Advertising On Uniforms: Coming Soon to the NHL?

It’s been approximately 30 years since the NHL allowed commercial advertising on the boards. Now, we are so used to seeing ad’s all over the boards, ice, and other places around the rink, that it looks weird whenever we do not see ad’s on the boards (such as your local rink and arena’s that host the NCAA hockey tournament).

There’s already a lot of advertising during an NHL game. Ad’s on the stairs that strategically face the main TV camera, superimposing a logo over the crowd when entering or returning from a commercial break, and even behind the benches.

Professional leagues in Europe already have advertising all over the uniforms (such as the photo seen here) but how would be be taken here in America?

Would NHL jersey's of the future look like this with the amount of advertising?

Would NHL jersey's of the future look like this with the amount of advertising?

In a age where the money towards sponsorship has decreased  because of the recession, teams will have to be more creative when it comes to increasing revenue if the fans cannot afford full-season ticket plans and suites.

The other professional sports in the United States have slowly dived into this new realm. The NFL has allowed teams last year to sell advertising on it’s practice uniforms. Only a handfull of teams have done so, with one example being Atlantic Health forking over $2 Million to the New York Jet’s for their logo to be placed on the practice jerseys and for the naming rights of the Jet’s practice facility.

In the NBA, the league just recently allowed teams to sell advertising on their practice uniforms. Deputy commissioner Adam Silver told USA Today that they are exploring the option of advertising on game jerseys.

As for Major League Baseball, they are not exploring it. They did allow it during the World Baseball Classic.

In hockey, it would take some getting used to seeing several companies logo on a jersey. I think some of the pure hockey fans would not be down with the idea of seeing Little Caesars plastered all over the uniformof the Detroit Red Wings. Or ATT on a Dallas Stars jersey.

In my opinion, I’m about maximizing revenue’s in the most efficient way possible. There’s already subtle advertising on the uniform’s already with the logo of the equipment manufacturers. So why not throw a sponsor or 2 on the uniforms. It just might save a team such as a Coyotes or Islanders. However, I am not down with plastering it in every square inch possible like NASCAR. I would be content with certain places and size restrictions. Places such as the helmet, socks, pants, jersey sleeves, and the bottom of the jersey in the front and back. Keep the area from the logo and above clean as well as above the number on the back clean.

What I dont want to see is what they have done in the WNBA and soccer, where the logo of the sponsor is bigger than the team’s logo itself. I don’t want to see the National City logo across the chest and a small Columbus Blue Jackets logo in the top corner.

Let The Countdown Begin!

The 2009-10 NHL Season Begins in 64 Days.

The first 2 of 1,230 regular season games will begin at 7:00 PM Eastern when Alexander Ovechkin visits Boston and the Canadian Original Six rivalry begins when Montreal visits Toronto.

In other news, one of my longtime favorite players returns to a former team. Defenseman Aaron Ward was traded over the weekend from Boston to Carolina, where he won a Stanley Cup in 2006 with the Hurricanes.  One of the more underrated players in the NHL, Ward has three Stanley Cups in his career. He was also a member of the back-to-back championship teams in the late 90’s with the Red Wings.

Ward should be seeing time as a second or third line defensive pairing, especially how Carolina bought out the contract of Frantisek Kaberle because he would of made 2.2 Million this upcoming season.

This was an upgrade for the ‘Canes, with their increase in size to take on the skilled forwards of the Eastern Conference such as Ovechkin, Crosby and Malkin. He would be a great compliment with Joni Pitkanen, just like how he played with Zdeno Chara in Boston.

A #66 Satan jersey would be the #1 selling NHL jersey of all-time. On a final note, am I the only one who wishes that free-agent Miroslav Satan change his number to 66 when ever he signs with a new team?

Prospal Bought Out by Bolts

200px-Vaclav_Prospal_LightningIt looks as if Vaclav Prospal has just become one of the elite members of this summer’s free agency pool…

The Tampa Bay Tribune reported earlier today that Prospal was infromed that his contract will be bought out by the Tampa Bay Lightning one year after signing a four-year, $14 million contract with the Bolts.

“After fully evaluating our roster and our position in the salary cap world, we arrived at the decision to buy out Vaclav Prospal from his contract,” general manager Brian Lawton told the Tribune. “We appreciate Vinny’s service to the Lightning, but in the best interest of the team, we believe a difficult decision needed to be made in this case, and we are going to move ahead without him. We wish Vinny all the best.”

The star left wing resigned with the Tampa Bay Lightning last summer after the team traded him to the Philedelphia Flyers at the 2007-08 trade deadline. Between the two clubs, Prospal netted 33 goals for 71 points, including 14 points in 18 games with the Flyers. That campaign was followed up last season with one of the worst of the 34-year-old veteran’s career by posting 45 points in a full 82 games with Tampa Bay.

Prospal has 24 hours to either accept the buyout or choose to be placed on waivers. If he accepts the buyout, Prospal will become an unrestricted free agent eligible to sign with any club he chooses. Tampa Bay will take a cap hit of $1.167 for the next six seasons to compensate for the buyout.

Reebok Crowns Red Wings 2009 Stanley Cup Champs

Many hockey fans will continue to remember the excitement of the 2009 Stanley Cup Finals for years to come. The Detroit Red Wings battled their way through a tough Stanley Cup Playoffs only to fall one game short of becoming the first back-to-back champions since they had done it 11 years prior. In a pivotal game 7, the Red Wings ran out of gas and eventually conceded to the NHL’s favorite marketing tool, the Pittsburgh Penguins. All hockey fans remember the moment as Sid the Kid raised the Stanley Cup for the first time. How could we forget? It happened less than two months ago.

Back to Back Stanley Cup Champions 2009?

Back to Back Stanley Cup Champions 2009?

Some have forgotten, however, and they are currently designing apparel for Reebok Hockey. While browsing through the fan gear on the Reebok Hockey site, you will eventually come across this stunning t-shirt. The front of the shirt shows a Red Wings logo along with the words “2009 Stanley Cup Champions.” Uh-Oh!

Here is a link to the product itself. The caption on the page reads “Congratulations Detroit Red Wings on back-to-back Stanley Cup victories! Get your historic tee and commemorate another incredible season.” Historic indeed.

Any Red Wings fan still having a hard time with that loss, still not willing to admit their team fell short on home ice, its okay. Reebok has you covered. Wear this shirt and wear it proudly. Show off that winged wheel and continue to live the dream as though Sidney never laid a hand on the Cup. We support you and your quest to keep the dream alive.

Should He Stay or Should He Go?

Newly elected NHL Hall-of-Famer Steve Yzerman has served as Vice President/Alternate Governor in the Detroit Red Wings front office since retiring in 2006. Hockey fans know that The Captain deserves to have a shot at becoming a General Manager of a NHL club in the future. He is even having his first chance of making real decisions over a hockey team as he is currently serving as Executive Director of the 2010 Canadian Olympic team.

What caught my attention was a recent blog posted here that brought to my attention that Yzerman was hoping to be considered for the Chicago Blackhawks GM position, which eventually went to Stan Bowman, son of former Red Wings coach Scotty Bowman.

Who would be the first team to give him a shot as General Manager?

Who would be the first team to give him a shot as General Manager?

Now, depending on how he organizes the Olympic team will determine how soon and who will want him as a General Manager. He already has been groomed in one of the best organizations in sports, but he is miles away from replacing Ken Holland as General Manager. The MLive.com blog also reiterated that Assistant GM Jim Nill’s contract is up in two years, and the Red Wings will be sure to evaluate their front office at that time.

But it got me thinking, if Yzerman wants to run his own team, how would Detroit fans react? Me personally, I’d be happy to see him with any team outside the Central Division and preferibly the Western Confernece. Let him turn around the New York Islanders. Let him run the Phoenix Hamilton Coyotes.

He’s gonna be facing a lot of pressure in the fall when he has to put together the Canadian Olympic team. He win’s a Gold Medal in Vancouver next February, then I think he’s qualified enough to run a NHL club.

The Alex Tanguay Sweepstakes

The rumor going around the net is that the Calgary Flames are pushing to bring back former Flame Alex Tanguay, who will provide sAlex Tanguayecondary scoring and veteran depth for the team and help alleviate the loss of departed-free-agent Mike Cammalleri. Sources say that an announcement about the signing could be made within the next few days.

Alex Tanguay may arguably be the most prolific free agent still available out of this years free agent pool. Tanguay, who won a cup with Colorado in 2001, is rumored to be asking for a figure in the ballpark of $5 million per season.

Tanguay has posted several productive seasons in his stints with the Avalanch and Calgary Flames. Tanguay has posted 50 points or more seven times in his career. In 2005-06, the left wing netted a career-high 29 goals and finished the season with 78 points. The next season, Tanguay added to his point total by tallying 81 points with the Calgary Flames. However, his production dipped the next season with the Flames to 58 points.

In an injury-shortened season with the Montreal Canadiens in 2008-09, Tanguay posted 41 points in 50 games. However, his unwillingness to play in the playoffs made many question his work ethic and the stability of his nagging shoulder injury that sidelined him for 32 games. Critics of Tanguay’s play often call him “soft.”

Several other teams are rumored to be looking at Tanguay. Rumor has it that Tanguay has spoken with the New York Islanders about a contract offer. Other interested teams include the Tampa Bay Lighting, Phoenix Coyotes, Florida Panthers and Nashville Predators.

Mended… Feather?

Marian Hossa

Marian Hossa

Reports are circulating about winger Marian Hossa of the Chicago Blackhawks undergoing shoulder surgery to repair his right rotator cuff. Hossa, who was acquired from Detroit Red Wings in the free agency, is expected to fill Martin Havlat’s void in the Blackhawk lineup. Marian posted 71pts in 74 regular season games as well as 15pts in the post season last year.

With surgery expected to be done July 24 and a 4 month recovery, fans should not fear his absence, as the youthful duo Jonathan Toews and Patrick Kane should be able to maintain the level of play from last year’s season. Concerns still would arise after the fact. Could the surgery affect Hossa’s game? And if it does affect his game, will the Blackhawks make the post season? And how far will they go if they do? Potentially the most concerning, with a 12 year contract, is this the start of another injury plagued Marian?

Time will tell what all plays out. Regardless, the Chicago Blackhawks should be a great team to watch this upcoming season and seasons to come in arguably the most competitive division in the western conference.

A New Meaning for the Word “Dangle”

qxi1255_licLike watching Sid the Kid dangle on your television screen during the NHL season? Well, evidently now you can watch him dangle inside your home, too. Except, in this case, he will be dangling from your Christmas tree.

Hallmark has released a Keepsake ornament in the likeness of number 87 himself, which can be had for a mere $16.50 at any Hallmark location or online. And if that isn’t enough, do a quick Google search for the opportunity to pair Sid on your tree with his mentor/landlord Mario Lemieux as well. The Lemieux Keepsake ornament was originally released in 1998.

Eric Lindros, Gordie Howe, and The Great One himself have also been encapsulated in ornament form in previous editions of the Hallmark Keepsake ornament.

Mission Boss SE, 2010 Catalog

Mission Boss SE

Mission Boss SE

Along with Bauer, the Mission Roller Hockey 2010 Catalog has found its way to the internet. Although the high end Mission Boss SE skates are a bit bold with their gold accents and wheels, they are quite a bit more tame than the white original Boss and Boss Black skates .

While the 2010 skate line from Mission offers many of the same features as the Bauer counterparts, the Bauer line is far more aesthecially pleasing. However, if you are a roller hockey player looking to add some flash and attention to your look on the rink, this line up might be for you.

Mission Commander SE Pants

Mission Commander SE Pants

If flash and style are part of your roller hockey game, be sure to add a pair of the Mission Commander SE pants to your bag as well. You can go for the red or blue plaid pattern, a white or black news print pattern, or add some class to your style and go for the white or black pinstripe pants. If you’re into more of a classic look on the rink, look out for the Soldier SE pants. They are simple, straight to the point, but look good.

The Mission Roller Hockey 2010 Catalog is online, so go scope out the new gear. Along with the new skates and pants, you can see their new line of gloves, goalie equipment, and protective gear.

Bauer Vapor RX:60 Roller Hockey Skate, 2010 Catalog

Bauer RX:60 Roller Hockey Skate

Bauer Vapor RX:60 Roller Hockey Skate

After Bauer acquired Mission, the word traveling around was that Bauer would continue to create its outstanding line of ice hockey equipment, while the Mission brand would still be used for the company’s new roller hockey gear.

Apparently Bauer had a big trick up their sleeves. They have developed an entire new lineup of roller hockey skates, which are all in their 2010 roller hockey catalog that recently surfaced on the internet.

The new Bauer Vapor RX:60, a top end skate, features a full texallium outsole, a hydra max liner that is abrasion resistant and moisture wicking, and a form fit 2 toungue which will help protect against shots and lace bite. The skate also comes with a Vanguard Magnesium Hi-Lo chassis, Labeda Addiction 608 wheels, and Mission Swiss 608 bearings.

As previously stated, Bauer has created a skate to fit in every price point. The entire 2010 Bauer Roller Hockey catalog can downloaded by clicking here. Anyone shopping for a new pair of roller hockey skates might want to wait until September or October to see if they can get their feet in a pair of these.
