Six player deal sends Giguere, Phaneuf to Toronto

Brian Burke knows how to make a splash.

The Toronto Maple Leafs GM announced today that the team acquired two former NHL All-Stars in Dion Phaneuf from the Calgary Flames and J.S. Giguere from the Anaheim Ducks. In return, Burke shipped Ian White, Matt Stajan, Nick Hagman and Jamal Mayers to Calgary while forwardJason Blake and backup netminder Vesa Toskala are headed to Anaheim.

While the deal comes as a shocker and is nothing short of a blockbuster, what should really come as no surprise is that any of these players moved before the trade deadline.

Giguere has been in a season-long battle with backup goalie Jonas Hiller for the number one starting position. Anaheim virtually awarded the starting spot to Hiller when they announced earlier this week that they had signed the young goaltender to a four-year extension, making Giguere expandable. With Anaheim currently outside of playoff contention, it seems like a no-brainer that they would trade Giguere before the deadline.

Rumors that Phaneuf (pictured) may be shipped elsewhere had also arisen throughout the season, although most of those rumors had the name Ilya Kovalchuk attached in return. At the expense of Phaneuf, Calgary acquires scoring depth in Hagman and Stajan.

The Maple Leafs have failed to make an impact in the standings all season, suffering behind sub par goaltending and dismal defense. Phaneuf and Giguere address

two of those needs. Phanuef will also bring a physical dimension to Toronto’s lineup. Burke loves to stock his roster with big, physical players and Phanuef fits that bill perfectly. And while Phaneuf has struggled in recent seasons, he has displayed a strong offensive prowess in the past with Calgary. In 2007-08, Phaneuf accumulated 17 goals and 43 assists along with 182 penalty minutes.

After the trades went through, Brian Burke suggested that more deals may come out of Toronto in the weeks leading up to the trade deadline.

“We’re still open for business,” Burke remarked. “We’re not done.”

Alexei Panikarovski will be a restricted free agent at the end of the season and may be dealt and puck-moving defenseman Tomas Kaberle has also been the subject of trade rumors around the league. Either one of these players could be next to go before the March 3 trade deadline.

Great save by Brian Elliot keeps Sens rolling

The Ottawa Senators have won 9 games in a row and streaked to 5th place in the Eastern Conference standings. Part of the reason for their recent success? Goaltender Brian Elliot, who recently made quite possibly the save of the season when he stopped a point-blank shot from Marian Hossa of the Chicago Blackhawks to preserve a 3-1 lead. Ottawa went on to win the game 4-1 with Elliot stopping 29 shots. Check out this video for Elliot’s amazing acrobatics.

Red Wings Enforcer Lacks Enforcer Qualities

Brad May has been a disappointing enforcer for the Detroit Red Wings

Brad May has been a disappointing enforcer for the Detroit Red Wings

Throughout his lengthy NHL career, playing with seven different teams over the course of nearly twenty years, Brad May has been known as a gritty enforcer. He’s brought in not to score points, but to provide a physical presence on the ice and drop the gloves when necessary. This season, however, Brad May has been nothing but a bust for the Detroit Red Wings.

May has suited up for 37 games this season, only dropping the gloves in eight. He hasn’t been in a physical altercation in over a month. His last fight came on December 28th against the Columbus Blue Jackets.

Even in the games May has fought, he is never choosing a time to bout that would benefit his team. Instead, he goes after records by fighting players like Krys Barch of the Dallas stars, who May has battled with twice this season.

The May vs. Barch fight on November 18th is a perfect example. The two talked during warm-ups, and shared a laugh at one point. Later, in the first period, May declined to fight. In the second period, they finally went at it, after Brad May had removed the visor from his helmet. Not a thing happened during the game that lead to this fight, the two just decided to go, for fun.

It becomes very aggravating, especially during the Wings recent struggles, that Brad May offers no high energy playing when he’s on the ice. He doesn’t skate hard and make crushing hits, he doesn’t pick a fight to set the tone for his team and send a message to their opponent, and when he does fight, he does it for the wrong reasons. He’s just a sub-par player getting five minutes of ice time during the games he plays. At best, he is a step behind the Red Wings previous enforcer, Aaron Downey, and that really isn’t saying much.

While the Red Wings really enjoy coasting along without a true enforcer, it would certainly benefit them to sign a player with qualities like Jordin Tootoo by next season. Tootoo is a player that everyone hates, except the Predators and their fans. However, he’s the kind of guy that you would love to have on your team. He works hard every day, makes big hits, creates energy, fights to get his team going and send a message, and gets on the nerves of the opposition. That’s the kind of enforcer the Detroit Red Wings need.

Sutherland sports dress on Letterman

6a00d8341c630a53ef012876d33e19970cActor Kiefer Sutherland has done a lot in his storied Hollywood career, but wearing a dress on national television certainly seems like a first.

Sutherland, who currently stars as action hero Jack Bauer on the hit television series 24, came out for his appearance on the Late Show with david Letterman sporting a green dress that looked more like wallpaper than an item of clothing. The reason for his ensamble?

“I lost a bet,” Sutherland admitted to Letterman at the start of the interview, stating that he bet that New England would win their NFL playoff game. And who did Sutherland lose the bet to? None other than former NHL All-Star and Stanley Cup winner Dave Andreychuck.

Andreychuck played in the NHL for 26 seasons and amassed 640 goals and 698 assists during his career. He won the Stanley Cup as captain of the Tampa Bay Lightning in 2003-04 after playing in the NHL for 22 seasons without winning a Cup. Subsequently, that victory would be the only Stanley Cup victory of his career. Andreychuck holds the record for most career power play goals with 270 and sits at 5th on the all-time games played list with 1,639.

Sutherland has also starred in movies such as The Three Musketeers, A Time to Kill, L.A. Confidential, A Few Good Men and Phone Booth. He is known to be a big hockey fan and even plays hockey himself. On Late Night with Jimmy Fallon a few weeks back, Sutherland spoke about how he played in a charity hockey game on the outdoor rink built at Fenway Park for the Winter Classic. The event was organized by former NHL superstar Cam Neely and fellow actor Dennis Leary and raised over $500,000. Sutherland is also close friends with former NHL great Wayne Gretzky.

The Big Chill at the Big House – Michigan State vs. Michigan

The Cold War. Michigan State and Michigan played at Spartan Stadium in East Lansing back in 2001 in front of a record setting crowd of 74,544 fans. These two college teams pioneered today’s NHL Winter Classic. Now the two teams who started it all will face off again, this time in Ann Arbor, MI, on December 11, 2010.

picturemichigan_umstadium2Michigan Stadium, nicknamed The Big House, will have a maximum capacity over 108,000 by the time this game takes place. While it’s too early to tell if the game will sell out, a new attendance record for a hockey game is certainly expected.

Red Berenson, University of Michigan hockey coach, had this to say about the game: “This will be an unbelievable event. Not only is this a great rivalry between two top programs, but for it to be held in the Big House at Michigan is beyond what any of us have ever dreamt. This is finally a reality and it could be the largest crowd ever to witness a hockey game of any kind. I know our team, our staff and our fans from all over the country will be counting the days until the Big Chill at the Big House arrives.”

The ice will be placed right in the middle of the football field with the red line of the ice hockey rink layered right over the 50-yard-line of the football field. The end-boards of the hockey rink will reach to the 17-yard-lines on either side of the field. The Big Chill will be the fifth Division 1 hockey game to be played outdoors.

“To me, it’s a throwback because it’s how I started,” said Berenson. “It’s just a little of everything and you see the players enjoying it and the fans enjoying it. There’s just something magical about it.”

Michigan and Michigan State skated to a 3-3- tie in the original Cold War. The rematch between the two teams will be counted as one of Michigan’s two home games against the Spartans.

Nino Niederreiter Shootout Goal at CHL Top Prospects Skills Competition

What a sick move Nino Niederreiter pulled off in the CHL Top Prospects Skills Competition. I’ve seen this move pulled off before, originally seen a while back as Mission’s Move of the Month from Tyler Svoboda, but never like this. Nino roofed it, no problem, one handed!

Markov confronts Price over poor play

Reports coming out of Montreal claim that defenseman Andrei Markov confronted goaltender Carey Price after the team’s 4-3 overtime loss to the St. Louis Blues last Wednesday.

In the locker room immediately following the game, Markov reportedly told Price, “if you are not going to play with heart, stay home. We don’t need you here.” Reports also claim that teammates in the locker room came to the defense of both players after the confrontation.

This couldn’t come at a worse time for the Canadiens. The team has lost two in a row and sit outside the playoff picture at 9th place in the Eastern Conference. However, Markov’s comments resonate on deeper levels for the Canadiens.

It was reported earlier in the season that backup goaltender Jaroslav Halak approached management and asked for a trade. To many, Halak has outplayed Price for the better part of two seasons now while Price continues to struggle, leading many fans to believe that Halak should be the starter. Judging by Markov’s comments, he agrees with that assessment.

Both goalies are set to become restricted free agents this summer, which continues to prompt rumors that one of the two goalies could get shipped elsewhere by March 3. With all of these factors considered, and now with Markov confronting Price directly, management may begin to reconsider trading Halak and think about moving Price instead.

Most Valuable Players Thus Far

With every team having played at least 50 games, I think we’re approaching a good time to start talking about the league’s most valuable players this season. I’ve separated my choices into three different categories to make things easier, the Most Valuable Goalie, the Most Valuable Defenseman, and the Most Valuable Player. Let’s jump right in and take a look.

Most Valuable Goaltender: Ryan Miller – Buffalo Sabres

Ryan Miller was the clear cut choice for me. Several other goalies could make a case, but Miller has been absolutely clutch this season and the Buffalo Sabres would not be where they are today (1st in the Northeast Division, 3rd in the Eastern Conference) without his stellar play.

While he hasn’t won a game in his past three starts, Miller has still put together some great numbers. His 2.09 goals against average is 2nd in the NHL, sitting only behind Chicago backup Antti Niemi. Miller is also currently posting a .933 save percentage, the highest in the league. Along with those impressive stats, Miller is tied for 4th in wins with 27 and tied for 3rd in shutouts with 5.

Honorable Mention: Martin Brodeur, Craig Anderson, Ilya Bryzgalov

Most Valuable Defenseman: Duncan Keith – Chicago Blackhawks

Duncan Keith has really turned into a solid and reliable defenseman for the Blackhawks. His offensive skills, as well as his ability to shut down the oppositions best players, has turned him into an irreplaceable piece of the team. On most nights, you can find Keith playing 25 minutes or more.

Keith is putting together a career year offensively, and you can expect him to get better as he enters his prime. So far this season, he has posted 11 goals and 35 assists for 46 points in only 52 games. His point total is 2nd to only Patrick Kane, and he also ranks 2nd on the team in +/- with a +18. Only 11 of his points thus far have come on the power-play, so Keith is not only a threat there, but especially even strength. Duncan Keith definitely has a bright future with the Chicago Blackhawks.

Honorable Mention: Mike Green, Drew Doughty, Tyler Myers

Henrik Sedin is currently the Most Valuable Player in the NHL

Henrik Sedin is currently the Most Valuable Player in the NHL

Most Valuable Player: Henrik Sedin – Vancouver Canucks

Where would the Canucks be this season without the outstanding play of Henrik Sedin? In case you haven’t been paying attention this season, he is playing out of his mind. Since the start of December, he has only failed to score a point in two games. This has resulted in point streaks of 9 games, 10 games, and his current 5 game point streak. His point total over that that is 48, through 10 goals and 38 assists.

The Sedin line is probably the hottest line in the NHL. Other lines may come close, but you can’t touch the production he has had this season. As we stand today, 52 games in for the Canucks, Henrik has already set a career high in goals with 24. He’s currently 19 assists shy of his career high of 71, which he will break in approximately 10 games at his current pace. Alongside those numbers, his 76 points are only 6 shy of tying a career high. Did I mention the Canucks have only played 52 games? At his current pace, Henrik Sedin will have no problem breaking the 100 point barrier and leading the Canucks to the playoffs. His strong play will be most crucial if the Canucks plan on making a run at the Stanley Cup this spring.

Coyotes in Detroit

Tonight the Phoenix Coyotes visit Joe Louis Arena to go against Conference competitor the Detroit Red Wings. The two teams have met three times already with Detroit taking two out of the three.  Will the Coyotes clip the mending Wings, or will Detroit fly away with the “W”?

Detroit is coming off of a tough loss to the Los Angeles Kings. That loss has leap frogged them the wrong way. The Wings are currently in 8th place among the conference with 58 points, due only in that the Calgary Flames are sinking fast within the Conference (1-8-1 in last ten).

A ray of hope shines for the Wings as defenseman Niklas Kronwall returns to the lineup. One thing to look out for though is every time an injured player comes back to the Wings lineup, another person goes down.

Phoenix sits 5th within the Conference at 63 points. Looking pretty good right now, however goaltender Ilya Bryzgalov is showing possible signs of wear and tear with only 4 wins and a 3.38 goals against average in the last month. Not to worry though as the offense has scored an average of 3.6 goals in their last 5 games.

Tonight I will be in attendance with Tony A., a long time reader, responder and a Barbie doll collector. Hopefully we can agree to disagree on the outcome.

On a different note, rumors of where Ilya Kovalchuk will land before the trade deadline are circulating. Yet no rumors of possibly moving to Phoenix? Hmm…  Phoenix does have the largest cap space currently and would be able to afford Kovalchuk’s expected of 10 million plus salary a year. They also have two first round draft picks. Just throwing it out there. But who knows, maybe there is room for only one Ilya on the team. I’m crossing my finger regardless.

Wings get Kronwall’d

Defenseman Niklas Kronwall will return to the lineup tonight for the Detroit Red Wings after going down on Nov. 21 with a sprained knee.

“It’s nice to have him back,” coach Mike Babcock said. “We need a boost right now. I don’t think we played very good the other night. I thought L.A. was better, harder-working and more competitive than we were and I hadn’t seen that in a while.”

Kronwall will skate alongside his usual defense partner Brad Stuart, who has been one of the Wings’ most impressive and consistent players all year. Both players together add a very physical and gritty dimension to the Wings’ lineup.

The addition of Kronwall means the Wings are one step closer to becoming fully healthy. Injuries have plagued the team all season and players like Justin Abdelkader, who was slated to spend the season in Grand Rapids, have been called upon to fill the void. Tomas Homlstrom and Jason Williams are also preparing to return to the lineup soon and Johan Franzen expects to be back before the Olympic break.

The Wings may have some tough decisions to make in the near future as more skaters prepare to return from the IR. Salary cap issues as well as roster issues may force the Wings to move some bodies. When Williams and Holmstrom return, the Wings will be one man over the regulated 23-man roster. It’s expected that Justin Abdelkader will be sent down to Grand Rapids to create roster space. However, the Wings will face the same situation when Franzen returns, not to mention that Franzen’s salary will be back on the books which will put the Wings roughly $1.5 million over the cap. It’s expected that the Wings may move a body or two in order to accommodate Franzen. Derek Meech could become expandable at that time and the Wings may even choose to trade Drew Miller or Patrick Eaves. Brett Lebda has also been mentioned in trade talk in recent years, or the Wings could choose to move a player like Kirk Maltby, whose contract expires at the end of the season.

In other injury news, Andreas Lilja has been headache-free for nearly two weeks now. Lilja has been sidelined for nearly a year after sustaining a concussion in a fight with Nashville Predator defenseman Shea Weber. As a result, Lilja has experienced constant headaches since the bout and has been on the long-term IR for the Wings. Being symptom-free for nearly two weeks is certainly a step in the right direction and Lilja hopes to start negotiating a comeback date in the near future.
