we go back to (focusing on) offense,” Datsyuk said. “We get more players back, we play together, now we come back to our style. But we need more scoring.”

Jonathan Ericsson and Dan Cleary both recently returned from injuries. Reports indicate that Niklas Kronwall and Tomas Holmstrom both may be about as week away from returning to action with Johan Franzen and Jason Williams expected to return after the Olympic break.

Captain Nicklas Lidstrom has come alive recently with two goals and three assists in his last five games. Lidstrom is also a plus-4 over that time period and has 25 points on the season. Brian Rafalski has three points, including two goals, over his last five games as well. Datsyuk currently sits at 36 points and only has two assists in his last five.

“It’s not frustrating,” Datsyuk said. “You always want to score more, but the first priority is to help team.”

Before tonight’s game against the Wild, Detroit sits in 9th place overall in the Western Conference with 56 points – one point behind the 8th place Los Angeles Kings. While it’s better to get at least one point in a shootout loss than receive nothing for your efforts, the Wings need to start getting two points from lesser opponents and need to steal some points from conference and division rivals.

Datsyuk and Bertuzzi Make Niemi Look Foolish, Wings Lose Shootout

The Detroit Red Wings have now lost consecutive games in shootouts, yesterday to the Stars and today against the Chicago Blackhawks. While yesterday’s shootout was filled with controversy over Steve Ott’s phantom goal, today featured a couple highlight reel goals from Pavel Datsyuk and Todd Bertuzzi.

Datsyuk pulled a move out from the book of Linus Omark, and certainly did not disappoint. He lobbed up a real soft shot that completely fooled Antti Niemi. Later, Todd Bertuzzi pulls off some magic as he went for the spin-o-rama and buried it beautifully. While a couple of the Red Wings stars came up big on national tv for the shootout, they were not fortunate enough to win. The point will certainly help as Detroit hunts for a playoff spot, but they narrowly missed two more points this weekend and they could have desperately used each one.

Here’s a video of both goals from today in case you missed them:

Reality TV Stars Take In Hockey Game

Back in November, I wrote about babes of the country music world taking in a hockey game.

Well it looks like reality stars are doing the same. I admit it, I’m a fan of the hit MTV show Jersey Shore. It’s one of my Thursday night must-see TV shows along with The Office, and 30 Rock.

If you are unfamiliar with the show, I can compare it to The Sopranos meets The Real World. There’s seven italian-american 20-somethings from various areas of the northeast (New York, Rhode Island, New Jersey, etc.) and they live in a rented house, work at a t-shirt shop, and party all night long in front of television cameras.

Of course there’s the typical ingredients that make a reality television entertaining such as fights, drama, and hooking up. Alright enough about the show and on to why I’m writing this post. The cast of the show have been on a media blitz as of late as they have received high ratings and millions of viewers. They have been on ahows like The Today Show, Jay Leno, Chelsea Lately and others. While on the west coast, the females of the show, Jenni “J-Wow”, Angelina “Jolie” and Nicole “Snookie” took in a Kings- Ducks game earlier this week. You can tell they aren’t seasoned TV stars as they couldnt find the camera. Unlike the country music girls, I wouldn’t call the Jersey Shore girls “babes” but they are attractive looking girls. League’s Suspension Consistency

In last nights contest between the Minnesota Wild and the visiting team Pittsburgh Penguins, Pen’s Sergei Gonchar laid a questionably dirty and hgih hit on Wild winger Cal Clutterbuck.

The league this season is cutting down on head shots and recently displayed this by handing a suspension to Phoenix Coyote defenseman Ed Jovanovski for his elbow to New York Islanders John Tavares. The question becomes though, will the league suspend Gonchar?

The league has been under scrutiny for wanting to make the game a cleaner, safer game for the players, by removing dangerous plays. This year specifically by the means of removing head shots. Yet earlier in the season, when time to muscle up and stick to their guns, the league did not suspend Philadelphia Flyer’s Captain Mike Richards for a hit on Florida Panther’s star David Booth, leaving Booth on the IR to this day. So the question becomes, is the league playing favorites?

Recently stated, the league suspended defenseman Ed Jovanovski for an elbow to John Tavares’ head. Was this done because it was dangerous and shouldn’t be in the game? Was it done because it was blatantly obvious?  Or was it done because the person being hit was The John Tavares, the next greatest thing to hockey according to Canadian news for the past few years?

One would hope that that the league intends on removing dangerous plays, for the betterment of the players, but sometimes you do wonder if favorites are being played. Are you more likely to get a suspension if you hit a prominent figure in the NHL, or is the justice blind?

Underneath is the play where Gonchar took a run at Clutterbuck. You be the judge on a suspension or not.

Filatov Unhappy in Columbus

Nikita Filatov is unhappy with Head coach Ken Hitchcock.

Nikita Filatov is unhappy with Head Coach Ken Hitchcock.

Columbus Blue Jackes 2008 NHL Entry Draft prospect Nikita Filatov expressed is unhappiness with the organization. The 19 year old signed a three year deal with the organization, has specifically pointed out head coach Ken Hitchcock. Either changes need to be made, or he plans on not coming back.

Hmm…

The team will most likely not make the playoffs. Also, head coach Ken Hitchcock will likely be removed before the season is out. But who does this 19 year old kid think he is?

The Western Conference is by the far the dominant league. Take the teams 45 points, 13th division standing and 8 points put of the playoffs. In the Eastern Conference, they would be in 11th place and only 3 points out of the playoffs. Also, last season was the teams first ever playoff appearance. So can you really blame Coach Hitchcock?

Filatov is a 19 year old who if he has such a problem, can go play in the KHL on his home soil. He would make more money, no doubt about it. But there is a reason players want to play in the NHL. Let the boy learn the hard way, let him understand he is not the voice of the team and he needs to learn the ropes before demanding such things.

Rob Schremp Goal vs Colorado Avalanche

Rob Schremp, mostly known for his ridiculous lacrosse style shootout goals on youtube, has added another beautiful goal to his portfolio. This baseball style goal came against the Avalanche, and is quite similar to the Marian Hossa goal scored against Tampa Bay in December. Personally, I think Schremp’s goal was a lot better. What do you guys think?

Ribeiro placed on IR

Mike RibeiroDallas Stars center Mike Ribeiro has been place on the IR today, expected to be out 4 – 6 weeks. Ribeiro suffered a throat contusion Wednesday night against the New York Rangers as Ribeiro took a stick to the throat from opponent Chris Higgins. From what I can recall, the play was unintentional, still though,  an unfortunate loss for the Stars.

The Dallas Stars are currently 4th in the Pacific with a record of 18-14-11. The point total of 47 puts them in a tough race for the playoffs in the Western Conference whereas the 6th through 8th spot each belong to teams with 53 points.

Ribeiro has 10 goals and 23 assists for the year. Fourteen of those points are on the power play, 4 goals and 10 assists.

Dallas is currently on a 3 game losing streak, with one only imagining with the loss of Ribeiro, that streak may be extended.
