The Stanley Cup is now Edible

This is the most beautiful thing I have ever seen, besides the actual Stanley Cup.

This is the most beautiful thing I have ever seen, besides the actual Stanley Cup.

Last week, EB and I were working out at the local gym. We begin our sessions with a 25 minute warm-up on the bike. There’s several TV’s showing many things such as reality TV, Detroit Tigers baseball, and Food Network. Doesn’t that sound a little odd, having a network that’s food 24/7 showing at a gym?

Anyhow, I was in the middle of getting my Lance Armstrong on when my attention got distracted. I saw a tall, shiny silver object. This tall, shiny silver object turned out to the real Stanley Cup. The NHL brought it to Charm City Cakes in Baltimore, where the television show Ace of Cakes is featured.

This episode of Ace of Cakes, a couple who are huge Washington Capitals fans, were able to get their wedding cake created in a replica of the Cup. If you can’t tell by the photo above, this cake was amazing to watch. To make it look even more awesome, the couple even had the names of the bridesmaids and groomsmen “engaved” on the cup.

Other features included the names of the bride and groom at the top of the bowl, as well as a figurine of the couple “peeking” over the top. If you want to watch the entire episode of how the Stanley Cup cake came to life, feel free to tune to Food Network this Sunday, August 16, at 5:30 p.m. ET/PT.

Whoever is lucky enough to marry me somewhere down the line must be open to this sort of idea. I mean, what guy wouldn’t want a Stanley Cup wedding cake? Okay if she’s not down for that, at least provide our reception guests with ThunderStix instead of the annoying clanging of the glass with silverware.

Unfortunately for you Capitals fans, the Stanley Cup cake is as close as your team will get to the Stanley Cup anytime soon.

Mother Russia Claims Another

TSN is reporting that forward Nikolai Zherdev has signed with a team in the Russian KHL league.

Could Zherdev's career be tied into the folkloric belief of the unlucky #13?

Could Zherdev's career be tied into the folkloric belief of the unlucky #13?

The 24 year old started with the Columbus Blue Jackets, traded to the New York Rangers, and eventually ended up on the short end of the stick as the New York Rangers exercised their walk-away option from an arbitration award. The forward was awarded a 1 year $3.9m contract.

Zherdev posted 23 goals and 35 assists for 58 points in 82 games last year with the Rangers.

With the salary cap what is is today, and most teams already made their off season acquisitions, it was only a matter of time before the young forward was to sign in another league.

Zherdev has had previous stints in the Russian league to later play with an NHL team in the same season. One can only hope that he returns sometime within this upcoming season as his talent for the game could help any team become better.

Chicago Blackhawks star Patrick Kane was charged along with his cousin for allegedly attacking a cab driver because he did not have the .20 change after the pair paid their fare.

20-year-old Kane and his cousin James Kane , 21, were returning from the nightclub district in downtown Buffalo, NY around 4 a.m. Sunday morning. They were taken into police custody an hour later after allegedly hitting the cab driver and taking the $15 fare the men gave the cab driver. The total of the cab ride was $13.80. The cab driver only gave them a dollar in change when one Kane began punching the driver while the other choked him.

According to the police report filed, “The one Kane is choking me the other one is punching me; ‘Don’t you know who I am? Don’t you know who I am. You’re messing with the wrong people.’ I says I didn’t have the extra 20 cents to give them change.”

The cab driver was struck in the face and head. He also suffered broken glasses and cuts to his face according to police reports.

James and Patrick were charged with felony robbery and misdemeanor counts of theft of services and criminal mischief. The Blackhawks right winger had an attorney plead not guilty in City Court on his behalf Sunday afternoon according to a report by WIVB-TV.

The Blackhawks are taking the conservative route with the 2007 top overall pick in the NHL Draft with this situation, waiting until they assess the information and facts regarding the incident before making comment or any further action.

In New York state, second-degree robbery is a Class C felony. The criminal mischief and theft-of-services charges are both Class A misdemeanors.

Williams back in Hockeytown

jwil_79277The Detroit Red Wings announced today that they have signed right-wing Jason Williams to a one-year, $1.5 million contract.

Williams is familiar with the Red Wing, having spent seven years in the organization playing for their minor league affiliates or the Red Wings themselves before being dealt to the Chicago Blackhawks at the trade deadline in 2007. Williams signed with the Atlanta Thrashers in the summer of 2008 as an unrestricted free agent where he played 41 games before being dealt to the Columbus Blue Jackets. Between the two teams, Williams had 19 goals and 47 points.

“He’s somebody we’ve had before,” said Detroit vice president and general manager Ken Holland. “We know the player. We know the person. We lost 90 goals (to free agency) and we’re looking to replace some of that. We’re hoping Jason can get 15-20 goals. Maybe he can get more.”

The Red Wings expect Williams to help fill the void left by the departure of free agent Mikael Samuelsson, a right-handed shot who could play the point on the power play.

Williams won a Stanley Cup with Detroit in 2001-2002 where he played in 9 playoff games.

New York walks from Zherdev award

The New York Rangers have reportedly walked away from the contract awarded to Nikolai Zherdev by a salary arbitrator on Tuesday, making nikolai_zherdev1the right-wing a free agent.

The 24-year-old Zherdev was reportedly seeking a contract worth $4.75 million while the Rangers were offering closer to $3 million. Zherdev was awarded a one-year contract worth $3.9 million by the arbitrator.

”With the additions we’ve been able to make this summer, we feel we’ve been able to add scoring and offense from the wing position,” Rangers President and General Manager Glen Sather stated. ”Following the arbitration process and subsequent award given, we feel it is in our best interest to walk away and continue to explore all available options to improve our roster.”

Originally drafted by the Columbus Blue Jackets, Zherdev experienced his best season in terms of production when he scored 26 goals and registered 61 points with the Blue Jackets during the 2007-08 season. Zherdev signed as a free agent with New York last season where he accumulated 58 points in 82 games, including 23 goals.

Wings sign Eaves to one-year deal

57212940DB007_Game_3_OttawaThe Detroit Red Wings finally made a dip into this summer’s free agent pool with the signing of right-wing Patrick Eaves to a one-year deal. Terms of the contract were not disclosed.

Eaves scored six goals and tallied eight assists last season with the Carolina Hurricane. Earlier this summer, the 25-year-old was traded to the Boston Bruins for defenseman Aaron Ward. The Bruins then bought out the contract, making Eaves a free agent.

Entering his fifth NHL season, the former first-round draft pick is an excellent skater and strong fore-checker.  In his rookie year with Ottawa, Eaves scored 20 goals in only 58 games. However, his production fell off after a 32-point 2006-07 season with Ottawa. In 85 games with the Carolina Hurricane over the span of two seasons, Eaves only managed seven goals and 19 points. Many critics feel that Eaves still has strong offensive potential that he is yet to display.

After losing key free agent forwards Marion Hossa, Mikael Samuelsson and Jiri Hudler, the Detroit Red Wings were looking for skilled players to fill those voids. With only an estimated $2.5 million available under the salary cap, The Red Wings were limited in their ability to bring in highly skilled free agents. Rumors over the last few weeks have suggested that former Red Wing Jason Williams was on his way back to the club. In fact, Detroit GM Ken Holland confirmed that an offer had been made to Williams, who didn’t seem very enthusiastic to come back to the Wings and opted to field offers from other clubs before committing to the Red Wings. This prompted Holland to quickly move on to other available talent.

With the buyout from Boston, it is speculated that Eaves, who made $1.4 million last season, was willing to take a pay-cut to play with the Wings. Chances are that Eaves signed for $1 million or less. This would potentially leave the Red Wings with another $1-1.5 million to possibly sign another free agent.

**UPDATE** According to Bruce Macleod of The Macomb Daily and Red Wings Corner blog, Eaves’ contract is worth $500,000. This is a steal for the Red Wings to grab a talented young player who is a skilled fore-checker and a responsible player who potentially has a tremendous offensive upside.

“He was looking for an opportunity,” said Detroit vice president and general manager Ken Holland. “He’s a player that fits our style. He’s got skill. We’ve got a comfortable environment in our locker room that has been a good fit for other players looking for an opportunity.”

With the signing of Eaves, the Detroit Red Wings have $1.18 million left under the cap. GM Ken Holland has stated that the team is looking for another forward to sign. Some sources have suggested that the Wings may try to bring in gritty forward Mike Grier, while others have suggested that Detroit is taking a look at former Red Wing Todd Bertuzzi, who made $1.95 million last season with Calgary while tallying 44 points in 66 games. Bertuzzi played 8 games with the Wings in 2006-07 after being traded from the Florida Panthers.

Round Trip

Radim Vrbata returns to the Coyotes lineup next season.

Radim Vrbata returns to the Coyotes lineup next season.

With all the hoopla surrounding the Phoenix Coyotes, it is easy to have missed the return of right wing Radim Vrbata. Vrbata played with the Coyotes in the ’07–’08 season, posting 56 points in 76 games. Afterwards he signed with the Tampa Bay Lightning only to play 18 games, and returns to the Coyotes lineup next season.

It is uncertain what line and with whom he will be playing with, yet with the loss of Nigel Dawes to the Calgary Flames, expect him to be playing on the second line. From a fantasy perspective Vrbata does contribute points wise, and if given the opportunity to play on the power play, he would be a real good addition for depth.

One last thing to note, Peter Mueller entered the league in the ’07–’08 season with a very respectable 54 points, yet dipped last season. If the two play together consitently, watch closely as the two could be a dangerous tandem.

Time for sniper to be a team player

Senators Maple Leafs Hockey

The Dany Heatley saga has been anything but professional since the onset of the storyline right before the NHL draft in June. Claiming that he was unhappy with the direction of his role with the Ottawa Senators under new head coach Cory Clouston, Heatley reached out to Ottawa management and asked for the trade after only one year of his new 6-year contract worth $45 million. From the very beginning, however, this whole ordeal has been a mockery of professionalism on the part of the Heatley camp.

The first mistake made was Heatley’s corner publicly announcing that they had filed a request for a trade, which hamstrung Ottawa from the get-go. Instead of being able to queitly shop the scoring left winger and get a marginal return, Senators GM Brian Murray was put in a tough spot with the public announcement. Now that teams know Heatley is disgruntled and wants out of Ottawa, since other GM’s know that Ottawa is looking to deal, they aren’t willing to give the return that should be given on a sniper like Heatley. Instead, it becomes an issue of how little you can give away and still get Heatley on your roster in return.

The other issue became persuading Heatley to lift his no-trade clause, which Heatley said he would only do for certain clubs and gave management a list of preferred destinations, many of which could not offer a real return on Heatley in a trade, nor could they absorb his tremendous salary.

The only team to really step up with a legitimate offer was Edmonton, whose offer seemed remotely fair given the circumstances. The Oilers offered up forwards Dustin Penner and Andrew Cogliano along with defenseman Ladislav Smid. Although Penner has been a huge underachiever since signing an offer sheet with Edmonton in 2007, the big forward may have benefit in Ottawa from playing with other high-caliber players to take some of the pressure off of his own shoulders. However, Heatley decided against this trade and refused to waive his no trade clause. That didn’t stop Edmonton from courting the prized winger, until recently when Oilers GM Steve Tambellini announced that the Oilers were no longer interested in Heatley’s services.

“We gave ourselves an allotted amount of time internally … to explore every opportunity to see if there was something that would work — it didn’t. It’s time for us to move on. We’re very comfortable with that,” Tambellini said. The Oilers GM worked for over a month trying to persuade Heatley to come to Edmonton.

So, let’s sum up the scenario. Heatley demands trade, but wants to dictate where that trade leads him according to his own personal agenda. But the actions out of his camp from the very beginnings of this saga made it nearly impossible for Ottawa to get the type of return that they should get for a forward able to score 50 goals and is in the prime of his career. And when Ottawa did get a legitimate offer, Heatley refused to waive his no trade clause because the destination didn’t fit with his personal agenda, even though any team who would fit his agenda doesn’t have the cap space or isn’t willing to give up first-or-second tier forwards in return for a prima donna like Heatley. It sounds like Heatley needs to suck it up and be a team player.

My suggestion for Ottawa? Keep Heatley. Don’t trade him. Let him know that he brought his current situation upon himself and that he is going to play in Ottawa this coming season because of it. Who knows, with the addition of Alex Kovalev to the Senator’s roster, Heatley may feel differently come October when some of the pressure may be lifted off of the shoulders of Heatley. But, if Heatley doesn’t want to play? Bench him. I understand that Heatley makes way too much money to bench, but he needs to understand that come trade deadline time, nobody will want to add an underachieving scorer whose heart and worth ethic just aren’t there. At this point, if Heatley wants to be traded somewhere that fits his agenda, he needs to work for it. It’s time to step up to the plate and be a professional for once in this long, drawn out saga. It’s time to sit down, lace up your skates, and play hockey.
